A Biceps Muscle Latissimus dorsi in a Dog International Journal of Morphology
Gil,Julio; Olivares,Ricardo.
This article reports the finding of a twin unreported muscle begin. In one dog, both, left and right muscle latissimus dorsi were biceps. The thin second head of m. latissimus dorsi that we founded, could be an intermediate step of comparative anatomy changes from reptilian to mammal. Man breast surgery and cardiomyoplasty, use dog latissimus dorsi as experimental, to know this information can be useful to these situations.

A practical approach to assess leg muscle oxygenation during ramp-incremental cycle ergometry in heart failure BJMBR
Barroco,A.C.; Sperandio,P.A.; Reis,M.; Almeida,D.R.; Neder,J.A..
Heart failure is characterized by the inability of the cardiovascular system to maintain oxygen (O2) delivery (i.e., muscle blood flow in non-hypoxemic patients) to meet O2 demands. The resulting increase in fractional O2 extraction can be non-invasively tracked by deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration (deoxi-Hb) as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). We aimed to establish a simplified approach to extract deoxi-Hb-based indices of impaired muscle O2 delivery during rapidly-incrementing exercise in heart failure. We continuously probed the right vastus lateralis muscle with continuous-wave NIRS during a ramp-incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test in 10 patients (left ventricular ejection fraction <35%) and 10 age-matched healthy males....

Alterations in muscular enzymes of horses competing long-distance endurance rides under tropical climate Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Teixeira-Neto,A.R.; Ferraz,G. C.; Moscardini,A. R. C.; Balsamão,G. M.; Souza,J. C. F.; Queiroz-Neto,A..
This study tried to monitor the alterations of muscle enzymes activity - creatinokinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) - in a group of horses that participated of 70 and 100km distance rides in five competitions of an annual endurance championship under tropical climate. Pre ride levels (U/l) were 245.13±9.84 for CK, 496.61±14.76 for LDH, and 328.95±8.65 for AST. When compared to these levels, the results revealed a significant decrease in all enzymes activities in the first moment of the rides. Peak levels, significantly different, were reached, immediately after rides by CK (413.591±50.75); 24 hours post rides by LDH (628.61±33.30); and 48 hours after rides by AST (389.89±16.96). Monitoring of recovery period...

AMP-deaminase in elasmobranch fish: A comparative histochemical and enzymatic study ArchiMer
Thebault, Marie-t; Izem, Lahoucine; Leroy, Jean Paul; Gobin, Eric; Charrier, Gregory; Raffin, Jean-paul.
AMP-deaminase activity was measured in white muscle from a wide range of fish, including one cyclostome, 13 chondrosteans, and one teleost to elucidate the pattern of the AMP-deaminase activity in white muscle of fish. Compared to a mammalian (rat) muscle extract, low enzyme activities are found in the cyclostome and two elasmobranchs from two families (Scyliorhinidae, Hexanchidae). In contrast, higher AMP-deaminase activities, similar to mammals, are expressed in Squalidae, all families of skates, Chimaeridae and in the teleostean fish. We then compared AMP-deaminase activities in red and white muscles from two representative elasmobranch fish, the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) and the thornback ray (Raja clavata). The fibre type composition and...

Anatomical Study on the Psoas Minor Muscle in Human Fetuses International Journal of Morphology
Guerra,Danilo Ribeiro; Reis,Francisco Prado; Bastos,Afrânio de Andrade; Brito,Ciro José; Silva,Roberto Jerônimo dos Santos; Aragão,José Aderval.
The anatomy of the psoas minor muscle in human beings has frequently been correlated with ethnic and racial characteristics. The present study had the aim of investigating the anatomy of the psoas minor, by observing its occurrence, distal insertion points, relationship with the psoas major muscle and the relationship between its tendon and muscle portions. Twenty-two human fetuses were used (eleven of each gender), fixed in 10% formol solution that had been perfused through the umbilical artery. The psoas minor muscle was found in eight male fetuses: seven bilaterally and one unilaterally, in the right hemicorpus. Five female fetuses presented the psoas minor muscle: three bilaterally and two unilaterally, one in the right and one in the left hemicorpus....

Biceps Brachii Muscle Innervation Zone Location in Healthy Subjects Using High-Density Surface Electromyography International Journal of Morphology
Guzmán,Rodrigo A; Silvestre,Rony A; Arriagada,David A.
Among the sequelae of central nervous system injury is spasticity which is difficult to manage in rehabilitation. Current treatments consider the administration of the botulinum toxin. However, results have proved highly variable in terms of effectiveness, attributable to the distance between the injection site and the innervations-zone (IZ). High Density sEMG (HDsEMG) has been used to gather information about muscle physiology and for location of the IZ. The aim of this study was to characterize the IZ of the biceps brachii muscle in healthy subjects during isometric contraction. We assessed the biceps brachii muscle of twenty healthy subjects (n=20) using a 64 surface electrodes matrix. The average location of the IZ was 34% distal to the line between...

