Diurnal variation of methane emission from a paddy field in Brazilian Southeast 65
Lima,Magda Aparecida de; Pazianotto,Ricardo Antonio Almeida; Villela,Omar Vieira; Paraíba,Lourival Costa.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to investigate the diurnal variation of methane (CH4) emission in a flooded-irrigated rice field at different stages of the plant development under tropical climate in three growing seasons, in order to determine the most appropriate time for gas sampling in the Brazilian Southeast region. It aimed also to verify correlations between CH4 flux and air, water and soil temperatures, and solar radiation. The CH4 emissions were measured every 3-hour interval on specific days in different development stages of the flooded rice in the Experiment Station of the Agência Paulista de Tecnologia dos Agronegócios (APTA), Pólo Regional Vale do Paraíba, at Pindamonhangaba, State of São Paulo (22°55’ S, 45°30’ W), Brazil. Different CH4 emission...

Methane emission to the hydro- and atmosphere by gas bubble streams in the Dnieper paleo-delta, the Black Sea 13
Artemov, Yu. G.; Egorov, V. N.; Polikarpov, G. G.; Gulin, S. B..
To estimate methane flux from natural gas bubble streams (seepages) a combined approach was applied, inclusive of detailed echo survey of investigated area and data analysis with the use of specialized software, GIS technique and mathematic simulation. A precise location map of methane seepages in the Dnieper paleo-delta region was obtained. In total 2200 seepages were identified at the investigated area of 378.1 sq.km, which release 16.74 106 m³ at atmospheric pressure (STP), or 12.0 10-3 teragram (Tg) methane a year. Statistical distribution of individual seepage methane flux rates conforms to the lognormal law. We found that 1.9 % of methane from gas bubble streams reaches the atmosphere in gas phase, while 98.1 % dissolves in the water column. Thus,...

Relating sulfate and methane dynamics to geology: Accretionary prism offshore SW Taiwan 5

Geochemical data (CH4, SO42-, I-, Cl-, particulate organic carbon (POC), C-13-CH4, and C-13-CO2) are presented from the upper 30 m of marine sediment on a tectonic submarine accretionary wedge offshore southwest Taiwan. The sampling stations covered three ridges (Tai-Nan, Yung-An, and Good Weather), each characterized by bottom simulating reflectors, acoustic turbidity, and different types of faulting and anticlines. Sulfate and iodide concentrations varied little from seawater-like values in the upper 1-3 m of sediment at all stations; a feature that is consistent with irrigation of seawater by gas bubbles rising through the soft surface sediments. Below this depth, sulfate was rapidly consumed within 5-10 m by anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) at the...
