Adult carbohydrate feeding affects reproduction of Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) Neotropical Entomology
Jordão,Alexandre L; Nakano,Octávio; Janeiro,Vanderly.
Reproduction of most insects depend on nutrients accumulated during the larval stage, but many lepidopteran species will also depend on nutrients obtained at the adult stage. Feeding at the adult stage allows the intake of carbohydrate and amino acid rich solutions, which may have an effect on the species reproduction and population growth. The objectives of the current study were to characterize the effects of sugar consumption by adults of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), on its reproduction. To initially test the food intake by adults, a 10% honey solution or water (control), both containing a liquid dye were offered to adult insects 24h after emergence, and the presence of the dye was observed by analysis of their digestive...

Atratividade de diferentes iscas e sua relação com as fases de desenvolvimento ovariano em calliphoridae e sarcophagidae (insecta, diptera) Zoologia
d'Almeida,José Mario; Lima,Silvana Ferreira.
Attrativeness of differents baits (fish, faeces and banana) upon ovarian development fases of Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae was evaluated. The insects were captured in Distrito Federal (urban area) and Rio de Janeiro city (beach, zoological garden, urban area and Tijuca forest). The most frequent species captured were: Calliphoridae - Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) 78,9% and Chtysomya puloria (Wiedemann, 1818) 5,4% - and Sarcophagidae - Sarcophagula Wulp, 1887 2,3% and Peckya chrysostoma (Wiedemann. 1830) 2,2%. Fish was more attractive to females of Calliphoridae flies in intense ovarian vitelogenesis, although banana atracted more flies with mature eggs. Faeces and fish were more atractive for Sarcophagidae in the beggining of vitelogenesis.

Food availability and larval density affect ovarian development in Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) Anais da SEB
Castelo Branco,Marina; Gatehouse,Alexander G..
The effect of Diamondback Moth (Plutella xylostella L.) population density and plant age on the rate of ovarian development was investigated. In tests carried out in Petri dishes, the density of larvae/leaf disk affected the rate of ovarian development. A high proportion of moths from larvae reared on leak disks from two or four-month-old spring cabbage at a density of seven or 14 larvae/leaf disk were mature at emergence. But moths reared at the same type of plant at a density of 28 larvae/leaf disk were largely immature at emergence. When the larvae were reared at a density of 30 larvae/plant on two or four-month-old spring cabbage plants, a high proportion of females were mature at emergence. Crowding has an important effect on the rate of ovarian...

Identification of the stages of ovarian maturation of the Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi Marini, 1933 (Teleostei: Merlucciidae): advantages and disadvantages of the use of the macroscopic and microscopic scales Neotropical Ichthyology
Honj,Renato M.; Vaz-dos-Santos,André M.; Rossi-Wongtschowsk,Carmen Lúcia D. B..
The Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi is a demersal-pelagic species on which few studies have been undertaken, despite its importance for the fisheries of the South-Southeastern Brazilian region, . The species is the most important commercial fishery resource in Uruguay and Argentina, where several studies have permitted the proper monitoring of the species. The ovarian maturation of the Argentine hake is analysed in this study. A scale of maturation is presented in the light of the oocyte development and the use of macro and microscopic scales of ovarian maturation are compared. It was detected that the oocyte types and derived structures present in the ovaries are similar to those already described both for the species and for teleosts in general; group...

Preechaphol,Rachanimuk; Klinbunga,Sirawut; Khamnamtongand,Bavornlak; Menasveta,Piamsak.
Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) libraries between cDNA in stages I (previtellogenic) and III (cortical rod) ovaries of the giant tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) were established. In all, 452 ESTs were unidirectionally sequenced. Sequence assembly generated 28 contigs and 201 singletons, 109 of which (48.0%) corresponding to known sequences previously deposited in GenBank. Several reproduction-related transcripts were identified. The full-length cDNA of anaphase promoting complex subunit 11 (PmAPC11; 600 bp with an ORF of 255 bp corresponding to a polypeptide of 84 amino acids) and selenoprotein M precursor (PmSePM; 904 bp with an ORF of 396 bp corresponding to a polypeptide of 131 amino acids) were characterized and reported for the first time...

