Biological productivity enhancement over a continental shelf break (Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic) evidenced by mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase activity 5
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Koueta, Noussithe.
During spring of 2005, satellite imagery revealed high sea surface chlorophyll a concentrations over the edge of a wide continental shelf in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic). As a descriptor of biological productivity, mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase specific activity was measured in situ during the bloom. Notably high values were detected in the bloom area relative to other parts of the study area.

Determining how the pelagic ecosystem over the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic) functions: An approach using mesozooplankton enzyme activities as descriptors 5
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Delmas, Daniel; Koueta, Noussithe.
A fisheries research cruise conducted in 2000 offered a first opportunity to take simultaneous measurements of the activities of three enzymes in mesozooplankton samples collected at a regional scale over the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay in the NE Atlantic, with the aim of characterizing main aspects of the functioning of the biotic environment of small pelagic fish populations. The activity of the digestive endopeptidase trypsin was selected to characterize the assimilation rate of proteins, whereas pyruvate kinase (PK) was chosen as an indicator of carbohydrate assimilation and aspartate transcarbamylase (ATC) provided an overall assessment of mesozooplankton productivity. The Bay of Biscay region is subject to various strong physical driving...

Do river discharge rates drive the overall functioning of the pelagic ecosystem over the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic)? A comparison of two contrasting years with special reference to anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) nutritional state 5
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Delmas, Daniel; Koueta, Noussithe.
In the 2000 and 2001 springtime periods, mesozooplankton samples were systematically taken during research cruises devoted to the study of the distribution and abundance of small pelagic fishes in the French part of the Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic, continental shelf. Simultaneous activities of three enzymes were measured in these mesozooplankton samples, to characterize the main features of ecosystem function at a regional scale. The aim was to assess assimilation rates of carbohydrates, through pyruvate kinase activity, and protein, through trypsin activity, by the mesozooplankton community and the resulting overall productivity, through aspartate transcarbamylase activity. The highest influence on the pelagic environment was the strong difference in the...

Dynamique spatiale et interannuelle des communautés mésozooplanctoniques en Manche Orientale en lien avec l’introduction récente d’une espèce non-indigène : Mnemiopsis leidyi 5
Gravier, Nathan.
In the seas of southern Europe, Mnemiopsis leidyi is responsible for invasive events with worrying ecological consequences. Since 2005, this native of the east coast of the Americas is regularly observed in the English Channel in the Bay of Seine. In order to find out whether changes have taken place in the distribution of M. leidyi in the English Channel since the first reports made before 2014 and to identify the environmental conditions favourable to his presence, hydrological data and Channel Ground Fish Survey from 2014 to 2015 were analyzed. This confirmed that M. leidyi is well established in the Bay of Seine (naturalized species) but does not extend outside this area and therefore cannot be considered an invasive species for that region. The...

Ecologie du copépode calanoïde Paracartia grani. Implication dans le cycle de vie du parasite Marteilia refringens dans la lagune de Thau 5
Boyer, Séverine.
In this study, the life cycle of Paracartia grani, a calalloid copepod belonging to the Acartiidae family was determined in Thau lagoon. Indeed, the copepod involvement in the life cycle of the parasite Marteilia refringens affecting the bivalve productions is suspected. Mesozooplanktonic community .was monitored twice a month. over two years at a fixed station in the lagoon. Sampling has identified P. grani as the acartiid dominant species in summer. From April to January, the copepod is found in the water column while from February to early April it remains in the sediment as diapausing eggs. The analysis of the population structure (size spectmm, contribution of developmental stages and sex ratio) has revealed that there are in between 6 and 9...

High frequency mesozooplankton monitoring: Can imaging systems and automated sample analysis help us describe and interpret changes in zooplankton community composition and size structure — An example from a coastal site 5
Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Aldamman, Lama; Gasparini, Stephane; Nival, Paul; Aubert, Anais; Jamet, Jean Louis; Stemmann, Lars.
The present work aims to show that high throughput imaging systems can be useful to estimate mesozooplankton community size and taxonomic descriptors that can be the base for consistent large scale monitoring of plankton communities. Such monitoring is required by the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in order to ensure the Good Environmental Status (GES) of European coastal and offshore marine ecosystems. Time and cost-effective, automatic, techniques are of high interest in this context. An imaging-based protocol has been applied to a high frequency time series (every second day between April 2003 to April 2004 on average) of zooplankton obtained in a coastal site of the NW Mediterranean Sea, Villefranche Bay. One hundred eighty four...

