Assembly rules in Muscid Fly assemblages in the grasslands Biome of Southern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Krüger,Rodrigo F; Carvalho,Claudio J B de; Ribeiro,Paulo B.
The distribution of muscid species (Diptera) in grasslands fragments of southern Brazil was assessed using null models according to three assembly rules: (a) negatively-associated distributions; (b) guild proportionality; and (c) constant body-size ratios. We built presence/absence matrices and calculated the C-score index to test negatively-associated distributions and guild proportionality based on the following algorithms: total number of fixed lines (F L), total number of fi xed columns (F C), and the effect of the average size of the populations along lines (W) for 5000 randomizations. We used null models to generate random communities that were not structured by competition and evaluated the patterns generated using three models: general, trophic...

Cyrtoneurina pararescita (Diptera: Muscidae) (Couri, 1995) como novo hospedeiro de Nasonia vitripennis (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Marchiori,C.H.; Borges,L.M.F.; Ferreira,L.L..
This study reports the occurrence of Nasonia vitripennis (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) as parasitoid of Cyrtoneurina pararescita (Diptera: Muscidae) (Couri, 1995) in bovine feces obtained in Goiânia, Goiás state, Brazil. Bovine manure samples, collected at two weeks intervals, were taken to the laboratory and the pupae were extracted by water flotation. Each pupa was placed in capsules of gelatin until the emergence of dipterous or their parasitoids. The parasitism percentage was of 2.4%. This paper reports the first occurrence of N. vitripennis as parasitoid of C. pararescita worldwide.

Desenvolvimento de Ophyra albuquerquei Lopes (Diptera, Muscidae) em condições de laboratório Rev. Bras. entomol.
Krüger,Rodrigo Ferreira; Ribeiro,Paulo Bretanha; Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de.
Ophyra albuquerquei may often be a potential predator of Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758 in poultry and pig houses in southern Brazil. Here we address the developmental period of immatures stages and their viability. To obtain eggs, larvae and pupae, a colony was established in the laboratory. Adult flies were fed on a diet comprising two parts dry milk, two parts sugar and one part fish flour. Larval diet comprised one part fish flour and one part sawdust and water. The eggs, larvae and pupae were incubated at 26º ± 1ºC, 75% ± 10% R.H. and 12 h photoperiod. The egg to adult cycle took 573 h with a total viability of 64%. The shortest of the stages was the egg stage, which lasted about 20 h. The larval stage had the lowest viability (about 82%) and longest...

Diptera hosts of Stylogaster Macquart (Diptera, Conopidae) from Madagascar and South Africa Rev. Bras. entomol.
Couri,Márcia Souto; Barros,Gabriel Pinto da Silva.
The genus Stylogaster Macquart (Diptera, Conopidae) is represented by 14 species in the Afrotropical region, five of them endemic to Madagascar and two recorded from South Africa, one of them endemic. Fifteen specimens of Muscidae, 14 from Madagascar and one from South Africa, belonging to 10 species, impaled with Stylogaster eggs were examined. Among them, three new muscid host species were found. The dissected eggs were all similar, suggesting the presence of the same species in both localities, what is not recorded until now. The available data on the dipteran Stylogaster eggs hosts in Africa is summarized. Color photos of the material examined are presented.

Dípteros caliptrados (Muscidae e Anthomyiidae) da região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, RJ: II. Atratividade e freqüência sazonal Zoologia
d'Almeida,José Mario.
Nine thousand, six hundred and ninety-one flies of the family Muscidae (47 species) and Anthomyiidae (2 species) were captured. Flies were collected in three ecologically distinct areas (urban, rural and forest) within the metropolitan region of the city of Rio de Janeiro using as baits decomposing fish, bovine liver, fresh human faeces and mashed banana with sugar. Fish attracted the highest number of flies all over the year. Large number of flies were always collected in the summer and spring but reduced in the winter. Among several species of flies, Atherigona orientalis Schiner, 1868, Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758 and Synthesiomya nudiseta (Wulp, 1883) were always frequent.

