Abstract Philornis larvae and pupae were collected in nestlings of Neothraupis fasciata (Lichtenstein), the White-banded Tanager (Passeriformes, Thraupidae), in three breeding seasons, between October and November 2003-2005 in a reserve in central Brazil. Here, we present biological data, diagnosis to the recognition of the species and a key to the segregation of species occurring in the Cerrado. The larvae were intradermic in the nestlings and the pupae were collected in the nests after the birds have abandoned them. The immatures collected were taken to the laboratory and reared under laboratory conditions, until emergence. The species identified as Philornis torquans (Nielsen), is here firstly recorded from the Brazilian Cerrado, and firstly recorded... |

Abstract: We have identified specimens of the leafhopper Gypona cerea DeLong & Freytag (Cicadellidae: Iassinae: Gyponini) collected from a crop of dwarf cashew (Anacardium occidentale Linnaeus 1753) located in Canto do Buriti, Piauí, Northeastern Brazil. The damage caused to the crop included inflorescences covered with sticky exudates, presence of sooty mold, and yellowing and drying of new shoots and inflorescences. Such documentation serves as a warning about possible outbreaks of infestation in the region and the likelihood of its expansion to other cashew producing areas. |

Chaetanthera acheno-hirsuta (Tombesi) Arroyo, A.M.R. Davies & Till-Bottraud (Asteraceae: Mutisieae), previously known from the upper limits of the vegetation (>3900m) on the eastern side of the Andes in San Juan Province, Argentina, is cited for Chile from six collections made in the Andes of the III Region (Atacama Region) between 3500-4000 m. The new record for the flora of Chile is based on Chaetanthera pulvinata (Phil.) Hauman var. acheno-hirsuta Tombesi, here elevated to species. Chaetanthera acheno-hirsuta belongs to Chaetanthera subgenus Egania. Its closest relatives, based on morphological characteristics, are C. apiculata (J. Remy) Benth. & Hook.f. and C. acerosa (J. Remy) Benth. & Hook.f. It is distinguished from C.... |

Wolfniana viridis sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on specimens collected in the municipality of Ipixuna (along Liberdade and Gregório rivers), state of Amazonas, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from the type-species, W. limbatula (Osborn, 1926), by the color pattern which lacks conspicuous orange markings on head, pronotum, and forewing commissure; and aedeagal shaft with apex broadly expanded. Based on specimens of Rotigonalia concedula Melichar, 1926 and R. curvula Cavichioli, 2000, collected along with W. viridis, Rotigonalia Young, 1977 is firstly recorded from the state of Amazonas and R. concedula is firstly recorded from Brazil. |

Testudinaria Taczanowski, 1879 includes nine valid species; only four of these species have both sexes described. In this paper we describe the female of T. gravatai Levi, 2005, which can be recognized specially by the abdominal pattern of spots. Testudinaria gravatai Levi, 2005 is similar to T. quadripunctata Taczanowski, 1879, but can be distinguished from that species by the presence of a single median excavation on the upper margin of the epigynal atrium; by copulatory duct almost straight in the basal portion and narrower in the distal portion. We have based our description on a single available female, collected in Criciúma, Santa Catarina, Brazil, a new locality record for the species. |

Abstract: We here report for the first time on the presence of three species of the conopid genus Stylogaster Macquart (Diptera, Conopidae) in Ethiopia, viz. S. nitens Brunetti, S. westwoodi Smith and Stylogaster sp.. We further screened 908 muscid flies (Diptera, Muscidae) for the presence of impaled eggs of Stylogaster and recorded eggs on 89 individuals (9.8%). Eggs were impaled on eight species, viz. Limnophora translucida Stein, Musca lusoria Wiedemann, Musca splendens Pont, Neomyia chrysopyga (Emden), Pseudohelina nigritarsis (Jaennicke), Stomoxys omega Newstead, Stomoxys taeniatus Bigot and Stomoxys varipes (Bezzi). The maximum number of eggs found on a single muscid was six. We illustrated the dissected eggs. L. translucida, M. lusoria, M.... |

Species of the family Pilargidae are revised based on bibliographic information and on specimens collected in soft bottoms, from 16 to 68 m depth, in three localities of the northern Chilean coast. Five genera and six especies, including a new record for the Chilean fauna, Parandalia fauveli, are recognized. Synonyms, diagnostic features, geographic distribution data and illustrations are provided for each species. Abundance data and biomass, as well as granulometry and organic matter of the sediments where the specimens were collected, are also reported. Presence of Pilargis berkeleyae and Sigambra bassi in the collected material allows extension of their distributional ranges from approximately 35-36ºS to 18º30'S. A taxonomic key to the six species of... |
