Short-rotation coppice of hybrid poplar is a promising renewable feedstock for biofuel production. Breeding for high biomass in short-rotation coppice has started only recently. Two hybrid poplar families were grown at two sites in Europe and phenotyped for a variety of biomass-related traits (1) to examine the extent of phenotypic and genetic variation in biomass production, ramification, resprouting, and phenology, (2) to search for genomic regions involved in productivity, and (3) to determine the effect of the environment on the expression of these traits. The performance of both families differed within and among sites. A pronounced heterosis was observed in most cases. Moderate to high heritability values were found. PtAAP11, a high affinity amino acid transporter specifically expressed in differentiating xylem cells of poplar Inra

Amino acids are the currency of nitrogen exchange between source and sink tissues in plants and constitute a major source of the components used for cellular growth and differentiation. The characterization of a new amino acid transporter belonging to the amino acid permease (AAP) family, AAP11, expressed in the perennial species Populus trichocarpa is reported here. PtAAP11 expression analysis was performed by semi-quantitative RT-PCR and GUS activity after poplar transformation. PtAAP11 function was studied in detail by heterologous expression in yeast. The poplar genome contains 14 putative AAPs which is quite similar to other species analysed except Arabidopsis. PtAAP11 was mostly expressed in differentiating xylem cells in different organs....

Methionine oxidation leads to the formation of S- and R-diastereomers of methionine sulfoxide (MetSO), which are reduced back to methionine by methionine sulfoxide reductases (MSRs) A and B, respectively.MSRBs are classified in two groups depending on the conservation of one or two redox-active Cys: 2-Cys MSRBs possess a catalytic Cys reducing MetSO and a resolving Cys allowing regeneration by thioredoxins (Trxs). La formation du bois est un processus de développement complexe, impliquant cinqétapes majeures : (1) la division des cellules à partir d’un méristème secondaire, appelé le cambium; (2) l’élongation des cellules ; (3) le dépôt d’une paroi secondaire épaisse ; (4) la mort programmée des cellules ; et (5) leur imprégnation par des composés phénoliques conduisant à la formation du bois de coeur. Grâce au développement des techniques de génomique et aux travaux menés sur la caractérisation d’arbres transgéniques, certains mécanismes moléculaires impliqués dans la formation du bois commencent à être mieux connus. Dans cette revue, deux aspects importants pour la qualité du bois seront approfondis : la lignification et le contrôle de l’angle des microfibrilles...
