Calculation of multivariate normal probabilities by simulation, with applications to maximum simulated likelihood estimation AgEcon
Cappellari, Lorenzo; Jenkins, Stephen P..
We discuss methods for calculating multivariate normal probabilities by simulation and two new Stata programs for this purpose: mdraws for deriving draws from the standard uniform density using either Halton or pseudorandom sequences, and an egen function, mvnp(), for calculating the probabilities themselves. Several illustrations show how the programs may be used for maximum simulated likelihood estimation.

Clean Technological Change in Developing-Country Industrial Clusters: Mexican Leather Tanning AgEcon
Blackman, Allen; Kildegaard, Arne.
In many developing country cities, clusters of small and medium enterprises create severe pollution problems. Because conventional regulatory approaches are typically ineffective in such situations, policy responses have increasingly focused on promoting voluntary clean technological change. Yet the data and analysis needed to guide such efforts are scarce. This paper uses original firm-level survey data on a cluster of small- and medium-scale leather tanneries in Leon, Guanajuato -Mexico's leather capital-to econometrically identify the factors that drive the adoption of two clean tanning technologies. Using a multivariate probit model to estimate a system of seemingly unrelated regressions, we find-in contrast to conventional wisdom-that neither firm...

Diversification of the marketing chains among organic producers AgEcon
Corsi, Alessandro; Borsotto, Patrizia; Borri, Ilaria; Strom, Steinar.
Diversification of consumers’ demand and environmental concerns are at the origin of a trend towards short marketing chains and towards direct links between consumers and farmers in developed countries. This paper explores farmers’ motivations for choosing these types of marketing chains and/or the “traditional” ones. To this purpose, a theoretical model of marketing chain choice is developed, and a multivariate probit model of organic farmers’ choice of the marketing chain is estimated from a unique data set of organic farms in an Italian region.

Do Caring Services Affect Off-Farm Work? Evidence from Italy AgEcon
Salvioni, Cristina; Sciulli, Dario; Parodi, Giuliana.
The article investigates the determinants of the off-farm work decision in Italian farm households, highlighting the role of caring services. Assuming that the household simultaneously decides over the optimal allocation of time of each of its members, a multivariate probit model is used to estimate the off-farm participation equations and to control for possible correlation among them. Evidence of correlation between spouse and descendant equations are found. Results suggest that policy actions geared at encouraging the off-farm participation of farm household members ought to enhance the availability and accessibility of caring services and increase the level of education of household members.

Factors Affecting Farmers’ Utilization of Agricultural Risk Management Tools: The Case of Crop Insurance, Forward Contracting, and Spreading Sales AgEcon
Velandia, Margarita M.; Rejesus, Roderick M.; Knight, Thomas O.; Sherrick, Bruce J..
Factors affecting the adoption of crop insurance, forward contracting, and spreading sales are analyzed using multivariate and multinomial probit approaches that account for simultaneous adoption and/or correlation among the three risk management adoption decisions. Our empirical results suggest that the decision to adopt crop insurance, forward contracting, and/or spreading sales are correlated. Richer insights can be drawn from our multivariate and multinomial probit analysis than from separate, single-equation probit estimation that assumes independence of adoption decisions. Some factors significantly affecting the adoption of the risk management tools analyzed are proportion of owned acres, off-farm income, education, age, and level of business risks.

Factors Influencing the Adoption of Breeding Technologies in U.S. Hog Production AgEcon
Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Davis, Christopher G.; Rahelizatovo, Noro C..
An important aspect of structural change in the U.S. hog industry has been the adoption of breeding technology. The adoption of each of four breeding technologies, weekly farrowing, intensive breeding, terminal crossbreeding, and artificial insemination, in U.S. hog production is analyzed using multivariate probit analysis. Results suggest that diversification, whether the producer raised breeding stock, debt and asset levels, and producer’s education influence adoption rate. Larger, more risk-averse producers were more likely to adopt technology. Producers who rated the quality of labor available as higher were more likely to adopt management-intensive technologies.

Factors Influencing the Selection of Precision Farming Information Sources by Cotton Producers AgEcon
Jenkins, Amanda; Velandia, Margarita M.; Lambert, Dayton M.; Roberts, Roland K.; Larson, James A.; English, Burton C.; Martin, Steven W..
Precision farming information demanded by cotton producers is provided by various suppliers, including consultants, farm input dealerships, University Extension systems, and media sources. Factors associated with the decisions to select among information sources to search for precision farming information are analyzed using a multivariate probit regression accounting for correlation among the different selection decisions. Factors influencing these decisions are age, education, and income. These findings should be valuable to precision farming information providers who may be able to better meet their target clientele needs.

Pluriactivity Decisions by Farm Households in Italy AgEcon
Salvioni, Cristina; Sciulli, Dario; Parodi, Giuliana.
In this article we test whether in Italy the off-farm participation decisions of household members in working age are taken jointly and what are the variables that affect them. We find that the decisions of the operator, the spouse and the eldest child are not joint. Conversely, the participation decision of the operator and the spouse, that is of the two household's members belonging to the same generation, are found to be joint. The results suggest that policy actions for the purpose of encouraging off-farm participation rely on measures geared at improving the level of education and providing childcare services.

The Choice of Management Practices: What Determines the Design of an Environmental Management System? AgEcon
Anton, Wilma Rose Q..
This paper examines whether differential incentives exist in the adoption of environmental management practices (EMPs) with varying features that often make up the design of environmental management systems implemented by firms. Estimation of multivariate probit models reveals that greater consumer, regulatory and investor pressures are positively related to the adoption of EMPs that directly enhance a firm's green image. In addition, potential liability costs are positively associated with adopting broad-based EMPs while regulatory pressures are not generally found to have any significant relationship with environmental efforts that improve and address compliance issues. Results also reveal that competitive pressures arising from environmental efforts by...
