A new vision of the origin and the oocyte development in the Ostariophysi applied to Gymnotus sylvius (Teleostei: Gymnotiformes) Neotropical Ichthyology

Based on new knowledge coming from marine perciform species, the origin of oocytes and their development in the Ostariophysi, Gymnotus sylvius is described. In both Gymnotus sylvius and marine perciform fish, oogonia are found in the germinal epithelium that forms the surface of the ovarian lamellae. At the commencement of folliculogenesis, proliferation of oogonia and their entrance into meiosis gives rise to germ cell nests that extend into the stroma from the germinal epithelium. Both cell nests and the germinal epithelium are supported by the same basement membrane that separates them from the stroma. Characterization and development of marolo (Annona crassiflora, Mart.) Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.

The objectives of this study was the physical, chemical, and physiological characterization of marolo (Annona crassiflora, Mart.) during its development. The fruits were harvested 12 Km off Itumirim, Southern Minas Gerais, Brazil, at 20-d intervals from anthesis to fruit maturity. The first fruits were harvested within 60 days. The total development of the fruit took 140 days starting from anthesis. At 140 days after anthesis, the fruit reached its maximum size, with mass of 1.380g, transverse diameter of 13.0 cm, and longitudinal diameter of 11.5 cm. Chlorophyll fluorescence of the testa of Brassica oleracea seeds as an indicator of seed maturity and seed quality Scientia Agricola

Chlorophyll fluorescence of the testa of seeds is proposed as a non-invasive method for the determination of maturity and quality of seeds. In this study cabbage seeds (Brassica oleracea) were sorted individually based on the chlorophyll fluorescence signals into four subsamples labeled with respect to their chlorophyll fluorescence signal (low, medium, high and very high). The results show that the magnitude of the chlorophyll fluorescence signal was inversely related to the quality of the seeds, expressed as germination %, normal seedling %, germination rate (T50) and uniformity of germination (T75-T25). The seed lot could be improved from 90 to 97% normal seedlings by sorting out 13% of the seeds with very high chlorophyll fluorescence signals....

ABSTRACT Macaw palm (Acrocomia aculeata) is a promising crop for biofuel production due to the high concentration of its fruit oil, but the harvest date is an issue to be better understood so it could be cultivated on an industrial scale. The aim of this study was to use the colorimetric properties of the macaw palm fruits to develop a neural network classifier to determine the ideal moment for harvesting, based on the oil content of the fruit mesocarp. During nine weeks of maturation were sampled 900 fruits of macaw palm fruits and the colorimetric properties of the RGB, HSI and CIELab color models were used to classify the fruits into immature and mature fruits. Two-year-old oysters have a physiology which is reproduction-oriented, their maturation occurring synchronously among oysters from the same batch. The importance of the spring accumulation of glycogenated stocks varies through the years and correlates with the growth stage. Glucidic components are quickly used during the month preceding egg-laying and are transformed into lipid stocks for the oocytes. One-year-old oysters develop at different rates, some of them not showing any sign of maturation and the percentage of laying individuals varies through the years. ABSTRACT This contribution records the reproductive periods of ten dominant freshwater fish species from the Patos Lagoon and Guaíba Lake (Astyanax fasciatus, Cyphocharax voga, Hoplias malabaricus, Oligosarcus jenynsii, Oligosarcus robustus, Hoplosternum littorale, Loricariichthys anus, Parapimelodus nigribarbis, Trachelyopterus lucenai, Pachyurus bonariensis). Design of waste stabilization ponds for dairy processing plants in Uganda CIGR Journal

Waste stabilization ponds (WSP) were designed to treat 287.5 m3 day-1 of wastewater generated from processing of 100 m3 of milk per day.  The design involved use of existing models including those developed by Mara to size the anaerobic, facultative and maturation ponds.  The design temperature was 250C.  The anaerobic pond was designed based on volumetric organic loading rate while facultative pond was designed based on surface loading rate.  On the other hand, the maturation pond was designed based on the number of coliform bacteria removed per 100 mL of wastewater.  The anaerobic pond was designed to remove 70% BOD, facultative pond-75% and maturation pond-25% BOD.  In addition, the maturation pond was designed to have a coliform bacteria removal...

