A new species and records of Helochares (Insecta: Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) from Southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Clarkson,Bruno; Ferreira-Jr,Nelson.
A new species of Helochares Mulsant, 1844 (Hydrophilidae: Acidocerinae) from Brazil is described and illustrated. Helochares (s. str.) atlanticus sp. nov. is distinct mainly by characteristics of the aedeagus whose phalobase is short, narrowed on basal third; parameres are thick, constricted on apical quarter, with small tooth-like projection on outer margin near apex; dorsal lobe longer than ventral lobe, shorter than parameres, very wide at base, abruptly narrowing toward apex until about half of its length where it dilates and divides into two long and narrow projections apart from each other at base, but turned inward at apex; ventral lobe acuminate and symmetrical. The rounded emargination on anteromedial margin of labrum bearing small tooth-like...

Actiniaria from Ria de Arosa, Galicia, northwestern Spain, in the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity Naturalis, Leiden Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Ates, R.M.L..
Twentysix species of sea anemones (Actiniaria) collected in Galicia, northwestern Spain are present in the collection of the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity Naturalis. They are listed and discussed. The cnidom of seventeen species is surveyed. Diadumene cincta is not a recent immigrant in western Europe. Sagartia luciae is (re)assigned to the genus Diadumene. The presence of Sagartia troglodytes in the Mediterranean is doubtful at best.

This study provides a list of anurans occuring in Londrina Municipality, north of Paraná, and analyses the difference in species richness between one well preserved forest area (Parque Estadual Mata dos Godoy) and another, altered area (Estação de Piscicultura da Universidade Estadual de Londrina). The greatest number of species was in the preserved area (24 species) when compared to the altered one (14 species). The occurence of true forest species (stenoics), such Crossodactylus sp., Eleutherodactylus binotatus, E. guentheri, and Hyalinobatrachium uranoscopum, only in the Parque Estadual Mata dos Godoy shows the conservation leveis of áreas and put in evidence the anurans as biological indicators of environmental quality. Barn Owl pellets (Aves: Tyto furcata) reveal a higher mammalian richness in the Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lemos,Hudson de Macedo; Silva,Carina Azevedo Oliveira; Patiu,Fabio de Mello; Gonçalves,Pablo Rodrigues.
The northern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro harbors the largest coastal sandy plains (restingas) of southeastern Brazil, severely threatened due to recent human occupation. In this context, mammal inventories becomes urgent to support biodiversity conservation and management policies. This paper aims to update the knowledge on the mammalian species richness of Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park by analyzing pellets of the Barn owl Tyto furcata. The analyses of 4745 mammalian bone fragments (1739 individuals) revealed the occurrence of 17 species belonging to the orders Rodentia (9 spp.), Didelphimorphia (2 spp.) and Chiroptera (6 spp.). The rodents Mus musculus and Cerradomys goytaca accounted for 77.2% of the total individuals preyed, suggesting...

Bat fauna of the Cerrado savanna of eastern Maranhão, Brazil, with new species occurrences Biota Neotropica
Olímpio,Ana Priscila Medeiros; Ventura,Marcelo Cardoso da Silva; Mascarenhas,Márcia de Jesus Oliveira; Nascimento,Daiane Chaves do; Andrade,Fernanda Atanaena Gonçalves de; Fraga,Elmary da Costa; Barros,Maria Claudene.
Abstract In Brazil, 179 bat species have been recorded to date, representing 68 genera and nine families. Few data are available on the bat fauna of the state of Maranhão, so the present study was based on a survey of the bat fauna of the Inhamum Municipal Environmental Protection Area (APA Inhamum) in the Cerrado savanna of the eastern extreme of the state. This inventory provides new records of bat species for the state of Maranhão and the Cerrado biome. A total of 31 species (four families) were collected, representing 39% of the bat species known to occur in Maranhão and 28.71% of the species described for the Cerrado. The family Phyllostomidae was the most diverse, with 23 species (74.20% of the total), and also the most abundant, with 86.09% of the...

Bats (mammalia: chiroptera) from the caatinga scrublands of the crateus region, northeastern Brazil, with new records for the state of Ceará Mastozool. neotrop.
da Silva,Shirley S. P; Dias,Daniela; Martins,Mayara A; Guedes,Patrícia G; de Almeida,Juliana C; da Cruz,Alexandre P; Serra-Freire,Nicolau M; Damascena,Joyce dos S; Peracchi,Adriano L.
Whereas surveys of the bat fauna are available for some localities in the Brazilian Northeast, studies in the caatinga scrublands are still limited. The aim of this study was to survey the bat fauna in an area of caatinga scrublands in the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN Serra das Almas), which is located on the Ibiapaba Plateau, State of Ceará. The bat assemblage of the reserve was surveyed in July 2012 (rainy season), and January 2013 (dry season), with a total of 19 sampling nights. We captured 347 individuals of 23 species representing six families. The bat fauna was characterized by the predominance of a few abundant species, in particular phyllostomid frugivores, and many rare species, which is frequent in studies based on mist nets at ground...

Biodiversity of the Neotropical Larginae (Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoroidea: Largidae): Description of a new genus and new species Anais da ABC (AABC)
MELO,MARÍA CECILIA; DELLAPÉ,PABLO M..
Abstract: A new genus of Larginae (Largidae), Parvacinocoris, is described to include a new species from Argentina and Paraguay, and P. stehliki (Doesburg) new combination, a species previously placed in Acinocoris, previously known from Surinam and Venezuela and in this paper recorded also from Brazil, Colombia and Guatemala. This new genus is similar to Acinocoris however it may be separated by the smaller size, the shorter antennae, the immaculate abdominal sterna, the shape of the parameres, and the presence of a pair of hook‐like processes on the aedeagal conjunctiva. Photographs of dorsal and lateral habitus of both sexes as well as the male genitalia of the new species are included.

Butterfly fauna (Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea) in a heterogeneous area between two biodiversity hotspots in Minas Gerais, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Soldati,Déborah; Silveira,Fernando Amaral da; Silva,André Roberto Melo.
Abstract This paper investigates the butterfly fauna of the ‘Serra do Rola-Moça’ State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We evaluate i) the seasonal variation of species richness and composition; and ii) the variation in composition of the local butterfly assemblage among three sampling sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Sampling was carried out monthly between November 2012 and October 2013, using entomological nets. After a total sampling effort of 504 net hours, 311 species were recorded. One of them is endangered in Brazil, and eight are probable new species. Furthermore, two species were new records for the region and eight considered endemic of the Cerrado domain. There was no significant difference in species richness between the dry and the...
