Bacterial strains isolated from the kidney and liver of grey mullets, Mugil platanus Giinther, 1880, captured in Cananéia, São Paulo State, Brazil, in October 1996, belong to the genera Micrococcus, Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Aeromonas and Vibrio. The resistance/susceptibility patterns of the isolated micro-organisms to nine antimicrobial substances were determined, the more resistant bacteria had been Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium and Micrococcus. To the best of the authors knowledge this is the first bacteriological study done on Mugil platanus in Brazil. |

The present work describes mean values of hepatosomatic relation (HSR), splenosomatic relation (SSR) and viscerosomatic relation (VSR) in mullet, Mugil platanus Günther, 1880 (Mugilidae) from Cananéia lagoon-stuarine region, São Paulo, Brazil. Parasites of the following taxonomic categories were found in the respective organs - gills: Monogenean helminths, Trichodinidae, Copepoda and Hirudinea; blood: Haemogregarina mugili Carini, 1932 (Apicomplexa) e Trypanosoma froesi Lima, 1976 (Sarcomastigophora) and liver: cysts of Phagicola sp. The average values of red blood cells count (RBC), hemoglobin rate (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) of male, female and indifferentiaed, were similar. However, the... |

This study involved 344 Mullets, Mugil platanus Günther, 1880, captured in the estuarine region of Cananeia, São Paulo, Brazil (25º00'S, 47º55'W). The following data were recorded for each fish: total weight, total length, haemoglobin ratio (Hb), haematocrit (Ht), erythrocyte count (Er), differential leucocyte count (lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, basophils and "other cells") and haematometric indices; MCV, MCH, and MCHC. The sex and stage of gonadal maturity (undifferentiated, juvenile, resting, maturing, mature, and spent) were determined by macroscopical inspection of the gonads. Parasitological inspections revealed the following infestations: Gills - Trichodinidae, Monogenea, Copepoda, and Hirudinea. Liver: cysts of Digenea. Intestine: Nematoda,... |

Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the gill arch surface from juveniles of Mugil platanus Günther, 1880 is similar to that reported for others euryhaline teleosts. Two filament rows (about 41-49 filament per row) extend posteriorly, and two rows of rakers (about 42-46 rakers per row) extended anteriorly from each arch. Respiratory lamellae protrude along both sides of each filament (37/mm), from the base to the apex. The distribution, sizes and structure of various surface cells were also described. Except for the respiratory lamellae, the surface of whole gill arch is covered by a mosaic of pavement cells, which measure about 6,94X4,61µm and exhibit concentrically arranged surface ridges. The anterior pharyngeal surfaces of the raker of the first... |
