The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the filtration method (in situ vs. ex situ) on the dissolved/particulate partitioning of 12 elements in hydrothermal samples collected from the Lucky Strike vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge; MAR). To do so, dissolved ( <0.45 mu m) and particulate Mg, Li, Mn, U, V, As, Ba, Fe, Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu were measured using different techniques (HR-ICP-MS, ICP-AES and CCSA). Using in situ filtration as a baseline, we showed that ex situ filtration (on-board and on shore after freezing) resulted in an underestimation of the dissolved pool, which was counterbalanced by an overestimation of the particulate pool for almost all the elements studied. We also showed that on-board filtration was acceptable for the... |

A set of 75 wine samples from seven of the major wine producing regions in Chile were analyzed with flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) to determine their content of major metallic elements (K, Mg, Ca, Na, Fe and Zn). The results obtained were further analyzed with principal component analysis (PCA) in an attempt to loosely discriminate these wines according to grape type and geographical origin. The metal concentrations measured were within normal ranges, according to previously published data from other wine producing countries. Multivariate statistics allowed the possibility to reasonably discriminate between red and white wines, and to show a distinctive pattern of Na concentration, with higher total contents for the wines produced in the... |

Abstract There is a growing concern about health and food safety when it comes to processed food. In the present study, it has been hypothesized that tomato sauces contain high amounts of metals possibly leached from packaging. Concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Sn and Sb were determined by ICP-MS in tomato sauces stored in metallic, plastic, cellulosic and glass packaging. Packaging composition was determined by XRF. This study has also determined Cr and Sn content, by GF AAS, in simulant solutions prepared to be in contact with the four types of packaging. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the concentrations of metals in products stored in different types of packaging (p>0.05), except for Sn and Ni. Canned... |

Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata is a unicellular green algae widely distributed in freshwater and soils. Due to its cosmopolitan characteristic, its use is recommended by national and international protocols in ecotoxicity studies. The alteration of phosphatase activities by agriculture pollutants like heavy metals has been extensively used as a biomarker in risk assessment and biomonitoring. In this study, we compared the extraction of acid phosphatase from P. subcapitata by different procedures and we studied the stability, substrates specificity, kinetics and the effect of Hg2+ in the crude extract. The freezing and thawing technique associated with probe sonication was the most suitable method of extraction. The enzyme was stable when frozen at -20ºC... |

Free-radical depolymerization with metallic catalysts has been investigated to depolymerize an exopolysaccharide (EPS), with a high molecular weight (> 10(6) g/Mol), produced by the bacterium Alteromonas macleodii subsp. fijiensis biovar deepsane. Three metals (copper, zinc and manganese) were used either alone or mixed. These metals led to the depolymerization of the high molecular weight bacterial polysaccharide with different efficiency. This study specifies some conditions required to produce, with good reproducibility and yield, EPS derivatives of reduced molecular weight ranging from 100,000 to 20,000 g/mol. The more influential parameters are specified. This is a first study to find suitable industrial conditions in the presence of these metallic... |

Concentrations of volatile hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbonyl sulfide (OCS), methane thiol (MeSH), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) in the Seine estuary (France) were investigated in spring 2005 using samples collected from the first meter beneath the surface. Levels of dissolved metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Pb), suspended particulate matter, and particular organic carbon were also assessed. Maximum concentrations were 0.80 nM for H2S, 0.64 nM for OCS, 3.06 nM for MeSH, 11.06 nM for DMS, and 1.18 nM for DMDS, and different features were observed for the five volatile reduced sulfur compounds (VRSCs). Experiments were conducted to determine silver-VRSC conditional stability constants. Major interactions were observed between H2S and... |

The uptake and loss kinetics of Cd were determined in two species of scallops from the European coasts, the variegated scallop Chlamys varia and the king scallop Pecten maximus, following exposures via seawater, phytoplankton and sediment using highly sensitive radiotracer techniques (Cd-109). Results indicate that, for seawater and dietary pathways, C. varia displays higher bioaccumulation capacities in terms of uptake rate from water and fraction absorbed from ingested food (assimilation efficiency) than Pecten maximus. Regarding sediment exposure, P. maximus displayed low steady-state Cd transfer factor (TFSS < 1); however, once incorporated, a very large part of Cd transferred from sediment (92%) was strongly retained within R maximus tissues.... |

Mycorrhizal plants may present Mn toxicity alleviation and this depends on the plant-endophyte-environment interaction. The effectiveness of three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Glomus macrocarpum, G. etunicatum, G. intraradices) and a control without AMF in two soils: Typic Rhodudalf with high Mn availability and a Typic Quartzipsamment, with low Mn availability, was evaluated in a time-course experiment at 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks after soybean (Glycine max L.) seedling emergence. The objective was to select the most effective AMF species to enhance plant growth and to assess its effects upon Mn uptake by plants and Mn availability in the soil. For the sandy soil, AMF inoculation resulted in increased plant biomass, especially with G. intraradices and... |

The biosorption process, characterized by the use of biomass for removing metals from aqueous solutions, is an attractive technology using inactive and dead biomasses to remove heavy metals from aqueous solutions in the absence of metabolic activity necessary for intracellular accumulation. The desorption process, which concentrates the metal previously absorbed for possible reuse, is also important. The desorption of copper (Cu) (II) associated with the biomass of Cladosporium cladosporioides (Fres) de Vries was evaluated following the biosorption process (adsorption). Specifically, four eluents were used (all at a concentration 0.1 mol L-1), sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetate disodium and calcium chloride, as well as the... |

Impacted marine environments lead to metal accumulation in edible marine fish, ultimately impairing human health. Nevertheless, metal accumulation is highly variable among marine fish species. In addition to ecological features, differences in bioaccumulation can be attributed to species-related physiological processes, which were investigated in two marine fish present in the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME), where natural and anthropogenic metal exposure occurs. The European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax and Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis were exposed for two months to two environmentally realistic dietary cadmium (Cd) doses before a depuration period. Organotropism (i.e., Cd repartition between organs) was studied in two storage... |

The subcellular fractionation of the digestive gland cells of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis was performed to investigate the distribution of metals between organelles and cytosol and the different cytosolic fractions separated by gel-filtration chromatography. Total metal concentrations vary over 3 orders of magnitude, ranging from dwt for Pb to dwt for Zn. With the exception of Cd, Co, and Cu, metals were mostly bound to the organelles. Whereas no specific organelle compartment was found for Mn, Ph, and Zn, Fe was mainly associated with nucleus, brown body, and "boule" fraction (i.e., 52%) and 44% of the total Ag was contained in the lysosomal and mitochondria enriched fraction. The link of metals with hydrosoluble proteins in the cytosolic... |
