Ácaros (Arachnida, Acari) da seringueira (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) no Estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil Zoologia
Ferla,Noeli Juarez; Moraes,Gilberto José de.
Mites started to be considered economically important on rubber tree since the early 1990's, when they were considered responsible for damages caused to this crop and by the consequent yield reduction. The aim of this work was to determine the mites present on this crop in the State of Mato Grosso and to elaborate a key for the separation of the species found. This study was conducted in fields of Plantacoes Edouard Michelin Ltda., in Itiquira, and Triângulo Agro-Industrial S/A. in Pontes e Lacerda. Samplings were conducted monthly in six different clones: PB 260, PR 255, IAN 713, IAN 873, FX 3864 and RRIM 600. Clones PB 260 and IAN 873 were sampled between August 1998 and July 2000; other clones were sampled between August 1999 and July 2000. In the...

Ácaros predadores (Acari) em plantas nativas e cultivadas do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Ferla,Noeli Juarez; Moraes,Gilberto José de.
This research was carried out in twenty counties of the following regions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul: Plain, Central Depression, Plateau and Coast Plain to find out the diversity of mite predators in these places. Forty-six vegetable species were sampled, thirty species of miles of the families Anystidae, Ascidae, Cheyletidae, Cunaxidae, Phyloseiidae and Stigmaeidae were mel. The Phytoseiidae were the mite that presented the greatest diversity, being present in the majority of the sample plants. Most of the Phytoseiidae that were met belong to five species of the Euseius Wainstein, 1962 genus, the second genus of this family was Iphiseiodes DeLeon, 1966, with just one species. The Stigmaeidae come up as second family in number but fewer than...

Developmental origins of normal and anomalous random right-left asymmetry: lateral inhibition versus developmental error in a threshold trait Naturalis
Palmer, A.R..
Dramatic examples of right-left asymmetry often inspire adaptive explanations, simply because it is hard to imagine how such forms could not be functionally significant. But are conspicuous morphological asymmetries necessarily adaptive? Surprisingly, in some species where direction of asymmetry is random, asymmetry in bilaterally paired traits may arise as a developmental error in a threshold trait. When cases of asymmetry are rare within a species, they are easily recognized as developmental errors. However, as asymmetrical individuals become more common, or if the asymmetry is in a signaling trait, the temptation to advance an adaptive explanation grows, particularly if the asymmetry is not clearly maladaptive. Several models of the ontogeny of...

The mites of three rubber tree cultures (Cedral, Pindorama and Taquaritinga) in order to determine the abundance of populations, the richness, the diversity and the degree of similarity among the communities was studied. Twenty one species were found, five of which were common to the three cultures. The richness and the abundance were greatest at the beginning of the dry season. The composition of communities differed probably as consequence of the kind of neighboring vegetation to each area, and because of the acaricid pulverization on the culture of Taquaritinga, reductng the richness of mite species in that area. The influence of neighboring vegetation can be shown by the occurrence of Iphiseiodes zuluagui Denmark & Muma, 1972, a common species...

Fat body morphology of Eriopis connexa (coleoptera, coccinelidae) in function of two alimentary sources BABT
Sarmento,Renato de Almeida; Oliveira,Hamilton Gomes de; Holtz,Anderson Mathias; Silva,Solange Marques da; Serrão,José Eduardo; Pallini,Ângelo.
This work investigated the influence of two alimentary sources: aphids and mites, in the morphology of the fat body of E. connexa. Results showed that fat body cells of individuals fed with aphids presented areas more than three folds higher (511 ± 98,7µm²) than those of beetles fed with mites (162 ± 34,9µm²). Histochemical tests showed that nutrient amount stored in fat body was higher in lady-beetles fed on aphids.

Functional response of the predator Eriopis connexa (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to different prey types BABT
Sarmento,Renato Almeida; Pallini,Angelo; Venzon,Madelaine; Souza,Og Francisco Fonseca de; Molina-Rugama,Adrián José; Oliveira,Claudinei Lima de.
This work evaluated the functional response of adult females of Eriopis connexa to different densities of Macrosiphum euphorbiae and Tetranychus evansi. When preying upon aphids, E. connexa presented a sigmoidal functional response (Type III). This behavior, however, changed drastically to an exponential (Type II) functional response, when mites (T. evansi), rather than aphids, were offered to E. connexa. Such different patterns showed that this coccinellid needed to adopt distinct strategies according to the kind of prey available. Since predators were believed to be able to regulate prey populations only when adopting Type III functional response. E. connexa would be a good candidate for a biological control agent of M. euphorbiae, but would not suppress...

