Anti dermatophytic therapy: prospects for the discovery of new drugs from natural products BJM
Soares,Luciana Arantes; Sardi,Janaína de Cássia Orlandi; Gullo,Fernanda Patrícia; Pitangui,Nayla de Souza; Scorzoni,Liliana; Leite,Fernanda Sangalli; Giannini,Maria José Soares Mendes; Almeida,Ana Marisa Fusco.
Millions of people and animals suffer from superficial infections caused by a group of highly specialized filamentous fungi, the dermatophytes, which only infect keratinized structures. With the appearance of AIDS, the incidence of dermatophytosis has increased. Current drug therapy used for these infections is often toxic, long-term, and expensive and has limited effectiveness; therefore, the discovery of new anti dermatophytic compounds is a necessity. Natural products have been the most productive source for new drug development. This paper provides a brief review of the current literature regarding the presence of dermatophytes in immunocompromised patients, drug resistance to conventional treatments and new anti dermatophytic treatments.

Silva,Flávia dos Santos; Landell,Melissa Fontes; Paulino,Gustavo Vasconcelos Bastos; Coutinho,Henrique Douglas Melo; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino.
ABSTRACT Plants have been reported as used by local populations to treat various infections for a long time, which has directed several pharmacological studies. The main aim of this work was to evaluate three plant selection criteria with better predictive power to detect extracts with antifungal action: (1) medicinal plants that are not used for indications of infection and inflammation; (2) plants with direct citations for inflammation, except for infection; (3) plants with direct citations for inflammation and infection selected quantitatively by Syndromic Importance Value (SIV). We tested the action of 23 hydroethanolic extracts of plants against the fungi Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Cryptococcus gattii and found no differences in...

Anti-inflammatory activity of propolis extracts: a review J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
Almeida,E. C. de; Menezes,H..
Since primeval times, the inflammatory process has been described in many different ways. Several anti-inflammatory therapies have been used in different biological models. However, in a recent "back to nature move", modern man is searching for natural products with medicinal properties, particularly those obtained from plants and bees. Propolis has been used in folk medicine for a very long time. The many compounds present in propolis require investigation.Physical-chemical analysis studies have not sufficiently established quality standards of propolis containing products. These standards should depend especially on their different pharmacological activities. There are few studies reporting on the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of propolis...

Antinarelli,Luciana M.R.; Pinto,Nícolas C.; Scio,Elita; Coimbra,Elaine S..
Leishmaniasis is a complex of diseases caused by Leishmania protozoa which treatment is restricted to a limited number of drugs that exhibit high toxicity, collateral effects and are often costly. There are a variety of tropical plants distributed in Brazil, and for many poor people the therapy for several diseases is based mainly on the use of traditional herbal remedies. In this work, the cytotoxic activity of 17 plant methanol extracts was evaluated on several Leishmania species and murine macrophages. Among them, the extract of Casearia sylvestris, Piptocarpha macropoda, Trembleya parviflora, Samanea tubulosa and Plectranthus neochilus showed a promissing leishmanicidal activity, exhibiting IC50 values below of 20 µg/mL against at least one species of...

Deacylative alkylation (DaA) of N-methyl-3-acetyl-2-oxindole for the synthesis of symmetrically 3,3-disubstituted 2-oxindoles. An access gate to anticancer agents and natural products. Anais da ABC (AABC)
MORENO-CABRERIZO,CRISTINA; ORTEGA-MARTÍNEZ,AITOR; MOLINA,CYNTHIA; NÁJERA,CARMEN; SANSANO,JOSÉ M..
ABSTRACT The synthesis of 3,3-disubstituted N-methyloxindoles, starting from 3-acetyl-2-hydroxy-1-methyloxindole employing a sequential one-pot synthesis, is studied. The process involves a first alkylation in the presence of 1 equiv. of both organic halide and Triton B and the second one employs another 1.5 equiv. of each in moderate to high yields. This procedure is compared with the results obtained from the direct dialkylation of N-methyloxindole. The metathesis of one of the corresponding diallylated product was also studied obtaining the spiranic oxindole. All these methodologies are directed towards the access to anticancer agents and natural biologically active products.
