Comparison of chemical restraint techniques in ostrich (Struthio camelus) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Ciboto,R; Cortopassi,SRG; Lopes,MAE; Carvalho,RC; Baitelo,CG.
Chemical restraint in ostriches is usually required for short-time interventions. Thus, this study established and evaluated intravenous anesthetics formulated from commonly used drugs in order to accomplish total restraint on this species and allow painful procedures to be performed. Thirty male and female ostriches weighing from 40 to 90 kg were randomly distributed into five groups. Animals in Groups I, II and III were given acepromazine (0.25 mg/kg i.m.) and those in Groups IV and V were given xylazine (1.0 mg/kg i.m.). The following drugs were administered intravenously 15 to 20 min later: Group I - propofol (4.0 mg/kg), Groups II and IV - ketamine (5.0 mg/kg) and diazepam (0.25 mg/kg), Groups III and V - tiletamine-zolazepam (3.0 mg/kg). All...

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in ostriches: could it be a public health risk? MV&Z
Doretto Júnior, Luciano.
Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is a zoonose caused by a virus of nairovirus genera, which maybe transmitted by ixodides ticks. The ostriches among other domestic and wild birds species are refractory to CCHF, but in humans the disease have shown to be lethal in 30% of the cases. The disease is disserninated in A ia, Africa and east of Europe. In the past few year in South Africa – The first country to produce and export ostriches, many cases of such disease were reported in people who work in slaughterhouses, as weU a people who deal with ostriches and/or diagnostic laboratory technician.

Extracellular matrix of ostrich articular cartilage Biocell
Tomiosso,Tatiana Carla; Gomes,Laurecir; de Campos Vidal,Benedicto; Pimentel,Edson Rosa.
The composition and organization of the extracellular matrix of ostrich articular cartilage was investigated, using samples from the proximal and distal surfaces of the tarsometatarsus. For morphological analysis, sections were stained with toluidine blue and analyzed by polarized light microscopy. For biochemical analysis, extracellular matrix components were extracted with 4 M guanidinium chloride, fractionated on DEAE-Sephacel and analyzed by SDS-PAGE. Glycosaminoglycans were analyzed by electrophoresis in agarose gels. Structural analysis showed that the fibrils were arranged in different directions, especially on the distal surface. The protein and glycosaminoglycan contents of this region were higher than in the other regions. SDS-PAGE showed the...

How Do Ratite Meats Compare with Beef?: Implications for the Ratite Industry AgEcon
Taylor, Gary; Andrews, Linda; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Schupp, Alvin R.; Prinyawiwatkul, Witoon.
Emu and ostrich meats were compared with beef to identify and quantify their sensory attributes. A sensory panel was used to compare U.S. Department of Agriculture Choice top sirloin beef with emu and ostrich meat, both ground and intact forms. Comparisons of sensory quality and acceptability were made after zero, two, four and six months of frozen storage. Differences in flavor, juiciness and texture were detected between ratite meats and beef (the control). The differences were more pronounced for intact cuts than ground meat, with ratite meat usually being rated inferior to beef. Some differences in sensory acceptability across the sic-month storage period were revealed. Implications for marketing the ratite meats are made based upon the study.

Influences of dietary crude protein and stocking density on growth performance and body measurements of ostrich chicks Anais da ABC (AABC)
MAHROSE,KHALID M.; EL-HACK,MOHAMED E. ABD; AMER,SHYMAA A..
Abstract: Thirty-six African Black ostrich chicks were used to investigate the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) levels (180, 210 and 240 g/kg), stocking density (4.5 and 3 m2/bird) and their interactions. A factorial arrangement was used to examine the impact of treatments on growth performance and body measurements of ostrich chicks during 2 to 10 weeks of the age. Results indicated that factors studied did not change growth performance traits. The highest value of protein efficiency ratio was observed in ostrich chicks fed diet contained 240 g/kg diet. Birds fed diet contained 240 g CP /kg diet and kept at stocking density of 3 m2 per bird had numerically the highest protein efficiency ratio. Shank girth and tibiotarsus length decreased with...

Since 2000, Macrorhabdus ornithogaster "megabacteriosis" has been diagnosed in the avian diseases laboratory in a diversity of avian species and varied spectrum of disease. The disease in some species (chickens, turkeys, guinea fowls) was clinically characterized by emaciation, prostration, loss of appetite, cachexia and death, with a typically chronic course. A more acute disease was observed in finches (canary-Serinus and zebra-Taeniopygia) and budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). The large rod shaped organism, visible from 100 times magnification, with and without staining, could be detected in sick and also in reasonably normal individuals of some species, such as chickens, turkeys, quails and pigeons. In rheas (Rhea americana), ostriches (Struthio...

Freitas Neto,OC de; Carrasco,AOT; Raso,TF; Sousa,RLM; Berchieri Júnior,A; Pinto,AA.
Ratite farming of has expanded worldwide. Due to the intensive farming methods used by ratite producers, preventive medicine practices should be established. In this context, the surveillance and control of some avian pathogens are essential for the success of the ratite industry; however, little is known on the health status of ratites in Brazil. Therefore, the prevalence of antibodies against Newcastle Disease virus, Chlamydophila psittaci, Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma synoviae, and Salmonella Pullorum were evaluated in 100 serum samples collected from commercial ostriches and in 80 serum samples from commercial rheas reared in Brazil. All sampled animals were clinically healthy. The results showed that all ostriches and rheas were serologically...
