A 5.3‐million‐year history of monsoonal precipitation in northwestern Australia ArchiMer
Stuut, Jan‐berend W.; De Deckker, Patrick; Saavedra‐pellitero, Mariem; Bassinot, Franck; Drury, Anna‐joy; Walczak, Maureen H.; Nagashima, Kana; Murayama, Masafumi.
New proxy records from deep‐sea sediment cores from the northwestern continental margin of Western Australian reveal a 5.3 million‐year (Ma) history of aridity and tropical‐monsoon activity in northwestern Australia. Following the warm and dry early Pliocene (~5.3 Ma), the northwestern Australian continent experienced a gradual increase in humidity peaking at about 3.8 Ma with higher than present‐day rainfall. Between 3.8 and about 2.8 Ma, climate became progressively more arid with more rainfall variability. Coinciding with the onset of the northern hemisphere glaciations and the intensification of the northern hemisphere monsoon, aridity continued to increase overall from 2.8 Ma until today, with greater variance in precipitation and an increased...

Geochemical provenance of sediments from the northern East China Sea document a gradual migration of the Asian Monsoon belt over the past 400,000 years ArchiMer
Beny, Francois; Toucanne, Samuel; Skonieczny, Charlotte; Bayon, Germain; Ziegler, Martin.
The reconstruction of the long-term evolution of the East Asian Monsoon remains controversial. In this study, we aim to give a new outlook on this evolution by studying a 400 kyr long sediment record (U1429) from the northern East China Sea recovered during IODP Expedition 346. Neodymium isotopic ratios and rare earth element concentrations of different grain-size fractions reveal significant provenance changes of the sediments in the East China Sea between East Asian continental sources (mainly Yellow River) and sediment contributions from the Japanese Archipelago. These provenance changes are interpreted as the direct impact of sea level changes, due to the reorganization of East Asian river mouth locations and ocean circulation on the East China Sea...

Hydrography and circulation of the Bay of Bengal during withdrawal phase of the southwest monsoon ArchiMer
Sarma, Yvb; Rao, Epr; Saji, Pk; Sarma, Vvss.
Hydrographic data were collected from 3 to 10 September 1996 along two transects; one at 18 degrees N and the other at 90 degrees E. The data were used to examine the thermohaline, circulation and chemical properties of the Bay of Bengal during the withdrawal phase of the southwest monsoon. The surface salinity exhibited wide spatial variability with values as low as 25.78 at 18 degrees N / 87 degrees E and as high as 34.79 at 8 degrees N / 90 degrees E. Two high salinity cells (S > 35.2) were noticed around 100 m depth along the 90 degrees E transect. The wide scatter in T-S values between 100 and 200 m depth was attributed to the presence of the Arabian Sea High Salinity (ASHS) water mass. Though the warm and low salinity conditions at the sea surface...

Interannual variability of the Tropical Indian Ocean mixed layer depth ArchiMer
Keerthi, M. G.; Lengaigne, M.; Vialard, Jerome; De Boyer Montegut, Clement; Muraleedharan, P. M..
In the present study, interannual fluctuations of the mixed layer depth (MLD) in the tropical Indian Ocean are investigated from a long-term (1960-2007) eddy permitting numerical simulation and a new observational dataset built from hydrographic in situ data including Argo data (1969-2008). Both datasets show similar interannual variability patterns in relation with known climate modes and reasonable phase agreement in key regions. Due to the scarcity of the observational dataset, we then largely rely on the model to describe the interannual MLD variations in more detail. MLD interannual variability is two to four times smaller than the seasonal cycle. A large fraction of MLD interannual variations is linked to large-scale climate modes, with the exception...

Littoral Pycnogonida from the Socotra Archipelago Naturalis
Bartolino, V.; Krapp, F..
Nine pycnogonid species from four different families were collected. Propallene socotrana n. sp. and Anoplodactylus erythraeus n. sp. are described. Callipallene cf. dubiosa Hedgpeth, 1949 is fi gured and its systematic position discussed. The Pycnogonida fauna around the Socotra Archipelago (Yemen) supports the hypothesis the Socotra Archipelago represents an important transient zoogeographic region between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Seasonal and intraseasonal biogeochemical variability in the thermocline ridge of the southern tropical Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Resplandy, L.; Vialard, Jerome; Levy, M.; Aumont, Olivier; Dandonneau, Y..
The Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) time series shows high variability of surface chlorophyll at seasonal and intraseasonal time scales in the oligotrophic southern tropical Indian Ocean thermocline ridge called the Seychelles-Chagos thermocline ridge (SCTR). The SCTR is characterized by an open ocean upwelling due to local Ekman pumping, which annually maintains the mixed layer (ML) shallow and is responsive to atmospheric forcing and in particular to the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) at an intraseasonal time scale. Here we present an overview of SCTR biogeochemistry and investigate the physical processes driving the response observed at seasonal and intraseasonal time scales. Using satellite observations and biophysical ocean...

Таксономический состав, численность и биомасса копепод в эпипелагиали Аравийского моря в периоды летнего и зимнего муссонов IBSS Repository
Прусова, И. Ю.; Смит, Ш. Л..
