Autoplusia egena (Guenée) is a moth distributed throughout the Western hemisphere. The larvae have already been found feeding on several different plant families, including important crops such soybeans and beans. To contribute to the knowledge of its biology in laboratory conditions, and considering the duration and the morphometry of each development stage, a laboratorial rearing was accomplished at 25 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH and 14h photophase. The larvae were fed with black bean leaves and the adults were fed with a honey solution at 10%. The results, expressed by the mean (± SE), for the periods of each stage were: egg 3.0 ± 0.00 d; larva 15.7 ± 1.25 d; pre-pupa 1.9 ± 0.05 d; pupa 8.8 ± 0.09 d and adult: longevity 12.1 ± 0.95 d, pre-oviposition 5.4 ± 0.50... |

The first putative hybrid tree species of the genus Bruguiera (Rhizophoraceae), B. × rhynchopetala, is reported from mangrove forests of China and Australia. It was described from China previously as a variety of B. sexangula. The hybrid is acknowledged as B. gymnorhiza × B. sexangula with parent species restricted to different parts of the Indo-West Pacific. The hybrid is recognised at north-eastern and south-eastern parts of the overlap area between parent distributions, but it appears absent in western parts. Further local assessments are needed across the range. Hybrid status is supported by: 1) intermediate and shared morphological characters; 2) distribution limited to areas of co-occurrence of B. gymnorhiza and B. sexangula; and 3) molecular... |

The white croaker Micropogonias fumieri (Desmarest, 1823) is one of the most abundant fish species in the Sepetiba Bay, being heavily exploited in fisheries. Two hundred eleven fishes, captured from October 1998 to September 1999, in monthly samplings with otter trawling, were studied. The aim here is to characterize morphometrics of populations that use de Bay in order to compare with other areas. Measurements included standard length (SL), head length (HL), Pre-dorsal distance (PDD), pectoral distance (PD), ventral distance (VD) and anal distance (AD), pectoral length (PL) and eye diarneter (ED). The values of HL, PDD, PD, VD, AD, were related to SL, while ED was related to HL. Scatterplot from logaritrnized data, by sex, were analyzed in order to assess... |

The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of the neuromuscular electrical stimulation (ES) on the metabolic and morfometric profile of the tibialis anterior muscle, antagonist to the soleus muscle which was stimulate, under the joint immobilization condition of the ankle for 7 and 15 days. The immobilization promoted the reduction in the muscle mass (I7: 17.36%, I15: 20.83%), in the glycogen content (I7: 48%, I15: 48%), in the muscle fibers areas (I7: 27%, I15: 40%) and increase in intramuscular connective tissue density (I7: 122%, I15: 206%). The EE didn't promote significant alterations in the mass of the immobilized groups, however, promoted increase in the glycogen (IEE7: 31.25%; IEE15: 56.25%), reduction in the muscle fibers areas (IEE7: 14%,... |

The aim of this study was to analyze the morphological variation of brown trout (Salmo trutta) in the Duero basin, an Atlantic river basin in the Iberian Peninsula, where a spatial segregation of two divergent lineages was previously reported, based on isozyme, microsatellite and mtDNA data. In these studies, two divergent pure regions (Pisuerga and Lower-course) and several hybrid populations between them were identified. Morphological variation was evaluated in 11 populations representative of the genetic differentiation previously observed in the Duero basin, using multivariate analysis on 12 morphometric and 4 meristic traits. A large differentiation between populations was observed (interpopulation component of variance: 41.8%), similar to that... |

The tongue is one of the most likely places for the primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) to arise in the western world. This work intends to do a morphometric evaluation of the cellular nucleus, as well as a morphometric analysis of the nucleolar organizer regions (NORs). The biopsy specimen was removed from patients with tongue SCC, staged T2N0M0, before they underwent treatment. They were, then, subject to hemiglossectomy and supraomohyoid neck dissection (SOHND) and presented different clinical evolution. According to that, they were subdivided in three groups: Group A, control group, formed by patients without tongue neoplasm (the histopathologic specimen was obtained from the Department of Pathology at Hospital de Base and Faculdade de Medicina de Sao... |