The expression of such life history traits is determined by genetic make-up and modulated by environmental factors mainly through phenotypic plasticity. Aspects of reproduction of Rineloricaria latirostris Boulenger, 1899 of Passa Cinco river (Ipeúna, São Paulo) were investigated during 18 months. The spawing period was determined by the analysis of the maturation curve, based of the monthly variation of the gonadosomatic index and condition factor. The size and age on the maturation and fecundity were also determined. The fecundity was realted to some parameters such as total length and total weight.

The study of maturation and spawning of the oyster is part of a research program to investigate the summer mortalities of the oysters, Crassostrea gigas in Marennes-Oléron Bay. Four maturity stages were simultaneously obtained by diet and thermal conditioning (immature, low maturation, mature and post-spawning stages). Measurements of clearance, filtration, absorption and respiration rates allowed a calculation of the scope for growth and hence an estimation of the oyster's energetic budget at various maturity stages. The study of sexual maturation and spawning in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is part of a vast research programme that endeavours to understand the causes of mortality that occur sporadically during the spring and summer seasons in the Marennes-Oléron Bay. Thermal and diet conditioning were used to obtain oysters at each stage of maturity simultaneously. Using the measured rates of clearance, consumption, absorption and respiration provided estimates of growth potential and gave the energetic budget of oysters at different stages of sexual maturity. Effect of Californian Red Worm (Eisenia foetida) on the Nutrient Dynamics of a Mixture of Semicomposted Materials Chilean J. Agric. Res.

The efficiency of composting processes with and without the addition of Californian red worms (Eisenia foetida) was evaluated, using manure of dairy cows to generate organic fertilizer. Several parameters were assessed as physio-chemical indicators of maturity, such as temperature, pH, C/N ratio, phytotoxicity and macro and micronutrients at 25 and 54 ws (mature and stored products, respectively). A linear model was used in the statistical analysis, with four replicates that included as fixed effects, the composting systems and time. Effect of harvesting time on seed physiological quality, chemical composition and storability of soybeans Scientia Agricola

Soybeans IAC-8 were harvested in the growth stages R7 and R8 commercial harvesting time and at two other subsequent times to compare their physiological and technological characteristics. Seeds were stored at two moisture levels, 12% and 15%, for 6 months. Germination and vigor (acelerated aging, electrical conductivity), oil and free fatty acids, peroxide and iodine values were evaluated periodically. As expected, the time of harvesting and seed moisture content affected seed performance, while oil content did not correlate to physiological quality as did acidity, peroxide value and iodine number.

Effect of sampling location, release technique and time after activation on the movement characteristics of scallop (Pecten maximus) sperm ArchiMer

Sperm characteristics of scallops have not been well described in the scientific literature. The effects of sperm release technique (thermal shock versus serotonin injection), of sperm collection technique (testis sampling versus serotonin injection), of sperm sampling location along the genital tract, of in vitro sperm maturation, and of time post activation on scallop sperm characteristics were assessed in the present work. Effect of seed maturation stages on physical properties and antioxidant activity in flaxseed ( Linum usitatissimum L.) Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.

Abstract The changes in flaxseed constituents at different stages of maturity are reported. The physical properties and antioxidant activity of flaxseed oil during flaxseed development have been evaluated. Continuous decrease in total polyphenol content during flaxseed development. All the results showed no significant differences between HPLC-MS and TLC for quantitative determination of phospholipids classes. The fatty acid compositions of individual phospholipids were also reported. The antioxidant activity of oilseed was assessed by means of 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. The test demonstrated that the antioxidant activity of the flaxseed oil was found to be harvesting time-dependant.
