Hydrological changes in the Mediterranean Sea over the last 30,000 years ArchiMer

Sea surface temperatures were reconstructed over the last 30,000 years from alkenone paleothermometry (SST-(alk)) and planktonic foraminifera assemblages using the Modern Analog Technique (MAT) (SST-(foram)) along two cores of the Mediterranean Sea: MD84-632 (Levantine basin) and MD04-2797 (Siculo-Tunisian Strait). Oxygen isotope of planktonic foraminifera G. bulloides for core MD04-2797 and G. ruber for core MD84-632 were also determined. SST-alk in the Levantine basin indicate colder values at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) (similar to 14 degrees C) than earlier established from MAT, and a cooling amplitude of 6 degrees-7 degrees C, comparable to the central Mediterranean Sea. Long-term and millennial-scale climate variability in northwestern France during the last 8850 years ArchiMer

Vegetation and quantitative climate reconstructions from a northwestern France shelf core (VK0358Bis) show orbital and suborbital climate variability for the last 8850 years in this region. A long-term cooling trend in summer temperatures, marked by gradual temperate and humid forest decline, parallels cooling in Greenland and the decrease of mid-latitude summer insolation reduction until at least 2000 cal. yr BP. At the long-term scale, the lowering in seasonal contrast revealed by vegetation changes follows the increase of precession. On the limits of Antarctic and marine climate records synchronization: Lag estimates during marine isotopic stages 5d and 5c ArchiMer

North Atlantic sediment records (MD95-2042), Greenland (Greenland Ice Core Project (GRIP)) and Antarctica (Byrd and Vostok) ice core climate records have been synchronized over marine isotopic stage 3 (MIS 3) (64 to 24 kyr B. P.) (Shackleton et al., 2000). The resulting common timescale suggested that MD95-2042 delta(18)O(benthic) fluctuations were synchronous with temperature changes in Antarctica (delta D-ice or delta(18)O(ice) records). In order to assess the persistency of this result we have used here the recent Greenland NorthGRIP ice core covering the last glacial inception. We transfer the Antarctic Vostok GT4 timescale to NorthGRIP delta(18)O(ice) and MD95-2042 delta(18)O(planktonic) records and precisely quantify all the relative timing...
