Abstract: The objective of this work was to characterize the chemical composition of olive (Olea europaea) oils produced in Southern of Brazil and correlate it with oxidative stability. Olive oils from the Arbequina, Coratina, Frantoio and Koroneiki cultivars were evaluated. A completely randomized experimental design was used, in a uniform arrangement, with three replicates. Acidity value, peroxide index, specific absorption, tocopherol content, phenolic compound content, carotenoid content, chlorophyll content, fatty acid profile, and oxidative stability were determined. The oils from the Coratina and Frantoio cultivars were classified as extra virgin-oils. The olive oil from the Coratina cultivar showed the highest levels of pigments, followed by the... |

Olive is one of the strategic products in Iran, and due to the significant cultivation area of this product, oil companies should be equipped with suitable processing equipment. Unfortunately, despite the high capacity of olive in Iran, oil companies are equipped with imported machines. In this study, the construction and evaluation of the Three-counter device of Iran has been developed. The machine has three oil, water and olive pulp outputs. In order to evaluate the machine, the amount of moisture content and fat extracted from the machine was checked at 2500 and 3500 rpm and 30 and 45% water content. Also, four different samples Manzallina, Fishemi, Kalamata and Oily were used in this experiment. The main components of the machine include an electric... |

Olive is the most extensively cultivated fruit crop in the world counting 9,2 million hectares of area harvested in 2009: 8,3 million are in the Mediterranean countries. This paper explain why the development of organic olive cultivation (5% of the total olive cultivation) can increase the sustainability of the Mediterranean. Regarding the ecological aspects, organic farming has benefits on landscape, biodiversity soil, water and air. Regarding economic sustainability organic olive oil production can be viable if the correct marketing channel is found. Regarding social sustainability, the olive oil consumption have a positive impact on health related to Mediterranean diet effects. |

Environmental and health problems caused by conventional agriculture lead many farmers to organic agriculture, a system that has been rapidly developed worldwide. However, the adoption of organic farming is not an easy decision and it carries with it several barriers. Different interrelated factors are usually at play, rather than one decisive single motive, concerning financial, environmental, health issues and personal beliefs and values. This study aims to indentify the factors that encourage olive growers to adopt organic practices and the reasons that discourage them to continue. Moreover, it aims to answer the question whether the farmers would continue to grow in organic way, even if the compensatory payments will be reduced? The research is... |

ABSTRACT: Olive is one of the strategic products of Guilan province, northern Iran. Hence, it is very important to determine the optimal production pattern of olive, given the resources scarcity and the assessment of physical and Comparative Advantage (CA). In this study, three physical advantage indices for olive production in Guilan province during 2008-2016 were investigated. Also, the CA, protection and competitiveness indicators of olive production at Guilan province for 2016-17 cultivation years were calculated using the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM). Results showed that Guilan province had scale advantage in olive production. The highest degree of olive plantation concentration was on 2008 with scale advantage index of 2.49. Also, results of... |

Organic farming can be seen as a whole innovation approach, but we can also find some single improved practices which can be diseminanted to other farmers in other regions. In this paper several innovations used in the production chain of olive trees in Spain have been identified in an inquiry made to 200 organic olive oil producers/processors. Some of this innovations were selected and discussed in detail regarding it´s adoption at the expert workshop organised by the Biolmed Project in the framework of the First Spanish Organic Olive oil production Symposium in Córdoba (Spain). The results of this discussions and the reference compilation about the selected innovations are presented here with a shortly description, adventages/disaventages, experiences and... |

The aim of this research was to evaluate three types of commonly used hand-held olive harvesters in small olive farms (pulsed motion double head olive harvester, hook type hand-held olive harvester and pneumatic comb olive harvester) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The specific objectives were to (a) determine the values of some olive plant parameters including physical-mechanical properties of fruit-stem system, natural frequency of the olive fruit-stem system and suitable shaking stroke), (b) establish and determine the values of the evaluation criteria which included machine productivity, fruit removal percentage, fruit damage, specific consumed energy and olive harvesting cost, (c) determine the quality characteristic for each criterion, (d) assign the... |

The aim of the thesis was to prepare high quality compost in two different piles from a basis of bovine animal manure charged with olive wastes or viticulture residues, in accordance with the Italian law on the fertilizers (Law n.748/1984 - art. 1c). All the raw materials have been selected from a group of organic farms in Apulia region. The plant residues have been crushed and the bovine animal manure has been prepared before preparing the mixture. Two piles of about 30 tons have been prepared with different composition. The first heap had the following composition: 60 % of bovine animal manure and 40% olive wastes, the second one 70 % of manure and 30% vineyard wastes. In order to produce quality compost chemical and physical analyses have been carried... |

H. Escobar, N. Lara, Y. Zapata, C. Urbina, M. Rodriguez, and L. Figueroa. 2013. Saline-boron stress in northern Chile olive accessions: water relations, B and Cl contents and impact on plant growth. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(3): 597-607. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of saline-boron stress on the vegetative growth, dry leaf weight, water potential (Ψw), relative water content, and leaf and root B and Cl- contents in 8 accessions of olive. Rooted one-year-old plants were cultivated for 132 days with 50% shading in 5-L pots containing sand substrate and watered with Jensen's nutrient solution. After eight days of uniform ferti-irrigation, the plants were exposed to saline-boron stress, which was administered in three successive... |

The aim of this study was to examine on-farm the influence of organic farming systems on soil fertility, in order to recommend agrotechnical practices that will contribute to increase soil fertility, thus the yield and quality of cultivated plants. The survey was conducted at 7 representative farms in the system of control and certification in Vojvodina, northern Serbia, and within them, 55 production fields with different history of farming practices. Optimal to high soil fertility found in average in all investigated sites indicates that there are necessary natural preconditions for successful organic farming. The results showed high variability in soil fertility, both, between organic farming systems and between different sites. Significant differences... |

The purpose of this paper is the evaluation of the investment decision under uncertainty and irreversibility allowing for long run inefficiency. The analysis has been applied to a 158 Spanish olive farms using FADN data set. A real option approach has been used to analyse the decision to invest under uncertainty and irreversibility, and a dynamic stochastic frontier model has been developed to estimate the long run technical efficiency and it persistence. The results show that the technical inefficiency persistence parameter is fairly low to unity, which means that small technical inefficiency is transmitted to the next time period. The olive groves investment is irreversible and characterized by uncertainty on price and discount rate. An increase of... |
