Análisis espacio-temporal del estado nutricional de larvas de anchoíta Engraulis anchoita. Relación con las características hidrográficas y la disponibilidad de alimento OceanDocs
Díaz, M.V..
Nutritional condition studies allow the assessment of physiological state of each larva and thus, the establishment of favourable nursery areas which provide better survival and growth. In the present work, morphometrical, histological and biochemical techniques were employed to assess nutritional condition of anchovy, Engraulis anchoita, larvae captured in the Argentine Sea. Its results were complemented with oceanographic data and information about zooplankton abundances, both prey and predators of anchovy larvae. Anchovy larvae abundance and distribution would be mainly determined by physico-chemical variables. Even though no significant differences were found in larval nutritional condition among the studied areas, larval condition was slightly better...

Andrade,Dulciene Karla Bezerra de; Véras,Antonia Sherlânea Chaves; Ferreira,Marcelo de Andrade; Santos,Mércia Virginia Ferreira dos; Melo,Wellington Samay de; Pereira,Kedes Paulo.
The body composition and net protein and energy requirements for weight gain of 5/8 Hostein-Zebu crossbred cattle raised in Brachiaria decumbens Spaft pasture were evaluated. In total, 16 bulls with 10 months of age and body weight (BW) of 180 ± 19.95 kg were used. The animals were kept with free access to pasture or with restricted grazing (from 6 to 10 h). Four animals were slaughtered at the beginning of the experimental period to estimate the empty body weight (EBW) and the initial body composition of the remaining animals. The other animals were slaughtered at the end of the 84-day trial period. The logarithm equations of the protein and energy body content were adjusted according to the logarithm of the empty body weight EBW. From these equations,...

Critical Review: Essential fatty acids on shrimp feeding Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Lima, Rodrigo Barbosa; Figueiredo-Lima, Denise Fontana.
Four types of poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are essential for all shrimp species, linoleic (LOA, 18:2n-6), alfa-linolenic (ALA, 18:3n-3), eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6n-3) acids. Moreover, the arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6), even when present, seems to be, in crustaceans, not so important or yet dispensable. It is relevant knowing that cholesterol as much as PUFA are not well absorbed when not followed by a substantial amount of lecithin, reaching 5% of the ration. The sum of PUFA reaches around 3% of the diet, even varying according to the species, stage and ration type. For Penaeus monodon, a complex mathematic model was formulated in order to describe the relationships between the requirements of the cited PUFA....

Définition d'un modèle d'élevage larvaire intensif pour la daurade Sparus auratus ArchiMer
Ounais-guschemann, Nadia.
This study defines rearing parameters for mass products of 30-day old post larvae. Continuous lighting (600 lux) optimizes the predatory activity and suppresses the feeding rhythm. For 4-5 mm larvae (15 days), food ingestion slows down if the prey concentration in the tank is below 5 rotifers/ml, while there is no such threshold for 6-7 mm larvae (22 days). The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis , between 100 and 200 mu m, is an adequate initial prey, it can be replaced by Artemia salina for 7-8 mm larvae (30 days). It is observed that free amino acids and essential fatty acids contents have a prominent role in larvae growth; docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3) content could be determined. Finally, the development of the swim bladder is facilitated by the renewal...

Digestible lysine for broiler chickens with lower genetic potential grown on free-range system Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Nascimento,Eduardo Souza do; Lima,Cristina Amorim Ribeiro de; Brasil,Ronner Joaquim Mendonça; Machado,Noédson de Jesus Beltrão; Sousa,Felipe Dilelis de Resende; Corrêa,Gerusa da Silva Salles.
ABSTRACT Determining the actual lysine requirement is crucial as it is an essential amino acid and plays animportant role in the metabolism of broilers. In addition, it is the second limiting amino acid for broilers fed with rations formulated basedon corn and soybean meal. The aim of this study was to determine the digestible lysine requirement for male broilers with lower genetic potential for growth in a semi-confined system as well as to evaluate the effects of different values of digestible lysine on performance and carcass characteristics. A total of 300 broiler chickensfrom a commercial lineage EMBRAPA 041 were used with an average initial weight of 987 g. The broilers were distributed into 20 experimental units in a completely randomized design...

