APRENDIZAGEM TRANSFORMATIVA NO ESPAÇO ORGANIZACIONAL: UMA ANÁLISE DA PROPOSTA ANDRAGÓGICA DA PETROBRÁS AgEcon
Benedicto, Samuel Carvalho de; Brito, Mozar Jose de; Lima, Juvencio Braga de.
In this new century, organizational learning assumes a great relevance. It was sought by means of that research work to explore the literature and to present some theoretical reflections about learning process in adults as an attempt of better understanding the paradigms of analysis turned to the process of learning in organizations. The theoretical construct of this investigation is centered on the theory of the transformative learning of adults developed by Merizow (1991, 1997). This work has as the central goal to investigate, under the optics of the theory, the andragogical proposal of Petrobras. More specifically, it was intended in this investigation: i) redeem some aspects of history of this organization, distinguishing the elements that structured...

China’s water pricing reforms for irrigation: effectiveness and impact AgEcon
Liao, Yongsong; Gao, Zhanyi; Bao, Ziyun; Huang, Qingwen; Feng, Guangzhi; Xu, Di; Cai, Jiabin; Han, Huijing; Wu, Weifeng.
Irrigation occupies a central position in China’s crop production. However, due to low per capita water resources, much worse, unevenly distributed over regions and time and the rapid increase of water diversions to non-irrigation sectors, irrigation water shortages have become a very serious problem. Without the adoption of effective measures this problem may even threaten China’s food security. Currently, irrigation efficiency is very low in general, irrigation water prices cannot fully recover water supply costs, and irrigation facilities are aging due to the lack of funding for O&M (operation & maintenance). Since water prices are regulated by the government, and not determined by the market, water prices did not work effectively in water...

"Institutional adaptation" for integrated water resources management: An effective strategy for managing Asian river basins AgEcon
Bandaragoda, Don Jayatissa.
In many developing countries, their governments dominate the field of water resources management. Even in “participatory irrigation management” efforts, the governments play a dominant role. As these efforts are rarely based on any internally generated demand from the water users, they usually fail to create viable organizations at the local level. A similar setback can be seen in the more recent institutional reforms in Asia’s water sector, which are promoted by the donor agencies and, national and international development professionals. A survey of experiences in Asian countries shows that no country has successfully completed establishing new water sector policies and laws and river basin organizations, as prescribed. The need to improve current...

Institutional Economics and the Behaviour of Conservation Organizations: Implications for Biodiversity Conservation AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
This article draws mostly on new institutional economics to consider the likely behaviours of non-government conservation organizations and the implications of these behaviours for biodiversity conservation. It considers how institutional factors may result in behaviour of conservation NGOs diverging from their objectives, including their support for biodiversity conservation; examines aspects of rent capture and conservation alliances; specifies social factors that may restrict the diversity of species supported by NGOs for conservation; considers bounded rationality in relation to the operation of conservation NGOs; and using game theory, shows how competition between NGOs for funding can result in economic inefficiencies and narrow the diversity of...

Religious Organizations AgEcon
Levy, Gilat; Razin, Ronny.
We propose a model of religious organizations which relies on the ability of such organizations and personal utility shocks. We show how religious organizations arise endogenously and characterize their features. Specifically, we find that members of the religious organization share similar beliefs and are more likely to cooperate with one another in social interactions. We identify a "spiritual" as well as a "material" payoff for members of the religious organization. Our results explain and shed light on empirical phenomena such as the effects of secularization and economic development on religious beliefs and participation, the relation between the size of the religion and the intensity of its members’ beliefs, religious segregation and religious...