Interannual fluctuations in spring pelagic ecosystem productivity in the Bay of Biscay (northeast Atlantic) measured by mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase activity and relationships with anchovy population dynamics 5
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Koueta, Noussithe; Masse, Jacques.
The French part of the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (northeast Atlantic) is the habitat of an anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) population of scientific interest because of its economic importance and the trend towards greater interannual fluctuations in its abundance, particularly as a consequence of variations in recruitment. Each year a 1-month survey of this population and its pelagic environment is undertaken. Among the descriptors of ecosystem function characterized, mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase (ATC) activity is measured with the goal of defining overall productivity of the mesozooplankton communities. Diverse physical forcing factors are responsible for the enhancement of productivity in the Bay of Biscay, and their...

Silva,Andréa Pinto; Neumann-Leitão,Sigrid; Schwamborn,Ralf; Gusmão,Lúcia Maria de Oliveira; Silva,Tâmara de Almeida e.
Mesozooplankton abundance and distribution at Suape Bay, Pernambuco, was studied to assess the impacts caused by the construction of an internal port to increase the capacity of the Suape Port Complex. Zooplankton sampling was done at 3 stations during the dry (November-December/1997) and rainy (April-May/1998) seasons. A plankton net with 300 µm mesh size was used. Wet weight plankton biomass ranged from 44 mg.m-3 to 3,638 mg.m-3. Forty-five macrozooplankton taxa were registered. The most abundant was Copepoda. Among copepods, Acartia lilljeborgi, Parvocalanus crassirostris, Oithona hebes, Corycaeus (C.) speciosus and Temora turbinata were most frequent. Minimum abundance was 9 ind.m-3 and maximum was 2,532 ind.m-3. Average species diversity was 2.55...

Nutritional condition of anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus larvae in connection with mesozooplankton feeding catabolism in the southern Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic 5
Bergeron, Jean-pierre.
The study examines the spatial variations over the French continental shelf of the southern Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic) in the nutritional condition of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) larvae which was estimated through their DNA/C index. The same cruise yielded quantitative estimates of two metabolic descriptors of the functioning of mesozooplanktonic communities, the enzymes pyruvate kinase (PK) and trypsin, for the first time evaluated simultaneously. The aim was to appraise quality and quantity of matter assimilated by the mesozooplankton and to specify whether the main components of prey ingested by copepods are principally carbohydrates, through PK activity, or protein, under the action of the digestive endopeptidase trypsin. The larval...

Population dynamics and predatory impact of the alien jellyfish Aurelia solida (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) in the Bizerte Lagoon (southwestern Mediterranean Sea) 5
Gueroun, Sonai M; Molinero, Juan-carlos; Piraino, Stefano; Dali Yahia, Mohamed Nejib.
Understanding the life cycle strategies and predatory impact of alien jellyfish species is critical to mitigate the impact that these organisms may have on local populations, biodiversity, and ultimately on the functioning of food webs. In the Mediterranean Sea, little is known about the dynamics of alien jellyfish, despite this biodiversity hotspot being one of the most threatened areas by increasing numbers of alien jellyfish. Here, we investigated the population dynamics and predatory impact of a non-indigenous scyphomedusa, Aurelia solida Browne 1905, in the Bizerte Lagoon, Tunisia. The study was based on bimonthly surveys performed over two consecutive years, from November 2012 to August 2014. Field observations showed that the planktonic phase of A....

Spatio-temporal trends in zooplankton biomass in the northern Humboldt current system off Peru from 1961-2012 5
Aronés, Katia; Grados, Daniel; Ayón, Patricia; Bertrand, Arnaud.
Anchovy (Engraulis ringens) is the most important exploited fish species in the Northern Humboldt Current System (NHCS) off Peru. This species, as well as most other pelagic resources, mainly forage on zooplankton. The NHCS is bottom-up controlled at a variety of scales. Therefore, fish biomass is driven by the abundance of their prey. In this context, we studied the spatiotemporal patterns of zooplankton biomass in the NHCS from 1961-2012. Data were collected with Hensen net all along the Peruvian coast. To transform zooplankton biovolume into biomass we used a regression that was calibrated from 145 zooplankton samples collected during four surveys and, for which, precise information was available on both biovolume and wet weight. The regression model...

Monthly variability of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton abundance and composition were studied in 6 stations in the Gulf of Tunis between February 2003 and January 2004. Plankton trawls were horizontal, in surface and at night. Study area seems to be influenced by climatic conditions and the outflow of Majreda River that affect the surface temperature and salinity. Copepods, with many abundance picks in the year, formed the most abundant group (84%) followed by cladocerans (8%) and chaetognaths (3%). The swarms of appendicularians, cladocerans and medusas then for zoe are in spring. The highest fish spawning periods was in summer then the highest larva abundance was in winter and summer.
