To analyze the effects of concurrent training (CT) on the muscle fibers of Wistar rats submitted to standard and hypercaloric diets. In total, 40 rats were used, divided into 4 groups: Sedentary Group (GS); Exercise Group (GE), Obese Sedentary Group (OS) and Obese Exercise Group (OE). The animals performed a CT protocol consisting of: muscle strength training and aerobic training, carried out 3 times a week for 45 days. The smallest diameter of muscle fibers (MDF) was analyzed to evaluate muscle hypertrophy. It was observed that the OE group presented a significant decrease in MDF, compared to the OS group (OE=77.41 µm vs. OS=98.58 µm). In addition, the animals that performed CT demonstrated muscle hypertrophy (GE=74.39 µm vs. GS=72.13 µm). In conclusion,... |

Physical exercise is a known preventive and therapeutic alternative for several cerebrovascular diseases. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the motor performance and histomorphometry of the biceps brachii, soleus, and tibialis anterior muscles of rats submitted to a treadmill training program prior to the induction of cerebral ischemia via occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (OMCA). A total of 24 Wistar rats were distributed into four groups: Sham-Sed: sedentary control animals (n=6), who underwent sham surgery (in which OMCA did not occur); Sham+Ex: control animals exercised before the sham surgery (n=6); I-Sed: sedentary animals with cerebral ischemia (n=6); and I+Ex: animals exercised before the induction of ischemia... |

A comparative study on the pre-branchial cranial anatomy of the scalloped hammerhead sharks [Sphyrna lewini (Griffith & Smith, 1834)] and the Brazilian sharpnose shark [Rhizoprionodon lalandii (Valenciennes, 1839)] was carried out to check the modification in the musculature, inervation and optic stalk related to the appearance of the cephalofoil in Sphyrna Rafinesque, 1810. A total of seven adults and one juvenile of R. lalandii and eight juveniles of S. lewini were examined. In S. lewini the levator palaliquadrati and the levator labii superioris were the most modified cephalic muscles, as they became dorsalventrally attached and laterally developed. Among the oculomotor muscles, the recti followed the lateral expansion of the head constituting... |

The Abductor digiti minimi muscle, and the other hypotenar muscles, frequently presents anatomical variations. According to literature, this muscle can be composed by one, two or three muscular beams, as well as it can present accessory muscular beams. In dissecations of 40 formolized hands, we objectified to study the morphology and variations of the Abductor digiti minimi muscle. The muscle presented two muscular beams in 82,5 %, three beams in 15% and only 1 beam in 2,5 % of the cases. In none of cases accessory muscular beams were observed. When compared with literature, are observed statistics difference in some studied aspects. The results found in the research allow to affirm that the Abductor digiti minimi muscle is formed by two muscular beams in... |

It is reported the parasitization of Kudoa sp. (Myxozoa, Multivalvulida) within the somatic muscles of the fish Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835), Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823) and Mugil liza Valenciennes, 1836, captured off Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Other species of fish caught at the same place were not infected. The parasites formed elongated plasmodia inside the muscle fibres. Myoliquefaction or any host tissue reaction were not observed. The morphological and morphometric features of the spores are described, the parasites are compared with other Kudoa species, and the importance of the infection is discussed. |

We intended to present a portable document format (PDF) file containing stereoscopic surface models of the foot. While other surface models are subjectively drawn based on anatomical knowledge, our models are reconstructed from high quality sectioned images. Unlike other models, ours in the complimentary PDF file can also be saved on individual user computers to be manipulated off-line. The skin, 27 bones, 24 muscles, and 19 ligaments in the foot were delineated on a male cadaver's sectioned images from the Visible Korean project. After stacking the outlines of the structures, other than those of the ligaments, surface reconstruction was performed. The resultant surface models were placed in a PDF file, in which the models could be superimposed on either... |

The aim of this study was to define the morpho-functional variables that best predict the explosive power of the lower extremities of basketball players of Kosova. On 113 basketball players average aged 21.3 years old, 15 morpho-functional variables were measured: Stature, Body Weight, Humeral Perimeter, Chest Perimeter, Abdominal Perimeter, Thigh Perimeter, Calf Perimeter, Triceps Skinfold, Subscapular Skinfold, Abdominal Skinfold, Thigh Skinfold, Calf Skinfold, Heart Rate, VO2max.rel., and Explosive Power that was tested through Margaria-Kalamen Test. All tested basketball players are competitors in the Super League of Kosova. Linear regression of the data indicates that the system of 13 morpho-functional predictive variables explains 62.5% of total... |

This study describes the variations in total lipid, lipid classes and fatty acids in the midgut gland (MG), ovary, and muscle tissue of wild-caught Macrobrachium rosenbergii to elucidate the importance of these components during sexual maturation. Mature females were captured in the Mae Klong River, Thailand, from July to September 1998, and divided into five groups according to their ovarian development. Total lipid levels in the ovary increased with maturation, but no concomitant decrease in MG lipids was observed. Thus, the lipid requirements of the developing ovary are thought to be more dependent on the immediate ingestion of dietary lipid than on MG reserves. Higher proportions of neutral lipids (NL), mainly triacylglycerols (TG),... |
