Anatomical Characteristics of Infra-Lamina Ridge in Chinese Population 77
Li,Xiao-he; Cai,Yong-qiang; Wang,Xin; Gao,Shang; Li,Zhi-jun.
The aim of our study was to observe the occurrence rate and morphological characteristics of Infra-Lamina ridge (ILR) in Chinese population and provide a comprehensive reference for its clinical implication. Vertebrae columns of 82 sets of Chinese adult skeletons were collected. The shape of ILR was classified into three types; the occurrence of it in different sides and sexes were counted. The length, width, thickness of ILR were measured using a caliper with 0.02 mm accuracy. The ILR was usually found to occur from C7 to L5, with its frequency higher from T8 to 12, and highest at T10being up to 80.5%. There was significant statistical difference to the occurrence rate by side, sex and vertebral level. The largest values in its length and width were from...

Complete Ossification of the Superior Transverse Scapular Ligament in a Nigerian Male Adult 77
Osuagwu,F. C.; Imosemi,I. O.; Shokunbi,M. T..
Complete ossification of the superior transverse scapular ligament is generally considered to be rare and has not been previously described in a Nigerian. In the diagnosis of suprascapular nerve entrapment syndrome, variations in the anatomy of the superior transverse scapular ligament must be considered as possible etiologic factors, as illustrated by this case report

Dietary vitamin D-3 affects digestive system ontogenesis and ossification in European sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax, Linnaeus, 1758) 5
Darias, Maria J.; Mazurais, David; Koumoundouros, Giorgos; Glynatsi, Nomiki; Christodoulopoulou, Stavroula; Huelvan, Christine; Desbruyeres, Elisabeth; Le Gall, Marie-madeleine; Quazuguel, Patrick; Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino-infante, Jose L..
The influence of dietary vitamin D-3 (VD3) on survival, growth and morphogenesis during the larval development of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was evaluated until 45 days post hatching. Diets contained 4% of the standard vitamin mix (VM) recommended by the National Research Council (NRC) and incorporated 0, 19.2, 38.4, or 140 IU of VD3 per gram of diet to give VD-0, VD-1, VD-2 and VD-3 dietary treatments, respectively. The present study revealed for the first time an impact of dietary VD3 on the sea bass digestive system ontogenesis that consequently conditioned the ossification process and morphogenesis. All dietary VD3 levels were in the "adequate range" based on larval survival. Nevertheless, growth, intestinal maturation and ossification at...

Interparietal Bone Variations in Accordance with their Ossification Centres in Human Skulls 77
Khan,Aaijaz Ahmed; Ullah,Muzammil; Asari,Mohd. Asnizam; Hassan,Asma.
The upper interparietal segment of the squamous part of the occipital bone develops in membrane and the lower supraoccipital part develops in cartilage. According to the available literature, the interparietal segment is ossified from 2 to 3 pairs of ossification centres and each of these centres has 2 nuclei. Interparietal bone is formed due to failure of fusion of these centres and/or their nuclei with each other. Many variations of interparietal bone have been reported by many investigators. In the present study, out of 25 human skulls studied, six skulls had some interesting variations of interparietal bones. Four interparietal bones were found in one skull, 2 interparietal bones were observed in another skull and the remaining four skulls had a single...

Ontogeny of the cranial bones of the giant amazon river turtle Podocnemis expansa Schweigger, 1812 (Testudines, Podocnemididae) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i2.5777 3

In order to determine the normal stages of formation in the sequence of ossification of the cranium of Podocnemis expansa in its various stages of development, embryos were collected starting on the 18th day of natural incubation and were subjected to bone diaphanization and staining. In the neurocranium, the basisphenoid and basioccipital bones present ossification centers in stage 19, the supraoccipital and opisthotic in stage 20, the exoccipital in stage 21, and lastly the prooptic in stage 24. Dermatocranium: the squamosal, pterygoid and maxilla are the first elements to begin the ossification process, which occurs in stage 16. However, ossification centers begin to appear in stage 17 in most of these bone elements, i.e., the frontal, jugal,...

Placental osseous metaplasia associated with abortion in a mare: case report 45
Lima,P.A.; Eckstein,C.; Ecco,R.; Santos,R.L..
ABSTRACT The aim of this report is to describe a case of marked osseous metaplasia in the placenta associated with abortion in a mare. A 19-year-old Campolina mare with a history of multiple parturitions and absence of reproductive failure, aborted a fetus with approximately six months of gestation. There were no gross changes in the fetus and the placenta. Microscopically, there was multifocal replacement of fetal connective mesenchyme of the chorionic villi with well differentiated and partially mineralized osseous tissue (confirmed by von Kossa staining). To further characterize the collagenous component of the lesion, sections of the placenta were stained with Masson’s trichrome and Picrosirius red. Osseous tissue deposition had abundance of type I...

Study on the Time Frame for Ossification of the Medial Clavicular Epiphyseal Cartilage by X-ray in Ghanaian Students 77
Brown,A. A; Derkyi-Kwarteng,L; Amonoo-Kuofi,H. S.
The objective of this study was to determine the rate of ossification of the medial epiphysis of the clavicle and some of the different factors that may influence the rate of ossification in the Ghanaian population. The study was a retrospective study and was conducted at the University of Cape Coast hospital, Cape Coast, Ghana. Chest x-rays of 1035 first year University of Cape Coast students admitted, for the 2008/2009 academic year were used. Statistically significant differences were produced for some of the stages when sex comparisons were done using the t-test for two independent groups with a 95% confidence level. Stages 2 (p=0.001), stage 3 (p<0.001) and stage 4 (p=0-001). The age of onset of ossification of the medial clavicle appeared...

Utilisation de bactéries lactiques probiotiques pour prémunir les poissons d'élevage contre des vibrions pathogènes 5
Lamari, Faouzi.
Diseases cause major production losses in fish farms. Bacteria of the genus Vibrio are known as opportunistic pathogens, and have been associated with mass-mortality episodes. To cope with these disease outbreaks, fish farmers often resort to the use of antibiotics. However, preventive overuse has led to the emergence of resistant strains and frequent treatment failures. Probiotic lactic acid bacteria are increasingly used to improve the quality of seed production in aquaculture, while limiting antibiotic treatments. Microbial strains must fulfil several criteria to be evaluated as potential probiotics. In a first step, we selected and characterized 55 strains of lactic acid bacteria isolated from fish hatchery. The first selection criterion focused on the...