Genetic diversity of Hirsutella thompsonii isolates from Thailand based on AFLP analysis and partial beta-tubulin gene sequences Genet. Mol. Biol.
Tigano,Myrian S.; Adams,Byron; Maimala,Saowanit; Boucias,Drion.
Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was used to investigate polymorphism among 43 Hirsutella thompsonii isolates (33 from Thailand) obtained from various mite species. The outgroups were an unidentified Hirsutella isolate along with Hirsutella nodulosa and Hirsutella kirchneri. Phylogenetic analyses of the AFLP data showed significant variation among isolates and the existence of three H. thompsonii clades. We also investigated the isolates using PCR with specific primers for the Hirsutella exotoxin gene Hirsutelin A (HtA) and 18 of these isolates were used for sequencing of the partial beta-tubulin gene. Phylogenetic analyses of beta-tubulin sequences showed two distinct H. thompsonii clades, one of which included AFLP clades I and II. For both...

Host-parasite interaction and impact of mite infection on mosquito population Rev. Bras. entomol.
Atwa,Atwa A.; Bilgrami,Anwar L.; Al-Saggaf,Ahmad I.M..
ABSTRACT During the present study, the host-parasite relationship between mosquitoes and parasitic mites was investigated. The 8954 individuals of male and female mosquitoes belonging to 26 genera: seven each of Aedes and Culex, six of Anopheles and one each of Toxorhynchites, Coquillettidia and Uranotaenia were collected from 200 sites. The male and female mosquitoes were collected from the State of Uttar Pradesh, located at 26.8500° N, 80.9100° E in North India by deploying Carbon dioxide-baited and gravid traps. The intensity of mite's infection, type and number of mites attached to mosquitoes, mite's preference for body parts and host sexes were the parameters used to determine host-parasite relationship. Eight species of mites: Arrenurus acuminatus,...

Macrocheles muscaedomesticae (Acari, Macrochelidae) and a species of Uroseius (Acari, Polyaspididae) phoretic on Musca domestica (Diptera, Muscidae): effects on dispersal and colonization of poultry manure Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Rodrigueiro,Tatyana Sacchi Carmona; Prado,Angelo Pires do.
Differences in the phoresy of the mites Macrocheles muscaedomesticae (Scopoli, 1972) (Macrochelidae) and Uroseius sp. (Polyaspidae) on the house fly, Musca domestica (Linnaeus, 1758) and the similarities in their phoretic dispersal and parasitism are discussed, altogether with the effects on predator-prey interactions. The prevalence and intensity of phoresy in the mite species were significantly related to the attachment site on the hosts. The phoresy of Uroseius sp. was correlated with temperature but not with rainfall and relative humidity. Selective pressure in the environment resulted in displacement and the emergence of local and regional populations. These results suggest that in each habitat the populations will use different resources and will...

Mite diversity (Arthropoda: Acari) on Euphorbiaceous plants in three localities in the state of São Paulo Biota Neotropica
Zacarias,Mauricio Sergio; Moraes,Gilberto José de.
Patches of natural vegetation have been reported to play an important role in the preservation of diversity of natural enemies of pest arthropods. Euphorbiaceous plants are common in natural and regenerated ecosystems in the State of São Paulo. Those plants may act as reservoirs of phytophagous mites and their respective natural enemies, both of which are also found on cultivated plants of the same family. The objective of the work reported in this paper was to study the diversity of mite species on euphorbiaceous plants in three regions of the State of São Paulo, and to compare the similarities between those regions in relation to the composition of the mite fauna they harbor. A total of 31,603 mites belonging to 105 species in 74 genera and 16 families...

Ocorrência e diversidade de ácaros (Acari, Arachnida) associados a Tabebuia roseo-alba (Ridl.) Sand (Bignoniaceae), no município de São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brasil Zoologia
Feres,Reinaldo José Fazzio; Bellini,Marcos Roberto; Rossa-Feres,Denise de Cerqueira.
This study reports the mite fauna associated with Tabebuia roseo-alba, a native and ornamental tree, determining the abundance and seasonal occurrence of species and the diversity of the community. Twenty three species were found belonging to 11 families, 10 of predatory habits and five phytophagous. The food habits of the eight remaining species are not known. Besides the great richness, the diversity was small, as consequence of the dominance of Lorryia formosa Cooreman, 1958 and Aculus sp., the most abundant species. These species occurred in the same microhabitat but with seasonal segregation: L. formosa was the most abundant in the dry season, while Aculus sp. occurred only in the rainy season. In August, when the plant lost its leaves, the following...
