Association of IGF-I gene polymorphisms with milk yield and body size in Chinese dairy goats Genet. Mol. Biol.
Deng,Chanjuan; Ma,Rongnuan; Yue,Xiangpeng; Lan,Xianyong; Chen,Hong; Lei,Chuzhao.
The association of IGF-I gene polymorphisms with certain traits in 708 individuals of two Chinese dairy-goat breeds (Guanzhong and Xinong Saanen) was investigated. Polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and DNA sequencing methods were employed in screening for genetic variation. Two novel mutations were detected in the 5'-flanking region and in intron 4 of IGF-I gene, viz., g.1617 G > A and g.5752 G > C (accession D26119.2), respectively. The associations of the g.1617 G > A mutation with milk yield and the body size were not significant (p > 0.05). However, in the case of g.5752 G > C, Xinong Saanen dairy goats with the CG genotype presented longer bodies (p < 0.05). Chest circumference (p < 0.05)...

Cubic-spline interpolation to estimate effects of inbreeding on milk yield in first lactation Holstein cows Genet. Mol. Biol.
Geha,Makram J.; Keown,Jeffrey F.; Van Vleck,L. Dale.
Milk yield records (305d, 2X, actual milk yield) of 123,639 registered first lactation Holstein cows were used to compare linear regression (y = β0 + β1X + e) ,quadratic regression, (y = β0 + β1X + β2X2 + e) cubic regression (y = β0 + β1X + β2X2 + β3X3 + e) and fixed factor models, with cubic-spline interpolation models, for estimating the effects of inbreeding on milk yield. Ten animal models, all with herd-year-season of calving as fixed effect, were compared using the Akaike corrected-Information Criterion (AICc). The cubic-spline interpolation model with seven knots had the lowest AICc, whereas for all those labeled as "traditional", AICc was higher than the best model. Results from fitting inbreeding using a cubic-spline with seven knots were compared...

Dairy cow monitoring by RFID Scientia Agricola
Stankovski,Stevan; Ostojic,Gordana; Senk,Ivana; Rakic-Skokovic,Marija; Trivunovic,Snezana; Kucevic,Denis.
Dairy cows identification and monitoring on small cattle farms are usually based on the utilization of barcode technology. This kind of identification technology is unsuitable for dairy cows milking and feeding process automation. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is a better solution in this case. This paper describes the research and implementation of the milking cycle´s automated monitoring with the use of RFID tags conducted on a small cattle farm in the Republic of Serbia. This solution is based on RFID system which consists of two parts. First part includes control box, two Ultra High Frequency (UHF) RFID readers operating at frequency of 915 MHz and RFID tags glued onto the dairy cow ear labels. Second part includes software modules...

Ferreira,Abílio G.T.; Henrique,Douglas S.; Vieira,Ricardo A.M.; Maeda,Emilyn M.; Valotto,Altair A..
The objective of this study was to evaluate four mathematical models with regards to their fit to lactation curves of Holstein cows from herds raised in the southwestern region of the state of Parana, Brazil. Initially, 42,281 milk production records from 2005 to 2011 were obtained from "Associação Paranaense de Criadores de Bovinos da Raça Holandesa (APCBRH)". Data lacking dates of drying and total milk production at 305 days of lactation were excluded, resulting in a remaining 15,142 records corresponding to 2,441 Holstein cows. Data were sorted according to the parity order (ranging from one to six), and within each parity order the animals were divided into quartiles (Q25%, Q50%, Q75% and Q100%) corresponding to 305-day lactation yield. Within each...

Impact of the factors of animal production and welfare on robotic milking frequency PAB
Córdova,Helder de Arruda; Alessio,Dileta Regina Moro; Cardozo,Leonardo Leite; Thaler Neto,André.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of production factors on milking frequency and the latter’s effect on animal welfare in robotic milking. The experiment was performed with Holstein Friesian cows housed in free-stall barns. To assess the impact of production factors, body condition score, milk yield, and concentrate intake were determined. To determine the effects of the milking frequency on welfare, the locomotion and teat-end scores and serum cortisol level were evaluated. Three experimental groups were formed according to the daily average milking frequency: 1.0 to 1.9, 2.1 to 2.9, and above 3.0 milkings per day. The decrease in milking frequency during lactation was related to the reduction in concentrate intake and milk...

Milking Machines on Chilean Dairy Farms and their Effects on Somatic Cell Count and Milk Yield: A Fied Study Agricultura Técnica
Garcés A,R; López F,J; Bruckmaier,R. M.
Thirty-four dairy farms in the south central zone of Chile were evaluated in order to describe the functioning of the milking machines with respect to vacuum, pulsators, milklines and cluster characteristics and their relationship with somatic cell count (SCC) and milk yield (MY). An inadequate nominal vacuum level (NVL) was one factor that influenced negatively SCC. The increase of SCC was more accentuated in those milking machines with high-lines than mid- and low-lines. MY was also negatively influenced by an inadequate high NVL. Higher MY value was found in those farms which had < 44 kPa NVL. In all cases, effective vacuum reserve deficit (EVRD) produced SCC above international recommendations. The EVRD effect was not significant (P > 0.05) on...

Protected fat and variable level of protein in diets of crossbreed cows in early lactation Animal Sciences
Souza Júnior, Alcy Heleno de; Lana, Rogério de Paula; Teixeira, César Roberto Viana; Gionbelli, Mateus Pies; Veloso, Cristina Mattos; Rennó, Luciana Navajas.
Current study evaluated the inclusion of protected fat and different levels of crude protein (CP) in the diet of crossbreed cows in early lactation. Twelve cows were distributed in a 4 x 4 factorial design, with four treatments (12 or 16% CP, with or without MEGALAC-E®). Statistical analyzes with ANOVA and Pearson’s linear correlation procedures were performed. Protected fat did not affect intake of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) (p > 0.05). Increased CP raised consumption of CP and EE and decreased the non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC; p <0.05). Protected fat increased (p <0.05) the digestibility of DM, OM, CP and ashes in the lower protein content. CP increase raised the level of blood and urinary urea (p < 0.05). There was no difference...
