The first comprehensive data on species composition, abundance, biomass and survival (living/dead ratio) of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay (Black Sea) are presented. Marked differences were observed between the years 1998 and 1999, and these could be attributed to the hydrology and the eutrophication status of the different parts of the Bay. Shannon index and selected community parameters (number of species, biomass, numbers of individuals) indicated that South Bay was the worst affected part of the Bay with the greatest eutrophication impact on the meroplankton. The early larval stages of the barnacle Balanus improvisus and of the polychaete Polydora sp. were the most sensitive to presumed environmental stresses. It is suggested that the mortality of... |

Recent advances in technology have enabled an unprecedented development of underwater research, extending from near shore to the deepest regions of the globe. However, monitoring of biodiversity is not fully implemented in political agendas and biological observations in the deep ocean have been even more limited in space and time. The Foresight Workshop on Advances in Ocean Biological Observations: a sustained system for deep-ocean meroplankton was convened to to foster advances in the knowledge on deep-ocean invertebrate larval distributions and improve our understanding of fundamental deep-ocean ecological processes such as connectivity and resilience of benthic communities to natural and human-induced disturbance. This Meroplankton Observations... |

The impact of a power plant cooling system in the Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina) on the survival of target zooplanktonic organisms (copepods and crustacean larvae) and on overall mesozooplankton abundance was evaluated over time. Mortality rates were calculated for juveniles and adults of four key species in the estuary: Acartia tonsa Dana, 1849 and Eurytemora americana Williams, 1906 (native and invading copepods), and larvae of the crab Chasmagnathus granulata Dana, 1851 and the invading cirriped Balanus glandula Darwin, 1854. Mean total mortality values were up to four times higher at the water discharge site than at intake, though for all four species, significant differences were only registered in post-capture mortality. The findings show no... |

The relationship between meroplankton distribution and spatio-temporal variability of coastal mesoscale hydrological structure was investigated in the northern Bay of Biscay, North-East Atlantic. For the three coastal polychaetes studied, i.e. Pectinaria koreni, Owenia fusiformis and Sabellaria alveolata, the highest larval abundances were sampled in low-salinity, low-density and high-temperature river plume waters. For two species (P. koreni and O. fusiformis), maximal abundances were observed in the surface and thermocline layers due to ontogenic migrations. Variance partitioning based on multiple regression and redundancy analyses was used to assess the relative roles played by the hydrological environment alone, the geographical space alone and their... |

Feeding of the S. sprattus was studied comparatively with the dynamics of the zooplanktonic trophic base. In April, the sprat consumed 1,459 t of zooplankton, especially Acartia clausi (84 per cent). Zooplanktonic productivity was 30 per cent due to Acartia clausi, and the sprat consumed 56 per cent of this copepod production. In April, the wt growth of the sprat was 115 t. In May, the sprat consumed 6.201 t of zooplankton, that resulted in a fish production of 492 t. A clausi contributed 36.41 per cent to the zooplankton production and the sprat fed on copepods at a level of 93 per cent. In June, only 1,094 t of zooplankton resulted in a fish production of 87 t. Zooplanktonic production was 60 per cent due to A. clausi, and only 12 per cent of this was... |

The present paper aims to describe the temporal and spatial distribution of the composition and abundance of Decapoda larvae in the shallow waters around Arvoredo Marine Biological Reserve. Stomatopod occurrence is also discussed. Plankton samples were collected at five sites around the Arvoredo Island every two months for one year from May, 2002 to April, 2003. Thirty-nine morphotypes, 11 genus and 4 species (Artemesia longinaris Bate, 1888, Hexapanopeus schmitii Rathbun, 1930, Menippe nodifrons Stimpson, 1859 and Pleoticus muelleri Bate, 1888) were identified, among them only two morphotypes of Stomatopoda larvae, and the remainder Decapoda larvae. Brachyuran zoeae were the most abundant group and they were well represented by Portunidae and Xanthidae... |
