The ability of the aqueous extract of tronchuda cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. costata DC) external leaves to act as a scavenger of DPPH- and reactive oxygen species (superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical and hypochlorous acid) was investigated. A phytochemical study was also undertaken, and thirteen phenolic compounds and five organic acids were identified and quantified. Tronchuda cabbage extracts exhibited antioxidant capacity in a concentration-dependent manner in all assays, although some pro-oxidant effect was also noticed. The samples with higher phenolic and organic acid contents displayed the major antioxidant potentials. |

BACKGROUND: A study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of agronomic practices, harvesting time and leaf age on the organic acid composition and biomass production of Brassica oleracea L. var. costata DC (tronchuda cabbage). Samples were cultivated under eight different fertilisation regimes (two levels each of nitrogen, boron and sulfur, an organic fertiliser and no fertiliser) and collected at three different times. RESULTS: Principal component analysis of the data indicated significant differences. Three principal components with an eigenvalue higher than one accounted for 79.0% of the total variance of the data set. Samples obtained with conventional fertilisation were characterised by the highest values of fresh weight. External leaves showed higher... |

ABSTRACT: The use of nitrogen fertilizers in corn crops for silage can improve both production and, theoretically, nutritional quality, especially carbohydrate and protein fractions, thereby optimizing animal production. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of nitrogen fertilization in carbohydrate and protein fractionation on the resulting corn silage (Zea mays L.). Nitrogen fertilization was carried out in the urea form (45-00-00) in V5 stage, at the following doses: T1: 0kg N ha-1; T2: 45kg N ha-1; T3: 90kg N ha-1; and T4: 135kg N ha-1. Crops were harvested at R4 stage and submitted to ensiling in experimental PVC silos. The chemical composition of the resulting silage was evaluated after silo opening. There was no... |

The major areas of the world where viticulture is practiced enjoy temperate or cool temperature climates. When wine grapes are grown in tropical regions, edaphoclimatic factors result in distinct grape quality attributes, and production techniques also require significant adjustment. The objective of this study was to characterize the chemical compositions, in particular of phenolic compounds, of Syrah grapes grown in two location in northeast Brazil - these are also at widely different altitudes. A range of methods of phenolic extraction were used, along with classical chemical analyses including for organic acids, sugars, monomeric anthocyanins, flavonols, stilbene, condensed tannins and some of the monomeric and small oligomeric procyanidins. The... |
