In this paper we present for the first time detailed nutrient and oxygen figures for the Ionian Sea. The data were collected during cruises in March-April 1987 and August-September 1987, in the framework of the multi-nation research programme for the exploration of the Eastern Mediterranean, POEM. The oxygen and nutrient pattern is affected by the presence of mesoscale cyclonic and anticyclonic gyres in the area, the most interesting feature of which is the large anticyclonic flow region southwest of Peloponnesus (Pelops gyre). The chemical characteristics of the main water masses were also determined. In the deep layer of the stations near the Otranto Strait we have found, in winter, newly formed Adriatic Bottom Water (O2 : 5.3 ml/l). This water mass has... |

The evolution of nutrient distribution has been followed in spring on the Armorican shelf in association with hydrological features and phytoplankton development. Data were collected on a sampling grid of 20 stations on the continental shelf during four cruises (SATIR 8 to 11) between March and June 1982. Haline fronts (Ushant haline front, coastal haline front) were found in late winter and early spring; their outlines follow closely the outlines of the summer thermal fronts. The origin of these haline fronts comes mainly from the outflow towards the English Channel of the waters of the Loire river on the South Brittany shelf. At this time of the year, a conservative mixing is observed between offshore waters with relatively low nutrient concentrations... |

As part of the MAST I-FluxManche initiative, a monthly (September 1990 to November 1991) sampling programme has been carried out in the Dover Strait. Samples were taken (weather permitting) at two depths at each of six standard stations between Folkestone and Cap Gris-Nez. Data from all surveys, in conjunction with estimates of water movement derived from hydrodynamic numerical model, have been used to calculate fluxes of nutrients between the Channel and the North Sea. Results demonstrate that although nutrient concentrations are lower in the central channel-waters than in the coastal zone, the dissolved nutrient flux to the North Sea is mom important for stations of the central part of the Dover Strait as water. Current concern about possible increases... |

An analysis of tropical upwelling systems shows a great range in the rate of increase of the standing stock expressed in terms of the water column chlorophyll content. Grazing appears to be the main factor responsible for lowering the rate of increase, especially in moderate and strong High Nutrient-Low Chlorophyll (HNLC) waters. A simple model comparing Net Community Production (NCP) rates with observed chlorophyll increase rates, leads us to conclude that phytoplankton population must present high specific growth rates on a daily rhythm in order to overcome grazing. Maximum specific growth rates (V(max)) calculated for daily total production (TP) are, in the two main upwelling areas, 137 d-1 off NW Africa and 1.04 d-1 off Peru. For extreme HNLC... |

Recent measurements (1986-1988) of the distribution of the concentration of different nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and silicate) in the Dover Strait have been used, combined with older results, to calculate the total flux (dissolved and particulate) of nutrients into the North Sea. Special efforts are made to take into account in the fluxes the tidal, geographical and temporal variations in the concentrations of the different nutrients. No vertical gradients in the concentration of the different nutrients were found. Increased nutrient concentration was found in the coastal zones of England and France, compared to the Atlantic water in the central part of the Dover Strait The variation within a single year and between different years in the data... |

This study - carried out between the Elephant and the Orkney islands - showed that spatial variability in the marginal ice-edge zone (MIZ) was greater than that found in open sea. Salinity and silicate contents point to the existence of two fronts: the first - near Elephant Island - separates the Surface Antarctic Water coming from Drake Passage from the winter water originating in the Weddell Sea. This water is characterized by its high concentrations of nitrate (> 30 mu M) and silicates (> 80 mu M). The second front - near the South Orkney Islands undergoes the influence by a less saline water lens (< 34 %), poor in nutrients (N-NO3 < 24 mu M) and rich in chlorophyll (> 3.5 mg Chl a 1(-1)). Water masses circulation reveals the existence of... |
