Moreira,Rennan Herculano Rufino; Lanferdini,Eloiza; Fonseca,Leonardo da Silva; Chaves,Rhuan Filipe; Garbossa,Cesar Augusto Pospissil; Saraiva,Alysson; Nogueira,Eduardo Terra; Abreu,Márvio Lobão Teixeira de.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of L-arginine supplementation in lactation diets on the productive and reproductive performance of pluriparous sows and their litters. Seventy-six sows of the same genetic line were assigned to four treatments in a completely randomized design with 19 replicates. The experimental unit was the sow and its respective litter. Treatments comprised a control diet (no L-arginine supplementation) and other three diets obtained by top dressing the control diet with 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% of L-arginine. L-arginine supplementation had no effect on any performance variables, body condition, milk production, or weaning-estrus interval. There was a quadratic effect on percentage of protein and fat in milk as...

Economic values for milk production and quality traits in south and southeast regions of Brazil 96
Cardoso,Vera Lucia; Lima,Maria Lucia Pereira; Nogueira,José Ramos; Carneiro,Raul Lara Resende de; Sesana,Roberta Cristina; Oliveira,Elisa Junqueira; El Faro,Lenira.
The objective of this study was to calculate economic values for milk (MY), protein (PY) and fat productions (FY) and somatic cell count (SCC) which could be used to compose an economic index to rank animals involved in an international genetic evaluation program of Holstein cattle used in the commercial dairy population in Brazil. The main milk production systems (MPS) prevailing in the South and Southeast were defined based on the feeding management and production level of herds. To calculate feeding costs, energy requirements for the production of one kg of milk with the respective average protein and fat contents of each MPS were calculated. Feeding costs were obtained based on the regional prices of the diets' components. To calculate revenues, milk...

Demeter, Robert Milan; Bovenhuis, Henk; Kristensen, Anders Ringgaard; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; van Arendonk, Johan A.M..
The objective of the study was to assess the farm level economic implications of value-adding genetic selection strategies to improve milk fat composition. Selection based on a quantitative trait (ratio of total saturated to total unsaturated fatty acids in milk) or a known genotype (for the DGAT1 gene) was considered. Technical and economic performance of hypothetical herds were computed by a herd optimization and simulation model. It was assumed that the herds are already bred for the specific milk composition, and the transition period was not considered. Correlated effects of the selection scenarios on milk production, female fertility, and functional longevity traits were accounted for. Results showed that increasing the total unsaturated fatty acids...

Zafalon,Luiz Francisco; Fim Júnior,Guilherme Aparecido; Vaso,Carolina Orlando; Lopes,Nahryda Samara dos Santos; Veschi,Josir Laine Aparecida; Santana,Raul Costa Mascarenhas.
ABSTRACT: Mastitis negatively influences the survival and weight gain of ovines for meat production. The purpose of this study was to investigate, in sheep for meat production, the occurrence of subclinical mastitis in ewes at the end of lactation and beginning of the consecutive lactation and to assess the composition and cellular characteristics of milk as a function of different rainfall indices. Mammary halves (821) of Santa Ines (479) and Morada Nova (342) ewes were examined. Milk samples were collected in two different moments of lactation: at weaning and postpartum of the consecutive lactation. Sample collection periods were called "dry" or "rainy" according to the rainfall index in the month immediately before the month of collection. The...

Milk yield and reproductive performance of dairy heifers and cows supplemented with polyunsaturated fatty acids 86
Gonzalez,Félix; Muiño,Rodrigo; Pereira,Víctor; Martinez,Diego; Castillo,Cristina; Hernández,Joaquín; Benedito,José Luis.
The objective of this work was to determine productive and fertility responses of Holstein-Friesian heifers and cows to supplementation with extruded linseed and soybean as sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Supplementation had a positive effect on profitability, with significant increases in milk yield in supplemented cows, but not in heifers. Treatments had no effect on milk fat content, but higher milk protein contents were observed with supplementation. A higher conception rate was found for supplemented heifers, but not for cows. Fat sources containing PUFAs are recommended for dairy cattle supplementation, since they improve fertility in heifers and milk yield in cows.
