Application of response surface methodology to study the biological removal of nitrogen from effluent of cattle slaughterhouse in a sequencing batch reactor 70
Lima,Adriana N. de; Gomes,Benedito M.; Gomes,Simone D.; Carvalho,Karina Q. de; Christ,Divair.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) on biological removal of nitrogen from cattle slaughterhouse wastewater by nitrification/denitrification processes. The effects of initial concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen were investigated at 100; 150 and 200 mg L-1 and air flow rate at 0.125; 0.375 and 0.625 L min¹ Lreactor-1 on the nitrogen compounds removal, by a Central Composite Rotational Design (CCRD) configuration. There were variations from 9.2 to 94.9%, 4.0 to 19.6% and 20.8 to 92.0% in the conversion of ammoniacal nitrogen to nitrate and nitrite concentration and removal of total nitrogen, respectively. The increase of air flow rate and decrease of the initial concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen...

COMPOSITION AND FUNCTION OF THE MICROBIAL COMMUNITY RELATED WITH THE NITROGEN CYCLING ON THE POTATO RHIZOSPHERE 37
FLÓREZ-ZAPATA,NATHALIA; GARCÍA,JUAN CARLOS; DEL PORTILLO,PATRICIA; RESTREPO,SILVIA; URIBE-VELEZ,DANIEL.
In the S. tuberosum group phureja crops, mineral fertilizer and organic amendments are applied to meet the plants´ nutritional demands, however the effect of such practices on the associated rizospheric microbial communities are still unknown. Nitrogen plays an important role in agricultural production, and a great diversity of microorganisms regulates its transformation in the soil, affecting its availability for the plant. The aim of this study was to assess the structure of microbial communities related with the N cycle of S. tuberosum group phureja rizospheric soil samples, with contrasting physical-chemical properties and fertilization strategy. Few significant differences between the community composition at the phylum level were found, only...

Cycle de l'azote à l' interface eau-sédiment dans le Bassin d'Arcachon : rôle des bactéries dans les processus de perte en azote (nitrification-dénitrification) 5
Riou, Stéphane Alain.
Bacterial nitrification and denitrification were studied in the sediments of the Bassin d'Arcachon, a macrotidallagoon located in the Southwestern Atlantic French coast colonized by extensive Zostera noltii  meadows. Nitrifiers were enumerated by MPN method. Densities were law : from 102 to 104 bacteria per ml of sediment presenting an increase during winter. Nitrifying activities were measured by NH4+  accumulation N-serve block technique. Activities were ranged from 0 to 90 µmol m-2 h-1 and nitrification represented 120-140 mmol m-2 yr-1 for intertidal sediments. The 15N  isotope pairing technique was applied to sediment samples from the whole bay for determining the denitrification rates. Average rates were 10-20 µmol m·2 h-1 with a maximum of 75 µmol...

EFFECT OF AERATION AND RECIRCULATION IN THE REMOVAL OF NITROGEN AND CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND FROM SANITARY SEWAGE IN A STRUCTURED BED REACTOR 70
Leick,Sheilla A.; Oliveira,João G B. De; Tavares,Karoline A.; Lopes,Deize D.; Barana,Ana C..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate a structured bed reactor with intermittent aeration in the simultaneous removal of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Nitrogen (TN) from sanitary sewage. The reactor was operated for 339 days with a Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) of 12 hours, temperature of 30 ± 1°C and continuous feeding. Nine trials were carried out in which three different effluent recirculation flow (Qr), 3, 2 and 1 time the incoming flow, were evaluated in three different aeration times, of 1h, 2h, and 3h, in 3 hour cycles. The results showed that different recirculation flows and aeration times did not influence the removal of COD, which reached 89%±12. It was observed that the efficiency of TN removal was higher in the tests with higher...

