A preliminary geologic map of the Quaternary deposits, situated at the Southern half of the State of Espirito Santo coastal plain, is presented in this paper. They are represented by two generations of wave-built terraces, which have been originated after 123,000 years and 5,100 years B.P., by paleolagoonal deposits related to the last high sea-level period and by alluvial, coastal marsh and mangrove deposits of Holocene age. The evolutionary model valid for this sector of coast is quite similar to that previously established for other sectors of the Brazilian coast. (Résumé d'auteur) |

Observations of currents, transport, sea level, and sea level slope in Lombok Strait and west Flores in 1985 and 1986 have been compared to a simulation of the NORDA global ocean model in the indonesian throughflow region. Despite the relatively coarse grid scale of the model compared to topographic lengh scales in the region, the model appears to be realistically reproducing many of the observed features. The predicted transport through the Lombok Strait, for example, agrees with detailed observations of phase and magnitude, especially when corrected for grid size limitations. The sea surface fluctuations and sea surface slopes predicted by the model agree within less than a factor of 1.5. with sea level changes and slopes observed on tide gauges. There... |

An intensive survey of XBT and surface salinity sampling was carried out during september/october 1988 to compare surface dynamic heigh anomalies and altimetric anomalies along a line close to a GEOSAT satellite track in the Tropical Atlantic ocean, 15°N-18°S. Hydrography and altimetry agree within 4 cm rms, except in the Southern part of the section (South of 5°S). In the Northern hemisphere, the correlation between the two data sets is about 0.80 and the two power spectra present the same energy level .... The hydrographic data show an unusual tongue of fresh water around 7°N that results in positive dynamic height anomalies of about 10 dyn cm. The GEOSAT data analysed during the same period also show these anomalies with a similar scale. (D'après résumé... |
