In Sri Lanka coconut poonac, a byproduct produced from the coconut oil production process, is being used for feeding dairy cattle. Though poonac is cheaper than formula feed, it is feared that the bad effects of cattle health due to its high fat content. This study clarified the economic effect of poonac feeding on dairy farming. We conducted interview survey with 40 small-scale farms in Kurunegala District, and analyzed the relationship among poonac feeding, cattle disease rate, raw milk production and dairy farming income by using the multiple regression analysis. The risk of cattle disease increased as poonac feeding. On the other hand, participation in the feeding training was effective in reducing outbreaks of disease in dairy cattle. Moreover, we...

Perfil socioeconômico de produtores de leite da região sudoeste do Paraná: um estudo a partir de diferentes níveis de produtividade AgEcon
Parre, Jose Luiz; Bankuti, Sandra Mara Schiavi; Zanmaria, Nelito Antonio.
The aim of this work is to characterize milk producers in Southwestern Paraná. It has been considered technical, technological, managerial, economic and social aspects. 202 producers have been interviewed, grouped into three distinct clusters, according to productivity levels. As results, milk producers in the region presented, on average, superior indicators when compared to data in Paraná, ratifying better organization and productive system in the region. Relevant differences among producers with different productivity levels could be pointed out. Low-productivity producers, in general, are more engaged in rural work, produce low volume of milk and work in milk activity for longer time, which can indicate path dependency. Besides that, higher percentage...

The impact of dietary dry yeast on lactation curves of primiparous and multiparous Saanen goats Animal Sciences
Gomes, Ludmila Couto; Alcalde, Claudete Regina; Souza, Rodrigo de; Molina, Bruna Susan de Lábio; Lourenço, Daniela Andressa de Lino; Martins, Elias Nunes.
Twenty-four Saanen goats (fifteen multiparous and nine primiparous) during their lactation period were used, from the kidding until the 200th day of lactation; and were distributed in a completely randomized design and in a factorial arrangement (3 diets x 2 parity orders). The diets were composed of either soybean meal (SBM), soybean meal plus inactive dry yeast (SMDY) or inactive dry yeast (DY) used as the protein source. The analyses of milk yield, body weight and dry matter intake (DMI) were made through the Bayesian methodology. For construct the lactation curves were used the Wood’s nonlinear model. The inclusion of inactive dry yeast in the diets reduced the rate of yield increase until the lactation peak for primiparous goats, but for multiparous...
