A new species of Chaetostoma, an armored catfish (Siluriformes: Loricariidae), from the río Marañón drainage, Amazon basin, Peru Neotropical Ichthyology
Salcedo,Norma J.; Ortega,Hernán.
A new species of Chaetostoma was found in mountain tributaries of the río Marañon, Peru. The new species differs from all described congeners by having a tuft of odontodes, surrounded by naked skin, in the middle of each trunk lateral dermal plate, and in bearing more than 20 hypertrophied evertible odontodes on three cheek plates vs. evenly distributed odontodes on the whole surface of each dermal plate, and in bearing fewer than 20 hypertrophied evertible odontodes on three cheek plates in all other Chaetostoma species. The new species resembles two Cordylancistrus species in the presence of a tuft of odontodes in the middle of each trunk lateral dermal plate, but it exhibits a naked snout (vs. snout covered with plates in Cordylancistrus) and one...

Ecohydrological conditions of wetlands along a precipitation gradient in Patagonia, Argentina Ecología austral
Chimner,Rodney A; Bonvissuto,Griselda L; Cremona,M Victoria; Gaitan,Juan J; López,Carlos R.
Wetlands are an important component of the Andean ecology because of their wealth of biodiversity and endemisms, and the many environmental services they offer. However, baseline knowledge of the types of wetlands and their ecohydrological functioning is currently lacking. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize the types and the ecohydrological conditions of wetlands along a precipitation gradient in the Northern Patagonian Andes. This study took advantage of a strong precipitation gradient that occurs due to the rain shadow effect created by the Andes Mountains near the city of San Carlos de Bariloche. We selected five representative wetlands that are at similar elevations and latitudes, but under very different precipitation regimes....

Present status, scope and future needs for mechanization of apple cultivation in mountains of Himachal Pradesh, India CIGR Journal
Singh, Sukhbir; Vatsa, D K; Singh, Sukhbir.
A study was conducted to find out the present status and level of mechanization in different operations as carried out in apple cultivation. It was observed that most of these operations are performed manually by hand using traditional tools. Land preparation with spade (0.002 ha/h), pit digging with spade (3 to 4 pits/day of size 1x1x1 m), basin preparation with spade (2-4 basin/h), pruning by secateurs/pruner (1-2 plants/h) and harvesting by hand (12-15 kg h-1person-1) resulted in very low efficiency thus increase the cost of operation and drudgery and ultimately reduces the net returns to the growers. The bottlenecks in mechanization are due to undulating topography, small and scattered land holdings, lack of approach roads and lack of awareness among...

Seventeen spp. new records for the Moss flora of Iraq Phyton
Aziz,Farhad H..
Samples and specimens of mosses were collected in different parts of Erbil, Sulaimani, Duhok and Even Kirkuk provinces in Iraq Kurdistan Region, since 1998 to April 2010. This collection could be taken as the representative species of mosses on the soil surface, rocks and tree barks of either terrestrial and aquatic habitats of foothills, mountains and plains. A total of 67 species distributed in 32 genera, 16 families and 9 orders were found. Among them there were 17 species in 10 genera, the 2 families Schistogaceae and Ephemeraceae and the single order Schistostegales. The rarest species recorded in this study were Schistostega pennata with fern-like leaves within a Shanadar cave, Pottia wilsoni var. crinata, at the entrance of Ba-stoon cave, and...

The effects of forest-savanna-grassland gradients on bird communities of Chiquitano Dry Forests domain, in western Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
GODOI,MAURICIO N.; SOUZA,EDIVALDO O. DE.
ABSTRACT Different vegetation types are distributed in mountains according to altitude, topography and soil. The composition and structure of bird communities in these areas can change in relation to the vegetation gradient, with particular communities occupying each habitat type. In this study we present the changes in composition, species richness and bird abundance over the gradient of forests, savannas and altitudinal grasslands of Maciço do Urucum, a mountainous region located in the Chiquitano Dry Forests domain in western Brazil. We recorded 165 bird species through qualitative and quantitative methods. Forested savannas, riparian forests and submontane forests presented the highest richness and abundance of birds, while arboreal savannas and...
