A soil quality index for subtropical sandy soils under different Eucalyptus harvest residue managements. Repositório Alice
SÃO JOSÉ, J. F. B. de; CHERUBIN, M. R.; VARGAS, L. K.; LISBOA, B. B.; ZANATTA, J. A.; ARAÚJO, E. F.; BAYER, C..
Eucalyptus harvest residues are attractive energy production resources for the forestry industry. However, their removal can have adverse impacts on soil quality and forest productivity, especially in sandy soils. In this study, we assessed the effects of Eucalyptus harvest residue managements with variable intensity on forest productivity and on physical, chemical, and biological indicators of the soil quality. The experiment was conducted in a Quartzipsamment (33 g kg− 1 clay) planted with Eucalyptus saligna in Barra do Ribeiro in southern Brazil. Before the Eucalyptus was planted, residues from the previous rotation were subjected to five different management treatments: (1) FRM, in which all forest residues (bark, branches, leaves, and litter) were...

Activity of soil microbial biomass altered by land use in the southwestern Amazon Bragantia
Mazzetto,André Mancebo; Cerri,Carlos Eduardo Pellegrino; Feigl,Brigitte Josefine; Cerri,Carlos Clemente.
ABSTRACT The increasing demand for food creates environmental problems, mainly due to the removal of native vegetation cover for agriculture expansion in Brazil. These changes in land use lead to changes in the soil organic matter dynamics. Microorganisms represent the most biological and physiological diversity in soil, as well as are responsible for more than 95% of the decomposition and nutrient cycling processes. The objective in this research was to check if there is difference of patterns in activity of soil microbial biomass under varied natural vegetation, pastures in use and agricultural systems recently established. The area covered by this study corresponds to the states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso. Canonical variate analysis was used in...

VIEIRA, R. F.; SILVA, C. M. M.; MAIA, A. de H. N.; FAY, E. F.; COELHO, K. C..
An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with the aim of determining an acceptable method to quantify the fungal population in a soil treated with the fungicide chlorothalonil. Doses of the fungicide ranging from 12 to 96mg AIgÿ1 soil were applied and microbial biomass carbon (C), soil ergosterol content, living hyphal length, as well as counts of total and cellulolytic fungi colonies, were measured 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 weeks after application. At the end of 16 weeks a new evaluation was done using the three ®rst methods. The microbial biomass C was the least sensitive parameter and, on balance, the living hyphal length was the most sensitive parameter for demonstrating effects of chlorothalonil on the fungal population. Some problems related to the...

Bacteria diversity and microbial biomass in forest, pasture and fallow soils in the southwestern Amazon basin Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Cenciani,Karina; Lambais,Marcio Rodrigues; Cerri,Carlos Clemente; Azevedo,Lucas Carvalho Basílio de; Feigl,Brigitte Josefine.
It is well-known that Amazon tropical forest soils contain high microbial biodiversity. However, anthropogenic actions of slash and burn, mainly for pasture establishment, induce profound changes in the well-balanced biogeochemical cycles. After a few years the grass yield usually declines, the pasture is abandoned and is transformed into a secondary vegetation called "capoeira" or fallow. The aim of this study was to examine how the clearing of Amazon rainforest for pasture affects: (1) the diversity of the Bacteria domain evaluated by Polymerase Chain Reaction and Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE), (2) microbial biomass and some soil chemical properties (pH, moisture, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, H + Al, and BS), and (3) the influence of...

Biomass and vegetation index by remote sensing in different caatinga forest areas. Repositório Alice
LUZ, L. R.; GIONGO, V.; SANTOS, A. M. dos; LOPES, R. J. de C.; LIMA JÚNIOR, C. de.
Continued unsustainable exploitation of natural resources promotes environmental degradation and threatens the preservation of dry forests around the world. This situation exposes the fragility and the necessity to study landscape transformations. In addition, it is necessary to consider the biomass quantity and to establish strategies to monitor natural and anthropic disturbances. Thus, this research analyzed the relationship between vegetation index and the estimated biomass using allometric equations in different Brazilian caatinga forest areas from satellite images. This procedure is performed by estimating the biomass from 9 dry tropical forest fragments using allometric equations. Area delimitations were obtained from the Embrapa collection of...

Carbon Stocks in Compartments of Soil Organic Matter 31 Years after Substitution of Native Cerrado Vegetation by Agroecosystems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ferreira,Eloisa Aparecida Belleza; Bustamante,Mercedes Maria da Cunha; Resck,Dimas Vital Siqueira; Figueiredo,Cícero Célio de; Pinto,Alexandre de Siqueira; Malaquias,Juaci Vitória.
ABSTRACT Changes in carbon stocks in different compartments of soil organic matter of a clayey Latossolo Vermelho Distrófico (Typic Haplustox), caused by the substitution of native savanna vegetation (cerrado sensu stricto) by agroecosystems, were assessed after 31 years of cultivation. Under native vegetation, a stock of 164.5 Mg ha-1 C was estimated in the 0.00-1.00 m layer. After 31 years of cultivation, these changes in soil C stocks were detected to a depth of 0.60 m. In the case of substitution of cerrado sensu stricto by no-tillage soybean-corn rotation, a reduction of at least 11 % of the soil C pools was observed. However, the adoption of no-tillage as an alternative to tillage with a moldboard plow (conventional system) reduced CO2 emissions by...
