Increasing development of aquaculture business has thrown up new requirements in terms of prevention and control of mollusc diseases. In closed structures, one way to reduce infectious risk is to make use of anti-infectives . Specific drugs like antibiotics should be used only for therapeutic purpose against identified agents. Less specific anti-infectives like disinfectants could be employed for preventive and also for curative goals against causal pathogens and opportunist agents. A critical analysis synthesizes the bibliography available on disinfection in mollusc hatcheries and nurseries. Physical and chemical tools are reviewed then selected depending on four criteria: (1) efficiency against most important pathogens of molluscs, (2) safety for... |

ABSTRACT Twenty-one Clonostachys rosea strains, previously selected by its biocontrol activity higher than 80% against Fusarium circinatum, were evaluated for its ability to promote growth of Pinus radiata seedlings on natural substrate. Stem height, root length, dry weight of stem and roots, and ectomycorrhization were measured at 102 days after seeding. The results showed significant differences between some of the tested C. rosea strains when compared to the controls, showing increases for plant height of 25%, dry stem mass of 37%, root length of 13.5%, dry root mass of 20.5% and ectomycorrhization of 55% when compared to their respective controls, demonstrating a possible dual use of these strains for both plant protection and increased biomass of P.... |

Abstract The importance of mineral nutrition to the various plant species has been recognized for many years. Since nutrients are directly linked to physiological and metabolic processes, they promote the growth of rootstocks and seedlings, contributing to the formation of more productive orchards. As a consequence of the lack of technical information for most fruit trees, fertilization in nurseries has still been carried out empirically, sometimes underestimating or overestimating nutritional requirements and compromising the quality of plants produced. Given the importance of mineral nutrition in the formation of high-quality seedlings and the lack of scientific information on the topic, the aim of the present review was to raise interest in further... |

Solarization effects on soil temperature were evaluated during the autumn. The increase in soil temperature caused by the use of transparent polyethylene (PE) low tunnels over solarized nurseries, in subtropical central region of the Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, was also quantified. Treatments were: a) solarization with 100µ thickness PE (T1), b) solarization with 100µ thickness PE, covered with low tunnel (T2), c) solarization with 50µ thickness PE (T3), d) solarization with 50µ thickness PE, covered with low tunnel (T4), and e) bare soil (T). The low tunnel consisted of a 100µ thickness PE and measured 0.5m height in the center of the nursery. The results showed that additional use of low tunnels have increased, on the average, 5.0ºC over the maximum... |
