Determination of moisture content in lyophilized solids is fundamental to predict quality and stability of freeze-dried products, but conventional methods are time-consuming, invasive and destructive. The aim of this study was to develop and optimize a fast, inexpensive, noninvasive and nondestructive method for determination of moisture content in lyophilized mannitol, based on an NIR micro-spectrometer instead of a conventional NIR spectrometer. Measurements of lyophilized mannitol were performed through the bottom of rotating glass vials by means of a reflectance probe. The root mean standard error of prediction (RMSEP) and the correlation coefficient (R²pred), yielded by the pre-treatments and calibration method proposed, was 0.233% (w/w) and 0.994,... |

In the case of environmental samples, the use of a chemometrics-based prediction model is highly challenging because of the difficulty in experimentally creating a well-ranged reference sample set. In this study, we present a methodology using short wave infrared hyperspectral imaging to create a partial least squares regression model on a cored sediment sample. It was applied to a sediment core of the well-known Lake Bourget (Western Alps, France) to develop and validate a model for downcore high resolution LOI550 measurements used as a proxy of the organic matter. In lake and marine sediment, the organic matter content is widely used, for example, to reconstruct carbon flux variations through time. Organic matter analysis through routine analysis methods... |

Calycophyllum spruceanum (Benth) is a tree of the Amazon region popularly known as 'mulateiro', whose wood has multiple uses, from energy to folk medicine. Thus, it is extremely important to evaluate desirable characteristics, through quick methods that meet the principles of green chemistry. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of the near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy technique for the prediction of dry matter, carbon and ash contents and identification of parts of C. spruceanum trees. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression model applied within the spectral range of 400-2498 nm proved to be adequate to estimate the dry matter, carbon and ash contents in C. spruceanum sapwood and bark samples, with R2 above 0.90 in both calibration... |

The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of a long-term experiment on soil spectral properties and to develop prediction models of these properties (soil organic carbon (SOC), N, pH, Hh, P2O5, K2O, Ca, Mg, K, and Na content) from texturally homogeneous samples (loamy sand). To this aim, chemometric techniques, such as partial least square (PLS) regression and support vector machine (SVM) classification, were used. Our results show that visible and near infrared spectroscopy (VIS-NIRS) is suitable for the prediction of properties of texturally homogeneous samples. The effects of fertilizer applications were sufficient to modify the soil chemical composition to a range suitable for using VIS-NIRS for calibration and modeling purposes.... |