Laboratory environment effects on the reproduction and mortality of adult screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Neotropical Entomology
Berkebile,Dennis R.; Sagel,Agustin; Skoda,Steven R.; Foster,John E..
The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel, is mass reared for screwworm eradication initiatives that use the sterile insect technique. New methods for rearing have helped to reduce the cost of the eradication program. We examined the effect and interaction of three temperatures (24.5, 29.5 and 34.5ºC), two diets (2% spray-dried blood plus 0.05% vitamins and corn syrup carrageenan) and three population densities (300, 400, and 500 flies/cage) on egg production, egg hatch, number of observable fertilized eggs, mortality (male and female) and ovarian development. The three population densities did not affect any of the parameters monitored. Using the protein diet increased egg production at all temperatures. Diet did not affect egg hatch or...

L'induction hormonale de la ponte à l'aide de la LH-RH chez l' ombrine, Sciaenops ocellatus. Mise en évidence des conditions optimales pour la production d'oeufs et de larves de qualité ArchiMer
Gardes, Lionel.
20 and 50 µg.kg·1 doses of [D Trp6] LH-RHa analogue proved to be effective in inducing and synchronising spawns in red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, in the French West Indies tropical conditions. The study of oocyte development through steady ovarian biopsies allowed to carry out injections at different stages. The influence of female ovarian development state at stimulation time on further development is shown. Phase C of germinal vesicle migration stage was identified as an optimum for successful stimulations. An interesting potential of successive stimulations leading to good quality spawns is established and the factors of success identified. The present work shows the  nterest of combined use of multivariate analyses and one way analyse of variance for...

Molecular cloning, characterization and expression analysis of a novel PDRG1 gene from black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Zhao,Chao; Dai,Wenting; Qiu,Lihua.
Abstract P53 And DNA Damage-Regulated Gene 1 (PDRG1) is a novel gene which plays an important role in chaperone-mediated protein folding. In the present study, the full-length complementary DNA (cDNA) sequence of the PDRG1 gene from Penaeus monodon (PmPDRG1) was cloned by the rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) method. The cDNA of PmPDRG1 spans 1,613 bp, interrupted by only one short intron, and encodes a protein of 136 amino acids with calculated molecular weight of 15.49 kDa. The temporal expression profile of PmPDRG1 in different tissues and in different developmental stages of the ovary was investigated by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). An RNA interference (RNAi) experiment was performed to study the relationship between P. monodon p53...

Neves,P.R.; Natali,M.R.M.; Ribeiro,R.P.; Vargas,L.; Maehana,K.R.; Marengoni,N.G..
This study was carried out to morphologically characterize and classify the stages of gonad development in different Nile tilapia strains (Oreochromis niloticus). Eighty-four and ninety-two ovaries from Bouaké and Chitralada strains, respectively, were evaluated at different ovarian developmental phases: initial (104 days of culture), intermediate (152 days of culture), and the final (279 days of culture). The ovaries were microscopically evaluated and submitted to histological processing and hematoxylin-eosin staining to determine their characteristics and be classified. No morphological differences in ovaries between strains were observed during the initial phase (stage A - immature). During the intermediate growing phase, higher gonad development was...

TETSUKA, Masafumi; ASADA, Masatsugu; MOGOE, Toshihiro; FUKUI, Yutaka; ISHIKAWA, Hajime; OHSUMI, Seiji; 手塚, 雅文; 福井, 豊.
This study describes the morphological and morphometrical changes associated with prepubertal ovarian development in the Antarctic minke whale (Balaenoptera bonaerensis). Ovaries were harvested from 94 immature minke whales caught in the Antarctic Ocean during the summer feeding season (December-March). Notable differences in ovarian size and morphology were found among animals. Up to 10 folds difference in ovarian weight was found among prepubertal whales of similar body size. During the prepubertal period, ovaries grew slowly and approximately doubled their weight. The morphologies of right and left ovaries were almost identical while the growth of the ovary appears to occur preferentially on the right side. The most striking morphological feature was...
