Aloe vera extract as a promising treatment for the quality maintenance of minimally-processed table grapes 116

The effect of an edible film obtained from a commercial Aloe vera extract, on the quality maintenance of minimally processed grapes belonging to three different cultivars (Sugar One, Victoria and Black Magic) was evaluated by enzymatic (PPO, PME, β-GAL), physicochemical (pH, acidity, °Brix), and sensorial methods. All the analyzed parameters were measured in extracts obtained from minimally processed grapes packaged in ordinary atmosphere and stored at 4 °C for 15 days. Samples dipped into Aloe vera showed significant differences (p≤0.05) compared to untreated ones. The U.S. beef industry has many reasons for optimism about the potential for increasing beef and beef variety meat exports to China. China'’s recent accession to the World Trade Organization lowers tariff rates on imported beef muscle meats and variety meats, low per capita consumption among Chinese consumers means there is good potential for increased consumption, and increasing incomes will allow consumers to purchase more beef. In addition, the Chinese market is highly complementary to the U.S. domestic market and offers potential for additional exports of beef cuts and variety meats that are underutilized in the United States. Observations from a recent trip to China offer insight into the current and potential market for U.S. beef.

Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate carotenoid retention in the kernels of minimally processed normal and vitamin A precursor (proVA)-biofortified green corn ears that were packaged in polystyrene trays covered with commercial film or in multilayered polynylon packaging material and were stored. Abstract Fresh cheese stands out for its tradition and widespread consumption in Brazil. However, there is a lack of information on motivation towards the consumption of available fresh cheeses in the Brazilian market. Focus group sessions were used to explore consumers’ attitude and opinion about fresh cheese. Products with different characteristics were used to stimulate discussion among participants including cheese with “no added salt”, the claim “contains probiotic microorganisms” and products processed with goat milk. The effect of packaging material and evaporative cooled storage environment on quality characteristics of tomato and kinnow fruits was evaluated. The experiments were carried out using complete randomized design and significant difference (P≤0.05) was observed among storage conditions and time with the observed parameters viz. plysiological loss in weight, firmness, pH, total soluble solids, acidity, ascorbic acid and overall acceptability in both summer and winter season. Abstract In this study the effects of zein film coating along with benzoic acid on the quality of sliced pumpkin samples, which were packaged with different techniques were investigated. The samples were allocated into different groups and were treated with different processes. Following processing, the samples were stored at +4 °C for twenty days. Physicochemical and microbiological analyses were carried out on the samples once every five days during the storage period. According to color analysis, the L* value was observed to have significantly decreased in the processed and packaged samples in comparison with the control group. Abstract There is a growing concern about health and food safety when it comes to processed food. In the present study, it has been hypothesized that tomato sauces contain high amounts of metals possibly leached from packaging. Concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Sn and Sb were determined by ICP-MS in tomato sauces stored in metallic, plastic, cellulosic and glass packaging. Packaging composition was determined by XRF. This study has also determined Cr and Sn content, by GF AAS, in simulant solutions prepared to be in contact with the four types of packaging. Poly-(vinyl chloride) (PVC) requires the addition of plasticizers - additives that give flexibility and malleability for its processing into flexible film. The most used ones are: di-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). Toxic effects of DEHP have been observed by several authors. Phthalates are being replaced by alternative substances in PVC flexible products, because of their possible toxicological effects. Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine a suitable combination of the polysaccharide mesquite seed gum (MSG) and the protein Nile tilapia fish gelatin in the composite MSG/gelatin film for food packaging applications, and to evaluate the effect of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) on the film. MSG and gelatin were extracted from mesquite seeds and Nile tilapia residues, respectively, and the CNCs from mesquite pods by acid hydrolysis. The MSG:gelatin ratio with the best combination of tensile and barrier properties was used to produce the bionanocomposite films, by adding different CNC contents to the MSG/gelatin dispersion.