Effect of cycle time and airflow in biological nitrogen removal from poultry slaughterhouse wastewater using sequencing batch reactor 70
Lopes,Carla L.; Mees,Juliana B. R.; Sene,Luciane; Carvalho,Karina Q. de; Christ,Divair; Gomes,Simone D..
This study aimed to evaluate the influence of airflow (0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 L.L-1.min-1) and cycle time (10.45 h, 14.25 h and 17.35 h) on a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) performance in promoting nitrification and denitrification of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater. The operational stages included feeding, aerobic and anoxic reactions, sedimentation and discharge. SBR was operated in a laboratory scale with a working volume of 4 L, keeping 25% of biomass retained inside the reactor as inoculum for the next batch. In the anoxic stage, C: N ratio was maintained between 5 and 6 by adding cassava starch wastewater. A factorial design (22) with five repetitions was designed at the central point to evaluate the influence of cycle time and airflow on total...

Effect of particulate organic carbon on heterotrophic bacterial populations and nitrification efficiency in biological filters 5
Michaud, Luigi; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Bruni, V; Piedrahita, Raul.
Competition between heterotrophic and nitrifying bacteria is of major practical importance in aquaculture biofilter design and operation. This competition must be understood to minimize the negative impact of heterotrophic bacteria on an aquaculture system. On the other hand, the heterotrophic population is suspected of having a positive effect against pathogenic bacteria. Little information is available on the bacterial communities present within aquaculture systems, except for nitrifying bacteria, but a combination of traditional aquacultural engineering research methods and novel microbiological techniques offers new opportunities for the study of these communities. The heterotrophic bacterial population activity and the nitrification efficiency of a...

Effects of fire on soil nitrogen dynamics and microbial biomass in savannas of Central Brazil 86
Nardoto,Gabriela Bielefeld; Bustamante,Mercedes Maria da Cunha.
The objective of this work was to study the effects of fire on net N mineralization and soil microbial biomass in burned and unburned cerrado stricto sensu sites. The study was carried out from April 1998 to April 2000. The pH values were significantly higher in the burned site while soil moisture content was significantly higher in the unburned site (P<0.05). The soil C/N ratio was 22/1 and the available NO3-N ranged between 1.5 and 2.8 mg kg-¹ dry weight. However, the NH4-N concentration ranged between 3 and 34 mg kg-1 dry weight in the burned site and between 3 and 22 mg kg-1 dry weight in the unburned site. The NH4-N increased after fire, but no significant changes were observed for NO3-N (P<0.05). The NO3-N accumulation occurred in short periods...

Elevation and vegetation influences on soil properties in Chilean Nothofagus forests 97
DECKER,KELLY L.M; BOERNER,R.E.J.
We measured net nitrogen mineralization, net nitrification, proportional nitrification, and total inorganic nitrogen, available phosphorus, and soil organic carbon in five Andean forested stands in an attempt to resolve the relative influence of elevation and forest canopy composition on soil organic matter and nutrient dynamics in this ecosystem type. Our five forested study sites were within a contiguous Nothofagus forest that ranged from 1,280 to 1,700 m elevation in the central Chilean Andes. The five sites consisted of three single species stands, one each of the low elevation deciduous N. obliqua, the evergreen N. dombeyi, or the high elevation deciduous N. pumilio, as well as two mixed evergreen-deciduous stands. There was no statistically...

Emission of nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide from semi-arid tropical soils in Chiapas México 90
Ponce-Mendoza,Alejandro; Ceballos-Ramírez,Juan Manuel; Gutierrez-Micelli,Federico; Dendooven,Luc.
The semi-arid region of Chiapas is dominated by N2 -fixing shrubs, e.g., Acacia angustissima. Urea-fertilized soil samples under maize were collected from areas covered and uncovered by A. angustissima in different seasons and N2O and CO2 emissions were monitored. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of urea and of the rainy and dry season on gas emissions from semi-arid soil under laboratory conditions. Urea and soil use had no effect on CO2 production. Nitrons oxide emission from soil was three times higher in the dry than in the rainy season, while urea fertilization doubled emissions. Emissions were twice as high from soil sampled under A. angustissima canopy than from arable land, but 1.2 lower than from soil sampled outside the...

Evolution des caractéristiques chimiques et biologiques des sédiments en circuit clos. IV. Régulation du nitrite en présence de crevettes Penaeus japonicus 5
Mevel, Genevieve.
Prawns (Panaeus japonicus) were rearing during more than nine months in experimental closed circuit tanks. In such systems the nitrite appearance is related to the normal nitrification process and to oxygen deficiency. Above a given level, nitrite causes the death of prawns. The soluble oxygen concentration and, thus, nitrite level in the water appears as the main factor for a successful development of prawns in closed circuit tanks. In these conditions, the growth rate of the prawns is relatively low (9g/per individual in seven months). Never theless, such a system allows a load of some 600 g prawns per m2.

