Trace elements were analyzed in fish of commercial interest to determine their importance in marine systems of the Western Indian Ocean and their bioaccumulation patterns. The results are equivalent or lower than levels reported in ichthyofauna worldwide. Certain values of muscular Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn were, however, above thresholds for human consumption. Levels varied among tissues, species and fish length, but were seldom influenced by the nutritional condition of the fish, its gender and its reproductive status. Correlations between hepatic Hg and Se levels in Swordfish (r(2) = 0.747) and Yellowfin Tunas (r(2) = 0.226), and among metallothionein linking metals imply the existence of detoxification processes in these species. Level differences between fish... |

Effects of simultaneous exposure of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, to both a harmful dinoflagellate that produces Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PST), Alexandrium minutum, and cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu), were assessed. Oysters were exposed to a mix of Cd-Cu with two different diets (i.e. A. minutum or Tisochrysis lutea) and compared to control oysters fed A. minutum or T. lutea, respectively, without metal addition. Metals and PST accumulations, digestive gland lipid composition, and cellular and biochemical hemolymph variables were measured after 4 days of exposure. Oysters exposed to Cd-Cu accumulated about thirty-six times less PSTs than oysters exposed to A. minutum alone. Exposure to Cd-Cu induced significant changes in neutral lipids (increase in... |

The distribution of Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd between the dissolved (<2 mu m) and the particulate (>2 mu m) fractions was measured after in-situ filtration in two hydrothermal habitats. The total metal concentration ranges exhibit a clear enrichment compared with the seawater concentration, accounting for the hydrothermal input for all the metals considered. Iron is the predominant metal (5-50 mu M) followed by Zn and Cu. Cd and Pb are present at the nM level. At the scale studied, the behavior of temperature, pH and dissolved iron is semi-conservative whereas the other dissolved and particulate metals are characterized by non-conservative patterns. The metal enrichment of the >2 mu m fraction results from the settlement and accumulation of particulate... |

Through the deep ocean, hydrothermal plumes disperse high concentrations of key chemical tracers including He-3, CH4, Mn, Fe, H2S, etc. This paper focuses on the distribution and behavior of total dissolved sulfide (sulfide hereafter) in hydrothermal plumes to show that its plume concentration decreases to subnanomolar a few kilometers from the vents. We also report on sulfide removal rates determined at in situ conditions; we observe that they are two orders of magnitude greater than for open ocean seawater, consistent with sulfide being detected only in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents. From our observations, we infer that the sole presence of sulfide in hydrothermal plumes locates active venting at the kilometer scale. |

This paper presents a study on the viability of the use of tissues of the Leptodactylus ocellatus species (Anura Leptodactylidae) as a bioindicator of metal pollution. The study is based on the determination and correlation of the concentrations of manganese, chromium, zinc, nickel, copper and iron in sediments and tissues (skin, muscles and viscera) of the frog Leptodactylus ocellatus collected in the middle region of the Contas River in Bahia, Brazil. The highest levels of the metals studied were found in the viscera of this animal. In this tissue, a higher correlation of the concentration of these metals with those found in sediments was also observed. The concentrations of elements found in the skin and muscles of these amphibians have revealed no... |

Acid drainage influence on the water and sediment quality was investigated in a coal mining area (southern Brazil). Mine drainage showed pH between 3.2 and 4.6 and elevated concentrations of sulfate, As and metals, of which, Fe, Mn and Zn exceeded the limits for the emission of effluents stated in the Brazilian legislation. Arsenic also exceeded the limit, but only slightly. Groundwater monitoring wells from active mines and tailings piles showed pH interval and chemical concentrations similar to those of mine drainage. However, the river and ground water samples of municipal public water supplies revealed a pH range from 7.2 to 7.5 and low chemical concentrations, although Cd concentration slightly exceeded the limit adopted by Brazilian legislation for... |

The Bay of Bourgneuf, France, is a main site of shellfish production. In the marshes along the bay, oyster intensive rearing and fattening need the mass production of microalgae. Salt groundwaters, available in this region, support a large part of this production for aquaculture. Studies carried out by local authorities have brought to the fore the accumulation of lead (Pb) in several samples of algal pastes derived from cultures using salt groundwater. The aim of this study was to compare growth, nutritional value and metal (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) uptake of four microalgae grown in two salt groundwaters or in enriched coastal seawater. Cultures of microalgae used in aquaculture (Haslea ostrearia, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema costatum and Tetraselmis... |

ABSTRACT: Martianthus leucocephalus is found in the semi-arid Northeast of Brazil and has high pharmacological potential due to the production of volatile compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the Cd (15, 30, 45 and 60µmol L-1), Cu (30, 60, 90 and 120µmol L-1) and Zn (150, 300, 450 and 600µmol L-1) levels on the growth of this species and its volatile compounds production. Apical cuttings were placed in plastic trays containing 6.0L nutrient solution, and after rooting, they were submitted to Cd, Cu and Zn treatments for 15 days. All the metals evaluated reduced the succulence and growth of all parts of M. leucocephalus . This effect was accompanied by the increase of Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations in all plant tissues. Volatile compounds content produced... |

Concerning in situ passive sampler deployment, several technical priorities must be considered. In particular, deployment time must be sufficiently long not only to allow a significant quantity to be accumulated to facilitate analysis but also to ensure that the signal is above the quantification limit and out of the blank influence. Moreover, regarding the diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) technique, deployment time must also be sufficiently long (at least 5 days) to avoid the interactions of the solutes with the material diffusion layer of the DGT and for the steady state to be reached in the gel. However, biofouling occurs in situ and modifies the surface of the samplers. In this article, we propose a kinetic model which highlights the biofouling... |

Interactions of micronutrients can affect absorption and bioavailability of other nutrients by a number of mechanisms. In aqueous solutions, and at higher uptake levels, competition between elements with similar chemical characteristics and uptake process can take place. The consequences of these interactions may depend on the relative concentrations of the nutrients. In this work, we measure the effects of increasing concentrations of iron, zinc, and copper on iron and copper uptake in Caco-2 cells. Intracellular Fe or Cu levels were affected by incubating with increased concentrations of metals. However, when the cells already had different intracellular metal concentration, the uptake of Fe or Cu was nor affected. In competition studies, we showed that... |

A short introduction provides some information about the Iron Library, a foundation of Georg Fischer Ltd, at Schaffhausen, which was established in 1949, to enable scientists and students the study of its historic collection, which is mainly concentrated on mining and metals, but includes all other related fields. Some outstanding details about the collection will be presented. The main topic of the contribution will be the research of Johann Jacob Scheuchzer (1672-1733) in the Swiss Alps. His research interests were similar to those of the well known universal scientist Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) and Johann Jakob Wagner (1641-1695), considered to be pioneers of the Alpine research in Switzerland. It is followed by biographical statements about Johann... |