Early weaning of marine fish larvae onto microdiets: Constraints and perspectives ArchiMer
Person, L.
Weaning small sized marine fish larvae at first feeding directly onto compound pellets is still difficult, while good results can be obtained when used in combination with live prey or when a prefeeding period on live prey is provided up to a size of about 2-3 mg. Microdiets are generally well ingested as their acceptability and visual detection may be improved using feeding activators and increasing good perception contrast. In theory, food may be processed to have a correct nutritional balance, selection of high digestible components is very important as larval digestive system is not fully functional during the first 2 or 3 weeks of life.

Effect of dietary essential fatty acids on egg quality and larviculture success of the greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i> F.): preliminary results OMA
Dhert, P.; Lim, L.C.; Lavens, P.; Chao, T.M.; Chou, R.; Sorgeloos, P..
In spite of its aquaculture potential, the larval rearing of greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i>) remains problematic and is not yet commercially feasible. The low and unpredictable larval survival is due to difficulties encountered in spawning the broodstock, the small size of the larvae at first feeding, and the high sensitivity of the larvae until day 45. The nutritional requirements for the broodstock as well as for the young larvae are still enigmatical. In this presentation the impact of supplementing the highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the broodstock and larval diets is illustrated.

Effects of different nutritional plans on broiler performance Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Buteri,CB; Tavernari,F de C; Lelis,GR; Rostagno,HS; Albino,LFT.
An experiment was carried out at the Department of Animal Science of the Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil, to evaluate the effects of different nutritional plans on the performance of male and female Ross broilers. A completely randomized experimental design with a 6x2 factorial arrangement (six nutritional plans x two sexes) with six replicates of 20 birds per experimental unit was applied. The nutritional plans adopted for males and females included 3, 5, or 28 feeds, and the other 3 plans included 28 feeds containing 92.5, 100, and 107.5% of digestible lysine requirements established according to a mathematical model developed exclusively for Ross broilers. The results showed that the tested 28-feed feeding programs are equivalent, and allow similar...

Effects of nutritional requirement of live food organisms on growth and survival of barramundi/seabass Lates calcarifer (Bloch) larvae. ArchiMer
Rimmer, M; Reed, A.
Larvae of barramundi (Lates calcarifer ) reared intensively in some Australian hatcheries have suffered periodic high mortalities which have been ascribed to nutritional deficiencies in the live food organisms used, particularly deficiencies of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Barramundi larvae reared in an experimental system and fed on four diets, representing combinations of supplemented and unsupplemented rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis ) and supplemented and unsupplemented brine shrimp (Artemia salina ). Supplementation of rotifers and brine shrimp with a commercially available microencapsulated diet increased the levels of several polyunsaturated fatty acids in the food organisms.

Energy-protein management by some warmwater finfishes. ArchiMer
Luguet, P; Moreau, Y.
If warmwater finfish protein requirements as level in diet is low, absolute intake per day is similar to those of coldwater species. But relation of this requirement with specific growth rate differs for strictly warmwater fishes as Tilapias. Analysis of partition between protein and non-protein energy retention shows that these species with Clarias make a better use of non-protein energy provided and consequently improve their protein retention. Better carbohydrate digestibility and metabolism are propounded as part of the explanation.

Food Security Assessment: Why Countries Are at Risk AgEcon
Shapouri, Shahla; Rosen, Stacey L..
Food insecurity in many low-income, developing countries is projected to intensify unless steps are taken to reverse the performance trend of key contributing factors: agricultural productivity, foreign exchange earnings, and population growth. For the poorest countries, an increase in agricultural productivity is the key to improving food security. In these countries, imports play a small role in the domestic food supply because of limited foreign exchange availability. This study evaluates availability and distribution of food and analyzes their trends through 2008 by projecting food gaps to maintain per capita consumption, meet nutritional needs, and fulfill requirements stemming from unequal food distribution.
