Behavior of a portable solar dryer for pineapple fiber Ciência e Agrotecnologia

In Costa Rica, there has been a growing interest to use pineapple fiber from plant, for which current processes need to be improved or new processes need to be developed, with emphasis on drying methods. This work presents the design and evaluation of the behavior of a prototype portable solar dryer in four sites of Costa Rica. The design describes the main parts of the dryer, as well as how they were constructed. This study compares the chemical composition of the solution and exchange complex of soil in a 3-year-old irrigated vineyard (Vitis vinifera L., Red Globe cultivar) with that of adjacent clearing in the native hyperxerophyllic 'caatinga' vegetation. The soils are classified as Plinthic Eutrophic Red-Yellow Argisol; according to Soil Taxonomy they are isohyperthermic Plinthustalfs. Detailed physiographic characterization revealed an impermeable gravel and cobble covering the crystalline rocks; the relief of this layer was more undulating than the level surface. Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is widely produced in West Africa and South America and is a great economic tree crop, with so many industrial uses. In this work, the experimental drying kinetics of foreign species was investigated, and the experiments were carried out under isothermal conditions, using heated batch drier at 55, 70 and 81 ºC. The moisture ratio data obtained from change of moisture content with the drying time was fit to two thin layer drying model with good results. A faster drying process was observed at a higher drying temperature resulting in higher drying rates which is advantageous when evaluating costs. Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar as curvas de dessorção das sementes de milho-doce (Zea mays L.), cultivares Superdoce e Doce Cristal, e ajustar diferentes modelos matemáticos aos dados obtidos. As sementes das duas cultivares foram submetidas à dessorção em diversos níveis de temperatura (30, 40, 50 e 60oC), combinados com diferentes umidades relativas do ar (30, 40, 50 e 60%), até atingirem a umidade de equilíbrio. Os seguintes modelos matemáticos foram ajustados por análise de regressão: Henderson-Thompson, Chung-Pfost, Copace, Sigma-Copace, Sabbah e Smith. Comparison between THE oven and THE Karl Fischer methodS for THE determination of the moisture content of maize (Zea mays L.) and soya (Glycine max (L) Merrill) seeds Scientia Agricola

The objective of the present paper was to compare the seed water content of maize and soya, obtained by the oven method at different temperatures and the Karl Fischer method. The water contents used were 11.2 %, 12.8 % and 16.2 % for maize and 10.7 %, 12.4 % and 16.0 % for soya. Samples were dried for a sufficiently long time in order to obtain the same results in both methods. The results indicate that the official method for seed moisture determination (105oC oven method) should be revised in order to obtain more reliable results. The drying time in the oven varied according to the seed water content and the temperature used.

Abstract Water activity (aw) and moisture content (MC) of Turkish liquid flower and pine honeys were determined. Samples (706 flower and 257 pine) were collected during the honey harvesting seasons of 2010-2014 from 137 apiaries in locations with different climatic conditions all over the land. Up to date, this work is the first one seeking for a correlation between aw and MC for Turkish honeys, and also it is the largest and longest one among similar works to the best of the researchers’ knowledge. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar as curvas de umidade de equilibrio higroscopico e o calor latente de vaporizacao para as sementes de milho pipoca (Zea mays). O teor de umidade inicial das sementes era 23% b.u. Cashew nut centrifugal shelling machine was designed and constructed. Shelling efficiency and whole kernel recovery was evaluated for hot-oil roasted nuts on the machine. The design was based on the principle of the optimum kinetic energy that could break the cashew nut shell. The deformation energy used was 4.8763 Joules. Design, construction and evaluation of an evaporative cooler for the storage of sweet potatoes in the north Ghana CIGR Journal

A 14.4 × 86.0 × 70.0 cm mud evaporative cooler was designed and constructed for the storage of sweet potato roots to evaluate its performance in storing orange fleshed sweet potato variety (Apomuden) roots.  The investigation lasted for 14 weeks, from November 2014 to February, 2015.  The dry bulb (Tdb) and wet bulb temperatures (Twb) for the ambient storage ranged between 27.600C to 26.900C and 22.500C to 20.100C respectively with their corresponding RH of 64.00%, 77.00% respectively, while Tdb and Twb within the cooler ranged between 25.940C to 24.860C and 21.940C to 20.610C with corresponding R.H of 89.00% to 92.00% respectively.  The efficiency of the constructed evaporative cooler was 87.17%. The aim of this study was to compare three alternative methods to determine the moisture content of wood logs with the method recommended by ABNT. The moisture content of the wood was determined in a sawdust sample and with a electric meter capacitive. it was also determined the moisture content of a disk sample using the method recommended by ABNT. Using the regression model, all the methods were statistically similar. It was concluded that the use of alternative methods for determining the moisture content of wood in logs is feasible, to substitute the traditional method, but corrections must be implemented.

Determination of moisture content in lyophilized solids is fundamental to predict quality and stability of freeze-dried products, but conventional methods are time-consuming, invasive and destructive. The aim of this study was to develop and optimize a fast, inexpensive, noninvasive and nondestructive method for determination of moisture content in lyophilized mannitol, based on an NIR micro-spectrometer instead of a conventional NIR spectrometer. The objective of this study was to determine the geometric diameter of volumetric shrinkage in Jatropha seeds subjected to drying under six air conditions and to fit different mathematical models to the experimental values. Seeds with an approximate initial moisture content of 0.61 kgw kgdm-1 (kilogram of water per kilogram of dry matter) were dried in a convection oven at temperatures of 36, 45, 60, 75, 90, and 105°C until they reached a moisture content of 0.11 ± 0.006 kgw kgdm-1.