Foraging by Polybia (Trichothorax) ignobilis (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) on flies at animal carcasses Rev. Bras. entomol.
Gomes,Leonardo; Gomes,Guilherme; Oliveira,Helena G.; Morlin Junior,José J.; Desuó,Ivan C.; Silva,Iracema M. da; Shima,Sulene N.; Von Zuben,Cláudio J..
Proteins for brood nutrition of social wasps are obtained from many prey, including insects (even bees and other wasps), spiders and bits of decaying meat. After being captured and killed, prey are reduced to a shapeless mass and distributed to the brood. Little is known about the foraging activity, especially on this group. Herein we describe the sequence of foraging behaviours of the social wasp Polybia (Trichothorax) ignobilis for hunting flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae and Muscidae) over pig carcasses. To our knowledge, there are few scientific descriptions of prey foraging behaviour on this species.

Houseflies speaking for the conservation of natural areas: a broad sampling of Muscidae (Diptera) on coastal plains of the Pampa biome, Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Zafalon-Silva,Ândrio; Kirst,Frederico Dutra; Krüger,Rodrigo Ferreira.
ABSTRACT The Brazilian Coastal Plain of the Pampa Biome (CPPB), has suffered fragmentation caused by resource extraction and cattle raising. In turn, conservation proposals are needed to prevent the anthropisation of Pampa natural areas. The first step towards conservation proposals by using insects is fauna inventories, providing data support for legislators. Thus, we undertook a regional and broad-scale sampling survey to investigate the diversity of Muscidae flies in protected and non-protected areas of CPPB. In addition, we carried out an ecological guild diversity analysis as a metric approach of bioindication. The Muscidae sampling resulted in 6314 specimens, 98 species taxa in 31 genera. Based on diversity estimators, our sampling represents 70-86%...

Influence of diets on the rearing of predatory flies of housefly larvae Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Simon,P.P.; Krüger,R.F.; Ribeiro,P.B..
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the survival, development time and morphological measures of immature Ophyra aenescens and Ophyra albuquerquei on different diets. Different proportions of protein and carbohydrates were offered for each species in 10 vials containing 30 eggs each. The vials were placed in a germination chamber at 30°C, relative humidity above 75% and photoperiod of 12 hours. Every day a vial was removed and mortality was evaluated and on the tenth day the length of the cephalic-pharyngeal skeleton (EC) and body size (G) of larvae that survived were evaluated. Survival was higher in diets with more protein (P<0.001). Between the species, mortality was more pronounced in O. albuquerquei in all diets (P<0.001). The EC...

Micropotamia, gen.n. of neotropical muscidae (Diptera, Azeliinae), with comments on allied azeliini genera Zoologia
Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de.
A new genus, Micropotamia, is erected for Phaonia minuscula Albuquerque, 1955 [type-species of the genus], Phaonia cilitibia Albuquerque, 1955 and Azelia amazonica Albuquerque & Lopes, 1982. A key to these three species is given. The female of Micropotamia amazonica is described for the first time, from Roraima. Some character-states of phylogenetic importance and affinities with world Azeliini genera are discussed. Megophyra Emden, 1965 and Potamia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 are considered to be most closely related to Micropotamia, gen.n.

Morphology of the quitinized structures related to the spermatheca of Muscidae (Insecta, Diptera) Zoologia
Couri,Márcia Souto.
Little is known about the morphology of the quitinized structures related to the spermatheca of Muscidae (Diptera). Most papers illustrate only the spermatheca, which shape has little systematic significance when analyzed as a separate character. The analysis of these structures in 16 Muscidae species, made it possible to clarify and understand some characters, which can be used in further phylogenetic analysis. The species selected to this study belong to different sub-families: Muscinae, Muscini: Biopyrellia bipuncta (Wiedemann, 1830); Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758; Azeliinae, Reinwardtini: Philornis univitattus Dodge, 1968; Cyrtoneurininae: Charadrella malacophaga Lopes, 1938; Cyrtoneurina polystigma (Wulp, 1896); Neomuscina neosimilis Snyder, 1949;...
