Between c. 23 and 8 Ma, western Amazonia was occupied by the vast Pebas long-lived lake/wetland system. The Pebas system had a variety of influences over the evolution of Miocene and modern Amazonian biota; it formed a barrier for the exchange of terrestrial biota, a pathway for the transition of marine biota into freshwater Amazonian environments, and formed the stage of remarkable radiations of endemic molluscs and ostracods. The lithological variation of the Pebas Formation has furthermore enhanced edaphic heterogeneity in western Amazonia, sustaining present-day high terrestrial diversity in the region. |

ABSTRACT The "Yanghecun specimen", a proboscidean specimen represented by a mandible from Miocene of China and previously described as Gomphotheriidae, is here reviewed and described as a new genus and species of Mammutidae: Sinomammut tobieni. This taxon is a longirostrine mastodon, lacking lower tusks, and bearing a wide last molar with oblique and non-inflated lophids, broad transverse interlophids, and yoke-like wear figures. Phylogenetic analysis of Mammutidae based on dental and mandibular features recovered S. tobieni as sister group of the mastodon Mammut. The longirostrine condition and the well-developed lower incisors seem to be primitive for Mammutidae, while the brevirostry is the derived condition, probably emerged during the middle Miocene... |

An incomplete odontocete (Mammalia, Cetacea) skull from Middle Miocene Miste Bed (near Winterswijk in the eastern part of The Netherlands) is described as Vanbreenia trigonia, a new genus and species. The skull exhibits a short rostrum with only two maxillary teeth for each toothrow and with narrow and toothless apical portion exclusively formed by the premaxilla. Considering this last character, the specimen could belong to the Eurhinodelphinidae even if a certain attribution is not possible because of the incompleteness of the specimen. Vanbreenia n. gen. could represent a specialized adaptation to bottom suction feeding among the eurhinodelphinids. |

Spirobranchus corrugatus, a little known species, is redescribed based on ample material from Australia, Indonesia, Japan and the Seychelles. The species is characterized by a seemingly porous tube, sunk into the substrate. Characteristically, the opercular plate shows a number of radial ridges on its distal surface, resembling Middle Miocene microfossils from Poland. The ventral rim of the opercular bulb of Sp. corrugatus bears numerous ocelli, with single lenses. A comparison with similar species is given. |

Incomplete drill holes produced by naticid snails are occasionally found in late Cenozoic gadid otoliths from the North Sea Basin. Among the Neogene otoliths found at Mill-Langenboom naticid drill holes are relatively common. Their occurrence is linked to strata that formed under reduced rates of sedimentation and/or that reflect non-sedimentation and erosion. High-resolution seismic data have been acquired in June 2008 on the Armorican Shelf (AS), in the northern Bay of Biscay, in order to reassess its stratigraphic architecture in detail and to study the impact of eustasy, tectonic and sediment delivery on the margin sedimentary record. Several profiles show fluvial-type incisions of several tens of meters (up to 54 m) associated to a widespread erosion surface. Several hypotheses are proposed for the stratigraphic position of this surface and incisions. We suggest Middle to Late Miocene age. Crustaceans remain poorly known from the Miocene of Jamaica. Herein, we report three species from the upper Miocene August Town Formation of Fowl House Spring, parish of St. Thomas, southeast Jamaica; poorly preserved propodi of a mud shrimp, “Callianassa” sp.; the anterior part of the carapace of Mithraculus sp. aff. Mithraculus coryphe (Herbst); and the cirripede Tetraclita sp. cf. T. stalactifera (Lamarck). Mithraculus sp. aff. M. coryphe at Fowl House Spring considerably extends the stratigraphic occurrence of the genus in the Antillean region down into the Miocene. Hitherto, fossil T. stalactifera in the Caribbean was known from the Plio-Pleistocene of Curaçao and the Pleistocene of Venezuela. |

Three families, two genera and two species are recorded for the first time for the Cuban Cretaceous to Pleistocene geologic age. The genera Persephona Leach, 1817 (Leucosiidae), Mithrax Desmarest, 1823 (Majidae) and Panopeus Milne Edwards, 1834 (Panopeidae) are well known in the Recent of the Caribbean region. Fossils of these taxa are found in formations from lower Miocene to upper Pleistocene in age in the Caribbean. Portunus oblongus Rathbun, 1920, an extinct species, is the first species of Portunus Weber, 1795 recorded from Cuban Oligocene–Miocene. The distribution of the Early Miocene galericine Galerix symeonidisi, with records from Greece, Germany, Spain and Austria is discussed. The identification of G. cf. symeonidisi from the Anatolian Çankiri basin is changed into G. cf. uenayae on the basis of additional material. Galerix symeonidisi enters Europe at the MN 3/ MN 4 transition. Differences in the pattern of replacement of the preceding Galerix species in Germany and Spain suggest that ecological factors played a role in that replacement. The Cerro de los Batallones (Los Batallones Butte) is located in the central-northern area of the Madrid Basin, central Spain. Nine vertebrates localities containing a large variety of mammals of Upper Vallesian Age (Late Miocene) have been found associated with the sediments forming the butte. From bottom to top, these sediments consist of magnesian lutite beds (Unit I), paleosols formed of sepiolite and opal (Unit II), and siliclastic, marlstone and carbonate beds (Unit III). This study investigates the stratigraphic evolution of the Late Oligocene - Early Miocene carbonate platforms of the Yadana area (offshore Myanmar). Well data, regional 2D and local 3D seismic surveys allow the identification of three shallow-water carbonate platforms (Yadana, 3DF and 3DE) showing various morphologic and stratigraphic patterns influenced by the presence of a paleohigh. Miocene deposits in western Amazonia and adjacent areas of South America harbour a diverse suite of endemic corbulid bivalves, commonly referred to as Pachydontinae, that show a wide variety of morphologies. Especially in the Miocene Pebas Formation (Peru, Colombia and Brazil), this group diversified spectacularly. The insectivores from the Thrace locality of Karydia (MN 4) are described, as well as an erinaceid molar from thenearby locality of Komotini (MN 5). The Karydia assemblagecontains the same genera of the Greek MN 4 localityAliveri, with the addition of a shrew and of Plesiosorex.
