The activities of four colonies of Plebeia saiqui (Holmberg, 1903), of São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were studied from October, 1998 to September. 1999, comparatively during the oviposition period and the diapause. The construction of the cells was monitored by direct observation of the nests. The duration of the diapause period varied from 76 to 168 days. Monthly, the bees that left and entered were counted for 10 minutes, at each hour, during the complete period of flight activity. Influence of meteorological factors on the activities of bees flight was analyzed through simple and multiple regressions. The foraging activity of Geotrigona mombuca Smith, 1863 was studied under natural conditions aiming to verify the influence of seasonal changes on daily flight activity and annual cycle of the colony. Daily flight activity was monitored for a year based on the observation and counting of foragers leaving and entering the hive, as well as the kind of material transported and meteorological factors such as day time, temperature and relative humidity. The influence of seasonal changes was evidenced by alterations on daily rhythm of flight activity and by differences on transportation of food resources, building material and garbage. The massive number of fish mortalities that occurred in July of 1982 in Vilaine Bay is due to a very pronounced oxygen depletion in the bay's bottom waters. This loss was caused by the chronic fragility of this area, associated with an abnormal weather pattern. The endemism of partial oxygen depletion has been brought to light. The latter could be economically more significant than the anoxia of 1982. Preventative and warning actions have been proposed. From 1990 through 2001, the red tide continuously appeared and the number of red tide occurrence increased every year. A common condition for the red tide occurrence was heavy precipitation 2~4 days earlier, and the favorable conditions for the red tide formation were high air temperature, proper sunshine and light winds for the day in red tide occurrence. Melipona bicolor schencki occurs in southern Brazil and at high elevations in southeastern Brazil. It has potential for use in meliponiculture but this stingless bee species is vulnerable to extinction and we have little knowledge about its ecology. In order to gather essential information for species conservation and management, we made a study of seasonal flight activities in its natural environment. We sampled bees entering the nests with pollen, nectar/water and resin/mud, in five colonies during each season.