Nicotine is the most important alkaloid compound in tobacco. One of the major effects of nicotine is stimulation of mesocorticolimbic system. Prefrontal cortex plays a pivotal role in personality and mental state. It is considered the main cause of addiction as it is located in mesocorticolimbic dopamine system. Twenty four male rats were divided into four groups based on nicotine administration dose (0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 g/kg). After animals were anesthetized, their brains were fixed using transcardiac method. Tissue processing and Golgi staining were performed and the stained tissue sections were analyzed by optic microscope and Motic software. By increasing the dose, nicotine significantly decreased the number of neuronal processes. In the higher dose,... |

Morphometric data was collected on 859 naturalized swine in Brazil (Piau, Tatu, Nilo, Caruncho, Casco de Burro, Moura, Monteiro and Rabo de Peixe), Colombia (Criolla Zungo, Sanpedreño and Casco de Mula) and Uruguay (Mamellado), both on farm and in published material. Information was collected on breed, sex and age, as well as various morphometric measurements. Analysis of variance was carried out using PROC MIXED of SAS ® on phenotypic data. The coefficients of variance varied between 11.50 and 83.81%, and the coefficient of determination was medium to high. Females were in general smaller for most measurements than males, showing sexual dimorphism. The Moura was the closest naturalized breed to the commercial breeds, followed by the Piau, while the... |

The present study analyzed the sexual development, sizes at maturity and morphometric relationships for both sexes of Sympterygia acutaand S. bonapartii, endemic of south-western Atlantic Ocean. The examined specimens were obtained through research cruises and commercial fishing trips, during 2011 and 2012, along the southern Brazilian coast, in latitudes ranging from 34°28'S to 31°29'S and at depths between 15 and 142 m. Significant differences (p<0.05) in S. bonapartii and in S acutabetween sexes for the relationships total length (cm) - disc width (cm) and total length - total/eviscerated weight (g) respectively, demonstrated sexual dimorphism during the development in both species. The estimated size at maturity for males and females, respectively,... |

Investigating the Myotis levis complex is important for understanding the taxonomic status of the two subspecies currently recognized in it: Myotis levis levis (I. Geoffroy, 1824) and M. levis dinellii Thomas, 1902. Both M. levis levis and M. levis dinellii have been recently observed in sympatry in Argentina. This finding suggests that these populations might in fact correspond to distinct species rather than subspecies, as they have traditionally been designated. By using a multivariate morphometric approach, we demonstrate that M. l. levis has secondary sexual dimorphism in several measurements, with females being larger than males; sexual dimorphism was not detected in M. levis dinellii. However, we found morphometric differences between the two taxa.... |

The term Podencos refers to a group of dog breeds from Spain and classification in Group 5 of dog breeds by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The aim of this study was to compare traits morphometric breeds of Podencos; Canario, Ibecenco, Andaluz (small, medium and large) and Orito. Ten morphometric variables were measured in 385 animals (245 females and 140 males), head length, muzzle length, height at withers, rump height, body length, head width, rump width, chest depth, chest girth and the shin circumference. Morphostructural variables were more homogeneous in the Podenco Ibicenco and the Podengo Canario, because for many years there were gradually distinctive trait standards for each breed. The discriminate analysis indicated... |

Morphological traits, such as size and shape, may reflect a combination of ecological and evolutionary responses by organisms. Ants have been used to evaluate the relationship between the environment and species coexistence and morphology. In the present study, we analyzed the morphology of workers of Gnamptogenys striatula Mayr in different landscapes from the Atlantic Domain in southeastern Brazil, focusing on the variation in the morphological attributes of these populations compared to those from a dense ombrophilous forest. Eighteen morphological traits of functional importance for interactions between workers and the environment were measured to characterize the size and shape of the workers. In general, the results show that ants of urban areas... |
