A first genetic linkage map of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis : towards the identification of Bonamia resistance QTLs ArchiMer
Lallias, Delphine; Lapegue, Sylvie; Haley, Chris; Heurtebise, Serge; Boudry, Pierre; Beaumont, Andy.
The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is an endemic European oyster species, found on both Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. Its aquacultural production has dramatically decreased due to two successive diseases caused by the intracellular parasites Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae. Since 1985, Ifremer has undertaken a breeding program to produce oyster families which are tolerant to Bonamia. In this context, the next step is to identify QTLs for resistance to this parasite. A genetic map is therefore being established as a basis for QTL work. The reference family is an F2 family produced by single pair mating of two oysters from the same F1 family. The F1 family was itself produced from a bi-parental cross between a wild oyster and an individual from the...

An anatomopathological study of hepatic coccidiosis (Calyptospora sp.) in the Acará-pixuna, Aequidens plagiozonatus Kullander, 1984 from the Brazilian state of Pará Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Videira,M.; Velasco,M.; Tortelly,R.; Menezes,R.C.; São Clemente,S.C.; Matos,E..
The present study focuses on the anatomopathological alterations provoked by parasitism by Calyptospora sp. in 40 specimens of Aequidens plagiozonatus collected in Pará, Brazil. Examinations of the fresh material by compression of the hepatopancreas and histological sections showed immature forms and oocysts characteristic of the genus Calyptospora, in addition to a large quantity of melanomacrophagic centers spread throughout the organ. No significant inflammation of the hepatic tissue was observed. The melanomacrophagic centers and the compression of the hepatocytes are part of the response of the host to the parasite. This study represents the first record of parasitism by Calyptospora in A. plagiozonatus.

An overall estimation of losses caused by diseases in the Brazilian fish farms. Repositório Alice
TAVARES-DIAS, M.; MARTINS, M. L..
Parasitic and infectious diseases are common in finfish, but are difficult to accurately estimate the economic impacts on the production in a country with large dimensions like Brazil. The aim of this study was to estimate the costs caused by economic losses of finfish due to mortality by diseases in Brazil. A model for estimating the costs related to parasitic and bacterial diseases in farmed fish and an estimative of these economic impacts are presented. We used official data of production and mortality of finfish for rough estimation of economic losses. The losses herein presented are related to direct and indirect economic costs for freshwater farmed fish, which were estimated in US$ 84 million per year. Finally, it was possible to establish by the...

Approche in vitro et in vivo des interactions hémocytes/parasite Bonamia ostreae, chez l'huître plate Ostrea edulis ArchiMer
Denoix, Michael.

The estuary of the Odet, which can be defined as a ria, is an integral part of SAGE, taken on by SIVALODET. This space was hardly studied and it seemed important to perform a full assessment of knowledge and issues relating to this ria's fragile and unstable ecosystem. This assessment must be performed according to several points of focus; it must first of all strive to retrace the history of the fisheries in the Odet, then make it possible to identify as clearly as possible the marine habitats that make up this site. With that, it must then bring to light the potential resources of the estuary and finally resituate the Odet in relation to the other Breton estuaries.

Biology and parasitism of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, 1879, on Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller, 1879) and Heliocoverpa zea (Boddie, 1850) eggs. Repositório Alice
SA, L. A. N. de; PARRA, J.R.P..
Biological aspects of Thichogramma pretiosum Riley, 1879, reared on factitious host Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller, 1879), were studied in incubators at 25 (+- 1.C); 60 (+- 10%) RH and 14 hour photophase with the aim of obtaining basic information for the biological control of Helicoverpa zea (Boddie, 1850) in corn crop. The average duration of the life cycle (egg-adult) of T. pretiosum was similar when reared on natural and factitious host. Sexual ratio of the parasitoid was not affected by the natural or factitious host. The longevity of T. pretiosum was higher when reared on factitious host relating to natural host. The parasitism capacity of the two strains of T. pretiosum on A. kuehniella eggs was similar, with a high concentration of parasitism in the...

Bachere, Evelyne; Durand, Jean-louis; Tige, Gilbert.
The parasite, Bonamia ostreae, was diagnosed in several South Brittany flat oyster's samples, from gills tissues's prints, stained in May-Grunwald-Giemsa and from corresponding digestive glands sections. The comparaison of results shows quantitative differences relating to the infested oyster's rate, and qualitative differences relating to the early stages of infestation. Gill's print technic seems more intersting for the only Bonamia ostreae diagnosis.

Braga nasuta (Cymothoidae): an ectoparasite of the Giant Amazonian fish Arapaima gigas (Osteoglossidae) fingerlings cultured in the Amazon region in Northern Brazil Biological Sciences
Jesus, Elson Cardoso de; Cardoso, Lucas; Ferreira, Tamiris Henrique; Martins, Mauricio Laterça; Rodrigues, Marília Danyelle Nunes.
Isopods Cymothoidae are organisms that parasitize several fish species, both marine and freshwater, provoking important physiological alterations and secondary infections. The genus Braga was proposed to harbor three species of parasitic isopods in freshwater fish from South America: B. brasiliensis, B. cichlae and B. nasuta. Posteriorly, other four species were included: B. patagonica, B. amapaensis, B. fluviatilis and B. bachmanni. Regarding the geographical distribution of the genus, there are registers in Brazil, Argentina, Suriname and Paraguay. In this study, 3,625 fingerlings of pirarucu Arapaima gigas were examined from a commercial fish farm in the Amazon region, Pará State, to observe and identify possible parasites. A total of eleven...
