Decomposition of Organic Substrates and their Effect on Mungbean Growth in Two Soils of the Mekong Delta JARTS
Becker, Mathias; Asch, Folkard; Chiem, Nguyen Huu; Ni, D. V.; Saleh, E.; Tanh, K. V.; Tinh, T. K..
Agricultural land use in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam is dominated by intensive irrigated rice cropping systems on both alluvial and acid sulfate soils. A stagnating and occasionally declining productivity may be linked on the alluvial soils to low N use efficiency and low soil organic matter content while on acid sulfate soils to acidity, Al toxicity and P deficiency. For economic reasons, farmers increasingly diversify their cropping system by replacing the dry season rice by high-value horticultural crops grown under upland conditions. However, upland cropping is likely to further exacerbate the soil-related problems. Organic substrates from decentralized waste and waste water management are widely available and may help to alleviate the reported soil...

Suitability of peanut residue as a nitrogen source for a rye cover crop Scientia Agricola
Balkcom,Kipling Shane; Wood,Charles Wesley; Adams,James Fredrick; Meso,Bernard.
Leguminous winter cover crops have been utilized in conservation systems to partially meet nitrogen (N) requirements of succeeding summer cash crops, but the potential of summer legumes to reduce N requirements of a winter annual grass, used as a cover crop, has not been extensively examined. This study assessed the N contribution of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) residues to a subsequent rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop grown in a conservation system on a Dothan sandy loam (fine-loamy, kaolinitic, thermic Plinthic Kandiudults) at Headland, AL USA during the 2003-2005 growing seasons. Treatments were arranged in a split plot design, with main plots of peanut residue retained or removed from the soil surface, and subplots as N application rates (0, 34, 67...

The bacterial community structure in an alkaline saline soil spiked with anthracene Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Castro-Silva,Carolina; Ruíz-Valdiviezo,Víctor M; Valenzuela-Encinas,César; Alcántara-Hernández,Rocio J; Navarro-Noya,Yendi E; Vázquez-Núñez,Edgar; Luna-Guido,Marco; Marsch,Rodolfo; Dendooven,Luc.
Background: The application of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) will affect the bacterial community structure as some groups will be favoured and others not. An alkaline saline soil with electrolytic conductivity (EC) 56 dS m-1 was spiked with anthracene and acetone while their effect on bacterial community structure was investigated. Results: The percentages of Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria decreased over time, while the percentage of Proteobacteria, mostly Xanthomonadales, increased. The percentage of the phylotypes belonging to the Nocardioides, Rhodococcus and Streptomyces, known degraders of PAHs, was larger in the anthracene-amended soil than in the acetone-amended and unamended soil at day 14. The phylotypes belonging to the genera...

UREASE ACTIVITY AND NITROGEN MINERALIZATION KINETICS AS AFFECTED BY TEMPERATURE AND UREA INPUT RATE IN SOUTHERN CHILEAN ANDISOLS R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Cartes,Paula; Jara,Alejandra A; Demanet,Rolando; Mora,María de la Luz.
Incubation studies were carried out to evaluate the effect of temperature and urea supply level on both the urease activity and the kinetics of N mineralization in two Andisols of Southern Chile. Our results showed that urease activity was higher in Piedras Negras soil (PNS) than Freiré soil (FS) at 24 and 48 h, and the enzyme was activated when the temperature increased from 5 to 21 °C. Urease activity followed a simple Michaelis-Menten kinetics. In PNS, the Michaelis Menten constant (Km) decreased, whereas the maximum enzyme reaction velocity (Vmax) and the catalytic efficiency increased when the temperature was raised up to 21 °C at 24 and 48 h of soil incubation. In FS, urease activity was the highest at 24 h, and it decreased at 48 h as a consequence...
