O texto analisa o surgimento e evolução do mercado de álcool carburante no Brasil, destacando seu elo com a trajetória do mercado interno e exportações de açúcar. Mostra que durante muito tempo tais mercados foram marcados pela ação planejadora por parte do órgão estatal (o IAA/Instituto do Açúcar e do Álcool) criado em 1933, e que o enfraquecimento de tal incumbência quando do advento do Proálcool em 1975 foi seguido do esvaziamento de outras atribuições do órgão entre 1985 e 1990, quando foi extinto. ABSTRACT: This paper presents the strategic importance of potassium (K) in Brazil, focusing four aspects: the function in the plant; the K content of Brazilian soil; the different K forms; and its demand in the Brazilian agricultural system. The K is not a structural element of plants, but it participates in many biochemical plant processes, like carbohydrates and proteins synthesis, showing its economical importance in terms of production. A Sectoral Model for Analyzing Alternative Technologies in Pig Farming

This paper develops a demand-augmented positive mathematical programming model to analyze the relationship between environmental pollution from animal manure, manure policies and different pork production systems in the Netherlands. The model features substitution of conventional and alternative pork from the demand side and endogenous manure prices. It is found that policies that put restrictions on environmental pollution from manure decreases the conventional pork production systems, but increases organic pork production systems. The latter is considered an improved system from both an animal welfare and environmental point of view.

This study identifies the reasons for low producer prices of rice that have not covered its production costs for many years in Madagascar. The following points will be discussed: the farmers’ marketing conditions and the rural rice market structure, including the functions of each intervening trader preceding rice distribution in urban centers. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento do mercado de madeira e celulose no Brasil e na Região Norte. O modelo de análise proposto inclui as variáveis relevantes que determinam a oferta e a demanda de madeira e celulose, assim como as expectativas sobre a formação de preços. Os resultados mostram que tanto a oferta quanto a demanda de celulose são inelásticas a preço. Isto significa que tanto o produtor quanto o consumidor fazem ajuste nas quantidades ofertada e demandada em proporção inferior às variações de preço. Outro fato relevante é que a demanda de celulose na Região Norte é perfeitamente inelástica à renda, indicando que o consumo não reage às mudanças na renda do consumidor. Resumo: O objetivo desse estudo foi caracterizar o perfil dos consumidores de ovinos da região do Cariri Cearense, considerando variáveis ligadas à preferência dos consumidores e suas relações com os aspectos socioeconômicos. Para tanto, foram aplicados 450 questionários semi-estruturados aos consumidores de carne ovina, nos municípios de Barbalha, Crato, Campos Sales, Farias Brito e Juazeiro do Norte. Os consumidores consideram como quesitos importantes na escolha do local de compra a qualidade dos produtos e a aparência do local. A média de consumo da carne ovina é uma vez por semana.