Garcia,Daniela Aparecida; Benedito,Evanilde; Takeda,Alice Michiyo.
This study analyzed the muscle energy content (caloric density) of L. platymetopon captured at different sites of the Upper Paraná River floodplain, and potential relationships between the content and various environmental variables (water temperature, oxygen dissolved in water, food availability, relative numeric abundance) and biological variables (body size and reproductive cycle). Quarterly samplings from September 2006 to June 2007 in the lakes and rivers resulted in a sample of 739 specimens, whose muscle caloric density was determined using a calorimeter. Differences between the caloric averages of the males and females and among the different stages of gonadal development were not significant. Caloric density varied over time and space, with two...

Desmin: molecular interactions and putative functions of the muscle intermediate filament protein BJMBR
Costa,M.L.; Escaleira,R.; Cataldo,A.; Oliveira,F.; Mermelstein,C.S..
Desmin is the intermediate filament (IF) protein occurring exclusively in muscle and endothelial cells. There are other IF proteins in muscle such as nestin, peripherin, and vimentin, besides the ubiquitous lamins, but they are not unique to muscle. Desmin was purified in 1977, the desmin gene was characterized in 1989, and knock-out animals were generated in 1996. Several isoforms have been described. Desmin IFs are present throughout smooth, cardiac and skeletal muscle cells, but can be more concentrated in some particular structures, such as dense bodies, around the nuclei, around the Z-line or in costameres. Desmin is up-regulated in muscle-derived cellular adaptations, including conductive fibers in the heart, electric organs, some myopathies, and...

Differential growth retardation and Myofibrillar fragmentation in rats submitted to feed restriction and realimentation Scientia Agricola
Leonardo,Eric Franchi; Delgado,Eduardo Francisquine; Bagaldo,Adriana Regina; Lanna,Dante Pazzanese Duarte; Paz,Claudia Cristina Paro de.
Feed regimens alter muscle growth rate, hence they might impact the proteolytic system involved in tenderization during meat conditioning. The aim of this project was to verify the effects of feed restriction regimens on muscular and animal growth and their impact on postmortem myofibrillar fragmentation. The regimens were: 1) Feeding ad libitum for 11 d (Al/2); 2) Feed restriction (60% of Net Energy for maintenance - NEm) for 11 d (Rt/2); 3) Ad libitum for 22 d (Al); 4) Ad libitum for 4 d and feed restriction (60% NEm) for 18 d (Rt); 5) Ad libitum for 19 d and 3 d of fast (Ft); 6) Feed restriction (60% NEm) for 11 d and ad libitum until 22 d (Ral). The regimens Al/2 and Rt/2 had different intestine weights (19.3 ± 1.1 and 15.8 ± 1.9 g, respectively; P...

Abstract. Background:Beef tenderness is a complex trait of economic importance for the beef industry. Understanding the epigenetic mechanisms underlying this trait may help improve the accuracy of breeding programs. However, little is known about epigenetic effects on Bos taurus muscle and their implications in tenderness, and no studies have been conducted in Bos indicus. Results:Comparing methylation profile of Bos indicus skeletal muscle with contrasting beef tenderness at 14 days after slaughter, we identified differentially methylated cytosines and regions associated with this trait. Interestingly, muscle that became tender beef had higher levels of hypermethylation compared to the tough group. Enrichment analysis of predicted target genes suggested...

Effect of Breed and Caponisation on the Growth Performance, Carcass Composition, and Fatty Acid Profile in the Muscles of Greenleg Partridge and Polbar Breeds Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Kwiecień,M; Kasperek,K; Tomaszewska,E; Muszyński,S; Jeżewska-Witkowska,G; Winiarska-Mieczan,A; Grela,ER; Kamińska,E.
ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to determine the impact of caponisation of Polbar (Pb) and Greenleg Partridge (Zk) breeds on the production performance, carcass composition, and the nutrient content and fatty acid profile in the breast and thigh muscles and abdominal fat. From 18 weeks of age to the end of the experiment, the Zk capons were significantly heavier than the cocks. The Zk capons had higher (p≤0.05) weight and share of breast and leg muscles. At 24 weeks of age, we noted an increase in the total content of n-3 PUFA and linolenic acid C18:3 in the breast muscles of the Zk and Pb capons. The content of PUFA and n-3 PUFA in thigh muscles and the n6/n3 ratio were reduced in the Pb capons at 24 weeks of age, compared with the Zk cocks....

Effect of reproduction on escape responses, metabolic rates and muscle mitochondrial properties in the scallop Placopecten magellanicus ArchiMer
Kraffe, E; Tremblay, R; Belvin, S; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Marty, Y; Guderley, H.
In scallops, gametogenesis and spawning can diminish the metabolic capacities of the adductor muscle and reduce escape response performance. To evaluate potential mechanisms underlying this compromise between reproductive investment and escape response, we examined the impact of reproductive stage (pre-spawned, spawned and reproductive quiescent) of the giant scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, on behavioural (i.e., escape responses), physiological (i.e., standard metabolic rates and metabolic rates after complete fatigue) and mitochondrial capacities (i.e., oxidative rates) and composition. Escape responses changed markedly with reproductive investment, with spawned scallops making fewer claps and having shorter responses than pre-spawned or...