Greenhouse Gas (CO2 AND N2O) Emissions from Soils: A Review 117
Muñoz,Cristina; Paulino,Leandro; Monreal,Carlos; Zagal,Erick.
In agricultural activities, the main greenhouse gases (GHG) are those related to C and N global cycles. The impact of agriculture on GHG emissions has become a key issue, especially when considering that natural C and N cycles are influenced by agricultural development. This review focuses on CO2 and N2O soil emissions in terrestrial ecosystems, with emphasis in Chilean and similar agro-ecosystems around the world. The influence of land use and crop management practices on CO2 and N2O emissions is analyzed; some mitigation measures to reduce such emissions are also discussed here. More knowledge on the biological processes that promote of GHG emissions from soil will allow creating opportunities for agricultural development under friendly-environmental...

Influence of shellfish farming activities on nitrification, nitrate reduction to ammonium and denitrification at the water-sediment interface of the Thau lagoon, France 5
Gilbert, F; Souchu, Philippe; Bianchi, M; Bonin, P.
The seasonal patterns of nitrification, denitrification and dissimilatory ammonium production (DAP) rates were studied in the sediment of 2 stations in the Thau lagoon (south of France). The station ZA was located within the shellfish farming zone and the station B was the reference site. A marked effect of shellfish fanning on bacterial activities was observed. Spatial differences were associated with discrepancies in the organic content and the reduction state of sediments, i.e. highest reductive processes (denitrification and DAP) were noted in shellfish farming area, whereas the oxidative process (nitrification) was predominant outside the farming zone. At both stations, the DAP activity increased in September (autumn) concomitant with an increase of...

Metabolism of CO and CH sub(4) by nitrifiers and the determination of the nitrification rate. 5
Morita, R; Jones, R.
The nitrifying bacteria were found to survive 24 weeks in the absence of ammonium without decreasing their number of cell size. Because H sub(2), CO, and CH sub(4) are present in the marine environment, these substrates were investigated as a possible source of the energy of maintenance for the nitrifying bacteria. super(14)CO and super(14)CH sub(4) were found to be oxidized by the nitrifiers. N-serve was found to inhibit the oxidation of CO. Using the nitrifiers' ability to oxide CO, a method for the determination of the nitrification rate was developed. The ability of nitrifiers to oxidize CO may play a significant role in the cycling of CO sub(2) in the marine environment. Whether CO and CH sub(4) oxidation play a role in the survival of nitrifiers in...

Nitrification in hybrid reactor with a recycled plastic support material 52
Wolff,Delmira Beatriz; Ochoa,Juan Carlos; Paul,Etienne; Costa,Rejane Helena Ribeiro da.
This work investigated the nitrification in a hybrid moving bed pilot scale reactor, which used a low density recycled plastic support material for biomass growth. The filling rate was 20% of its working volume (22L). The feeding and recirculation outflow was 45L/day. The reactor operated at a temperature of 16ºC, in two phases, according to the sludge retention time (SRT): A phase was 10 days and B phase was 3 days (average values). The applied average volumetric nitrogen and organic loads were 0.16KgTKN/m3.day and 1kgCOD/m³.day, respectively. The results showed an average nitrogen removal of 95% and average COD removal of 89%, in both A and B phases. Nitrogen removal rates were independents of the SRT.

Performance of pilot-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands with and without the emergent macrophyte Spartina alterniflora treating mariculture effluent 52
Sousa,Wilson Treger Zydowicz; Panitz,Clarice Maria Neves; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela.
Vertical flow constructed wetlands, planted with and without Spartina alterniflora, were tested for the treatment of mariculture wastewater. Wetlands with and without the emergent macrophyte produced reductions of 89 and 71% for inorganic solids, 82 and 96% for organic solids, 51 and 63% for total nitrogen, 82 and 92% for ammoniacal nitrogen, 64 and 59% for orthophosphate, and 81 and 89% for turbidity, respectively. Wetlands with S. alterniflora showed denitrification tendencies, while wetlands without S. alterniflora had higher oxygen levels leading to nitrification. The results suggest the fundamental role of oxygen controlling the purification processes as well as the potential of constructed wetlands to treat mariculture effluents.

