Guimarães,Geovani Pereira; Reis,Mysrayn Yargo de Freitas Araújo; Silva,Dayanne Tomaz Casimiro da; Mendonça Junior,Francisco Jaime Bezerra; Converti,Attílio; Pessoa Jr,Adalberto; Damasceno,Bolívar Ponciano Goulart de Lima; Silva,José Alexsandro da.
Fungal infections have become a major problem of worldwide concern. Yeasts belonging to the Candida genus and the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans are responsible for different clinical manifestations, especially in immunocompromised patients. Antifungal therapies are currently based on a few chemotherapeutic agents that have problems related to effectiveness and resistance profiles. Microemulsions are isotropic, thermodynamically stable transparent systems of oil, water and surfactant that can improve the solubilization of lipophilic drugs. Taking into account the need for more effective and less toxic drugs along with the potential of thiophene derivatives as inhibitors of pathogenic fungi growth, this study aimed to evaluate the antifungal...

TORRES,Maycon de Paula Ribeiro; ESPRENDOR,Rhuan Vínicius de Freitas; BONALDO,Solange Maria; RIBEIRO,Elton Brito; VALLADÃO,Dênia Mendes de Sousa.
ABSTRACT Advances in nanotechnology, combined with the use of natural products, represent a promissing research field. Brazil is a country of a rich biodiversity, especially in the Amazon forest. Fruits commonly used by local communities, such as bacaba (Oenocarpus bacaba), are potentially important for prospection of industrial applications of natural products. In nanotechnology, microemulsions stand out for providing a modified release to conveyed substances. This work aimed to develop microemulsionated formulations of bacaba oil, characterize them and evaluate their stability. We determined the HLB (hydrophile-lipophilic balance) of bacaba oil for formulation development. Six formulations were selected from pseudoternary diagrams, which indicated the...

Macedo,Ludmila Branco; Lobato,Zélia Inês Portela; Fialho,Sílvia Ligório; Viott,Aline de Marco; Guedes,Roberto Maurício Carvalho; Silva-Cunha,Armando.
This study investigated the adjuvant potential of W/O/W multiple emulsions and microemulsions, comparing them with traditional aluminum hydroxide and oil-in-water emulsion adjuvants against bluetongue vaccine (BTV). Local inflammatory reactions were assessed in rabbits by measuring the temperature of the animals and the skin thickness at the site of application. Antibodies titers were determined by serum-neutralization test. Histological analyses of lesions at the site of adjuvants application were done. Results showed that multiple emulsion and microemulsion maintained their stability even in the presence of complex components and presented adequate characteristics for subcutaneous administration. They were able to induce immune response against BTV, but...

Corrêa,André Luís; Tamanho,Renato Batista; Moraes,Aury Nunes de; Beier,Suzane Lilian; Regalin,Doughlas; Farias,Felipe Hertzing; Spolti,Pâmela; Oleskovicz,Nilson.
This research aimed to evaluate the clinical and cardiorespiratory effects of a propofol formulation with nanometer droplet diameter in dogs. Six adult healthy female dogs weighing 14.8±1.2kg were used in this study. Each dog received two treatments with a 15-day washout period. A microemulsion (MICRO) or lipid emulsion (EMU) of propofol was administered intravenously (IV) for induction and maintenance of anesthesia. Anesthesia was maintained with a constant rate infusion of propofol (0.4mg kg-1 minute-1). Cardiorespiratory variables were recorded before induction (baseline), immediately after and at 15-minute intervals for 90 minutes after treatment. Arterial blood samples were also taken for blood gas analysis, except at 45 and 75 minutes after...

Microemulsion based on Pterodon emarginatus oil and its anti-inflammatory potential BJPS
Pascoa,Henrique; Diniz,Danielle Guimarães Almeida; Florentino,Iziara Ferreira; Costa,Elson Alves; Bara,Maria Teresa Freitas.
This article reports the development of a pharmaceutical product containing vegetable actives from a Brazilian medicinal plant. The possibility of forming a microemulsion using Pterodon emarginatus ("sucupira") oil was evaluated and the anti-inflammatory potential of this microemulsion was also examined. A formulation was developed using P. emarginatus oil, a mixture of ethoxylated Castor Oil (Ultramone(r) R-540/propylene glycol 2:1) (surfactant/cosurfactant) and distilled water at a ratio of 10:15:75, respectively. The microemulsion which was selected was then subjected to the preliminary stability test and analyzed in terms of average diameter of droplets, pH, zeta potential, and polydispersity index, on the 1st, 7th, 15th, and 30th days after...

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate optimized conditions for producing water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) microemulsions and spray-dried microcapsules of tomato extracts. The condition of highest yield for W/O/W microemulsification was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The independent variables were ratio of tomato extract to MCT (X 1: 1:9-2:8), concentrations of emulsifier (X2: 0.50-1.00), and ratio of W/O to secondary aqueous coating material (X 3: 1:5-1:9). According to the RSM results, the ratio of tomato extract to MCT at 1.24:8.76 (v/v), concentration of emulsifier at 1.00% (w/v), and ratio of W/O phase to secondary aqueous coating material of 1.00:6.16 (v/v) were found to be the optimal conditions for producing...

Physicochemical, in vitro and in vivo evaluation of flurbiprofen microemulsion Anais da ABC (AABC)
NAEEM,MUHAMMAD; RAHMAN,NISAR UR; TAVARES,GUILHERME. D.; BARBOSA,SÁVIO F.; CHACRA,NÁDIA B.; LÖBENBERG,RAIMAR; SARFRAZ,MUHAMMAD K..
ABSTRACTFlurbiprofen, a potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is widely used for relief of pain in patients suffering from rheumatic diseases, migraine, sore throat and primary dysmenorrheal. However, this drug has many gastrointestinal side effects produced by its oral administration, such as gastric bleeding and peptic ulcer. These effects were responsible for non-compliance among patients, which ultimately results in treatment failure. The physicochemical properties of flurbiprofen, make it a suitable candidate for transdermal drug delivery, which can overcome the drawbacks of oral administration. In this sense, microemulsions have been proved to increase the cutaneous absorption of lipophilic drugs when compared to conventional drug delivery...

Preparation and characterization of non-viral gene delivery systems with pEGFP-C1 Plasmid DNA BJPS
Karagöz,Uğur; Kotmakçı,Mustafa; Akbaba,Hasan; Çetintaş,Vildan Bozok; Kantarcı,Gülten.
ABSTRACT In recent years, non-viral delivery systems for plasmid DNA have become particularly important. They can overcome the disadvantages of viral systems such as insertional mutagenesis and unpredicted immunogenicity. Some additional advantages of non-viral gene delivery systems are; good stability, low cost, targetability, delivery of a high amount of genetic materials. The aim of the study was to develop novel non-viral nanosystems suitable for gene delivery. Two formulations were developed for this purpose: water-in-oil microemulsion (ME) and solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN). The microemulsion was composed of Peceol, Tween 80, Plurol oleique, ethanol and water. The SLN was consisting of Precirol, Esterquat-1 (EQ1), Tween 80, Lecithin, ethanol and...
