A multitracer approach to assess the spatial contamination pattern of hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the French Mediterranean ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Bouchoucha, Marc; Morat, Fabien; Miralles, Francoise; Chavanon, Fabienne; Loizeau, Veronique; Cossa, Daniel.
Chemical contamination levels and stable isotope ratios provide integrated information about contaminant exposure, trophic position and also biological and environmental influences on marine organisms. By combining these approaches with otolith shape analyses, the aim of the present study was to document the spatial variability of Hg and PCB contamination of the European hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the French Mediterranean, hypothesizing that local contaminant sources, environmental conditions and biological specificities lead to site-specific contamination patterns. High Hg concentrations discriminated Corsica (average: 1.36 ± 0.80 μg g− 1 dm) from the Gulf of Lions (average values < 0.5 μg g− 1 dm), where Rhône River input caused high PCB burdens....

A steady-state model of PCB accumulation in dab food web ArchiMer
Loizeau, Veronique; Menesguen, Alain.
A five-compartment steady-state food web model is proposed for the benthic food web leading to the dab. Three exposure pathways are considered in the description of accumulation by benthic animals: ingestion of particulate contaminants associated with either sediment or phytoplankton, and respiratory uptake of free dissolved contaminant in overlaying water. Application of the model to a simple food web in the Bay of Seine (Eastern Channel) indicates that : a) feeding is the principal route of contamination, especially for PCB which have more than four chlorine atoms in the molecule ; b) excretion and growth rates, phytoplankton lipid fraction and organic carbon content of sediment are the parameters which mostly determine the chemical bioaccumulation in...

Abarnou, Alain.
This activity report entitled (“Chemical contamination of the marine environment: from measurement to risk assessment”) summarizes the main stages my career at Ifremer from November 1975 to june 2013. The first chapter deals with the seawater chlorination and chlorinated waters released into the sea, the identification and the conditions of the formation of various by-product of these processes. The second chapter concerns PCBs, their nature, their chemical analysis in environmental matrices. PCBs are considered as the best examples of persistant and bioaccumulable compounds and therefore, in all this report they are flagship contaminants to which other groups of studied substances are compared. The third chapter refers to studies performed within marine...

Abarnou, Alain; Simon, S.
This report is a synthesis of data concerning PCB concentrations in water, sediments and organisms (Bivalvia, Malacostraca, Pisces). Water analysis shows that Seine River is the primordial factor affecting PCB dispersion in the bay. Sediment contamination is higher near estuary along Calvados coast. PCB levels in Mytilidae and in Pectinidae set the problem of polluant origin, dispersion and effects on estuarine organisms.

Impact of anaerobic and aerobic processes on PolyChloroBiphenyl removal in contamined sewage sludge Inra
Patureau, D.; Trably, E..
Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of six priority PCBs was investigated in continuous stirred tank reactors fed with naturally contaminated sewage sludge. Anaerobic and aerobic abiotic losses were higher for the lightly chlorinated PCBs but remained for all PCBs below 20%. Under strict methanogenic conditions, PCB removals were about 40% whatever PCB molecular weight or their degree of chlorination. However, considering abiotic losses, the heaviest PCBs were more efficiently anaerobically biodegraded probably because of higher dechlorination rates. The aerating sludge process enhanced removal of the lightest chlorinated PCBs from 40% up to 100%, while removal rates of the heaviest PCBs remained around 40%. Although the mesophilic aerobic process...

Investigation of the behavioural toxicity of an oral chronic administration of cow milk contaminated with PCBs in rats Inra
Streit, G.; Condé, M.; Rychen, G.; Feidt, C.; Schroeder, H..
Among the persistent organic pollutants, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are of risk for the human health because of their ability to accumulate in food and their highly toxic properties, especially for the brain. Recent findings demonstrate that these contaminants can be found in significant quantities in the milk of lactating women and ruminants, suggesting a greater danger for milk consumers like newborns and infants. Thus, the objective of the present study was to investigate the neurobehavioural toxicity of a chronic administration of PCB-contaminated cow milk in adult rats. Two groups of Wistar male rats (n = 10) were used. The "treated" group was daily administered by gavage with 0.5 ml/100g b.w. of PCB-contaminated milk for 90 days, which...