Phased oscillations in cell numbers and nitrate in batch cultures of Alexandrium tamarense (Dinophyceae) 5
Collos, Yves; Hadjadji, Imene; Plisson, Benoit; Cecchi, Philippe; Laabir, Mohamed; Bechemin, Christian; Masseret, Estelle.
Alexandrium tamarense (M. Lebour) Balech strains isolated in spring 2007 from a single bloom in Thau lagoon have been grown in nonaxenic artificial media. For three strains showing large oscillations in biomass (crashes followed by recoveries) on a scale of several days, a significant relationship was observed between changes in cell densities (as in vivo fluorescence) and changes in nitrate concentrations. Increases in cell densities were accompanied by decreases in nitrate, while decreases in cell densities corresponded to increases in nitrate, presumably due to nitrification. Net increases in nitrate could reach up to 15 mu mol N . L(-1) . d(-1) indicating a very active nitrifying archaeal/bacterial population. However, following population crashes,...

REMOVAL OF AMMONIACAL NITROGEN FROM MUNICIPAL LANDFILL LEACHATE WITH FLOATING Typha domingensis (TYPHACEAE) 37
Tamires PETRY,Camila; Trindade COSTA,Daiane; DROSTE,Annette.
ABSTRACT A promising method for the treatment of effluents is the use of floating macrophytes. Ammoniacal nitrogen is a typical compound present in urban landfill leachates and its removal is important due its toxicity to several organisms. Therefore, the study evaluated Typha domingensis survival and nitrification potential artificially floating in domestic solid waste leachate. Plants were exposed for 35 days to leachate (100, 75 and 50 %) and to rainwater with N:P:K (control). Dissolved oxygen (DO) of the treatments was periodically measured, and ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrite and nitrate were analyzed before and after exposure. At the end of the experiment, plant survival rate was calculated. After two weeks, DO increased twice in the control, three...

Root extracts of Bracchiaria humidicola andSaccharum spontaneum to increase N use by sugarcane 63
Kölln,Oriel Tiago; Franco,Henrique Coutinho Junqueira; Ferreira,Danilo Alves; Vargas,Vitor Paulo; Castro,Saulo Augusto de Quassi; Cantarella,Heitor; Caldana,Camila; Trivelin,Paulo Cesar Ocheuze.
ABSTRACT Retaining the mineral N in the form of NH4+ in the soil for a lengthy period is desirable for reducing losses. Furthermore, there is evidence that sugarcane prefers NH4+-N in place of NO3−-N. This study aimed firstly, to evaluate the potential of root extracts of Bracchiaria humidicola andSaccharum spontaneum, in contrast with the DCD (Dicyandiamide) inhibitor, to increase absorption of N by plants fertilized with ammonium sulfate, and secondly, to quantify the emission of N2O fluxes with the use of this inhibitor. The experiment was developed in a glasshouse in an entirely randomized design where four treatments were applied: AS) ammonium sulfate (control); AS+DCD) ammonium sulfate associated with dicyandiamide; AS+BCH) ammonium sulfate...

Soil nitrogen dynamics after Brachiaria desiccation 90
Castoldi,Gustavo; Reis,Jhônatas Gomes dos; Pivetta,Laércio Augusto; Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
Brachiaria species, particularly B. humidicola, can synthesize and release compounds from their roots that inhibit nitrification, which can lead to changes in soil nitrogen (N) dynamics, mainly in N-poor soils. This may be important in crop-livestock integration systems, where brachiarias are grown together with or in rotation with grain crops. The objective of the present study was to determine whether this holds true in N-rich environments and if other Brachiaria species have the same effect. The soil N dynamics were evaluated after the desiccation of the species B. brizantha, B. decumbens, B. humidicola, and B. ruziziensis, which are widely cultivated in Brazil. The plants were grown in pots with a dystroferric Red Latosol in a greenhouse. Sixty days...
