En ocho campañas oceanográficas realizadas entre los años 2000 y 2006 en el Mar Patagónico se obtuvieron datos superficiales de temperatura y salinidad, presiones parciales de CO2 (pCO2) en el mar y la atmósfera, fluorescencia (utilizada como indicador de biomasa fitoplanctónica), clorofila-a (Cl-a) y vientos, entre otros. La magnitud y dirección del flujo de CO2 se encuentran gobernadas por la diferencia entre las pCO2 de la superficie del mar y del aire (?pCO2), la solubilidad del gas y la velocidad del viento. World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) hydrographic sections and a sea-surface climatology are combined with a ocean general circulation model through a 4D-variational method to analyze the meridional overturning of the Indian Ocean. The regional model is run with realistic surface forcings over year 1995 for which most of WOCE Indian Ocean sections were made. The assimilation controls the initial temperature and salinity fields, surface forcings and open-boundary velocities, temperature and salinity. When no observations are assimilated, the model shows that the deep (below 1000 m) meridional overturning is weak compared to observation-based estimates. The use of satellite data in oceanographic and fishery studies in the SW Atlantic is reviewed. First, terms commonly used in the remote sensing literature are defined. The main satellite sensors used in oceanographic applications are described, and the principles of the remote estimation of two important variables, sea surface temperature(SST)and ocean color, are discussed. The use of remotely sensed data in oceanographic studies of the SW Atlantic is reviewed. Most studies are based on satellite SST fields and describe circulation in the open, particularly near the confluence of the Brazil and Malvinas currents.