Abarnou, Alain.
PCB contamination and i ts relationship wi th suspended particulate matter (SPM) have been studied in water from the Seine estuary and the baie de Seine, in July 1985 and February 1986. PCB chromatograms are very similar and characterize a chronic contamination. PCB concentrations vary from 2 ng/l in the marine zone up to 210 ng/l in the estuary. SPM and PCB concentrations are weIl correlated. Highest PCB concentrations are measured in February due to higher SPM inputs mainly made of finer particles.

Organic micropollutants (PAHs, PCBs, pesticides) in seaweeds of the lagoon of Venice ArchiMer
Pavoni, B; Caliceti, M; Sperni, L; Sfriso, A.
Samples of seven genera of seaweeds (Ulva, Gracilaria, Porphyra, Grateloupia, Undaria, Fucus and Cystoseira), which can be used as environmental biomonitors and in several applications like human alimentation, animal feeding and cosmetics, were collected in four sampling sites in the Lagoon of Venice in spring and autumn 1999 with the aim of determining the contamination due to organic micropollutants (polychlorinated biphenyls. PCBs; chlorinated pesticides; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs). On an average, most of the considered species were contaminated especially by PAHs (up to 56 ng g(-1) dry wt. (dw)) whereas concentrations of PCBs and pesticides in macroalgal tissues were significantly correlated and did not exceed 5 ng g-1 dw. Among the...

Rice fields regulate organochlorine pesticides and PCBs in lagoons of the Nature Reserve of Camargue Inra
Roche, H.; Vollaire, Y.; Martin, E.; Rouer, C.; Coulet, E.; Grillas, P.; BANAS, D..
In order to assess pollutant transfer in Camargue ponds from bordering agrosystems, a biomonitoring assay was conducted in irrigation and drainage channels of rice fields in the Rhone Delta (France). A filter-feeding bivalve, the Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, was used as bioindicator and caged in upstream and downstream channels of an area of conventional rice fields. After 6 weeks incubation, many lipophilic biocides were identified in Corbicula tissues, including pesticides used in rice plantations (pretilachlor, oxadiazon), pesticides presumed in use in the Rhone basin [diuron and its metabolite 3,4 dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA)] and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) banned for several decades. In addition, PCBs were highly bioaccumulated in Corbicula....

Abarnou, Alain.
The concept of biological indicator relies upon the assumption that the contamination measured in biological tissues reflects that of the aquatic environment. This study aims to update the knowledge on contamination levels of various chemical contaminants in a few exploited fish species from various areas along the French coastline. The objective of the work is to evaluate the possibility of differentiating the various coastal zones according to the contamination levels measured in fish living there. Several groups of contaminants were followed: PCBs (marker PCBs and dioxin-like PCBs), dioxins (PCCDs and PCDFs), PBDEs, PFCs and total mercury). These contaminants were mainly measured in four fish species: the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), the mackerel...

Variability of PCB burden in 5 fish and sharks species of the French Mediterranean continental slope ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Fabri, Marie-claire; Miralles, Francoise Marco; Dufour, Jean-louis; Elleboode, Romain; Sevin, Karine; Mahe, Kelig; Bouchoucha, Marc.
Despite being generally located far from contamination sources, deep marine ecosystems are impacted by chemicals like PCB. The PCB contamination in five fish and shark species collected in the continental slope of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea) was measured, with a special focus on intra- and interspecific variability and on the driving factors. Significant differences occurred between species. Higher values were measured in Scyliorhinus canicula, Galeus melastomus and Helicolenus dactylopterus and lower values in Phycis blennoides and Lepidorhombus boscii. These differences might be explained by specific abilities to accumulate and eliminate contaminant, mostly through cytochrome P450 pathway. Interindividual variation was also high and no...
