Collaborative Agreements: A ‘how to’ guide AgEcon
Henson-Apollonio, Victoria.
Partnerships can be an extremely effective way to harness additional skills and resources and minimize costs. Collaboration allows scientists (and other partners) to access a broad range of expertise and fosters a multi-disciplinary approach, both of which are often required when tackling complex research issues. However, it may be difficult to make the most of collaborative agreements, since different partners may have different objectives and approaches and misunderstandings can occur.

Creating restoration landscapes: partnerships in large-scale conservation in the UK Ecology and Society
Adams, William M.; Department of Geography, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK; wa12@cam.ac.uk; Hodge, Ian D.; Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK; idh3@cam.ac.uk; Macgregor, Nicholas A.; Natural England, Nobel House, London, UK; Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE), School of Anthropology and Conservation, University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent, UK; nicholas.macgregor@naturalengland.org.uk; Sandbrook, Lindsey C.; Department of Geography, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK; lindsey.sandbrook@gmail.com.
It is increasingly recognized that ecological restoration demands conservation action beyond the borders of existing protected areas. This requires the coordination of land uses and management over a larger area, usually with a range of partners, which presents novel institutional challenges for conservation planners. Interviews were undertaken with managers of a purposive sample of large-scale conservation areas in the UK. Interviews were open-ended and analyzed using standard qualitative methods. Results show a wide variety of organizations are involved in large-scale conservation projects, and that partnerships take time to create and demand resilience in the face of different organizational practices, staff turnover, and short-term funding. LEADER PROGRAM A DÉL-MÁTRÁBAN AgEcon
Wolcz, Andrea; Bardosne-Kocsis, Eva.

Ownership and Control in the Entrepreneurial Firm: An International History of Private Limited Companies AgEcon
Guinnane, Timothy W.; Harris, Ron; Lamoreaux, Naomi R.; Rosenthal, Jean-Laurent.
We use the history of private limited liability companies (PLLCs) to challenge two pervasive assumptions in the literature: (1) Anglo-American legal institutions were better for economic development than continental Europe’s civil-law institutions; and (2) the corporation was the superior form of business organization. Data on the number and types of firms organized in France, Germany, the UK, and the US show that that the PLLC became the form of choice for small- and medium-size enterprises wherever and whenever it was introduced. The PLLC’s key advantage was its flexible internal governance rules that allowed its users to limit the threat of untimely dissolution inherent in partnerships without taking on the full danger of minority oppression that the...

Partnering for bioregionalism in England: a case study of the Westcountry Rivers Trust Ecology and Society
Cook, Hadrian; School of Natural and Built Environments, Kingston University, London; h.cook@kingston.ac.uk; Benson, David; Environment and Sustainability Institute, Department of Politics, University of Exeter, Cornwall; d.i.benson@exeter.ac.uk; Couldrick, Laurence; Westcountry Rivers Trust, Stoke Climsland, Callington, Cornwall; Laurence@wrt.org.uk.
The adoption of bioregionalism by institutions that are instrumental in river basin management has significant potential to resolve complex water resource management problems. The Westcountry Rivers Trust (WRT) in England provides an example of how localized bioregional institutionalization of adaptive comanagement, consensus decision making, local participation, indigenous technical and social knowledge, and “win-win” outcomes can potentially lead to resilient partnership working. Our analysis of the WRT’s effectiveness in confronting nonpoint source water pollution, previously impervious to centralized agency responses, provides scope for lesson-drawing on institutional design, public engagement, and effective operation,...

The Cooperative Research Centre for Beef Genetic Technologies and the “Accelerated Adoption through Sustainable Beef Profit Partnerships” Project AgEcon
Griffith, Garry R.; Parnell, Peter F.; Clark, Richard A.; Timms, Janice; Hyland, Paul W.; Mulholland, Cynthia; Alford, Andrew R..
Technology adoption in the Australian beef industry has been low and slow compared to that in the intensive livestock and cropping industries. Adoption needs to be higher and faster to fully capture the benefits from new beef genetic and other technologies. The principles of rapid improvement and innovation, and accelerated adoption, provide an innovative solution to this problem. In the Beef CRC, Sustainable Beef Profit Partnership (BPP) teams meet regularly to assess their current performance, set targets for future productivity increases, and use a profitability framework to assess the potential impact of new technology in their beef businesses. Their thinking, decisions and actions are based on the principles and process of Continuous Improvement and...

The Role of Fire in Changing Land Use and Livelihoods in Riau-Sumatra Ecology and Society
Suyanto, S.; World Agroforestry (ICRAF); suyanto@cgiar.org; Applegate, Grahame; ; grahame_applegate@urscorp.com; Permana, Rizki Pandu; ; R_pandupermana@yahoo.com; Khususiyah, Noviana; ; Nkhususiyah@cgiar.org; Kurniawan, Iwan; ; i.kurniawan@cgiar.org.
Results from remote sensing analysis, participatory mapping, socio-economic interviews, and hotspot information that were analyzed in a geographic information system (GIS) show how fire has changed the landscape through its use in land preparation for oil palm and timber plantations and in the development of transmigration settlements. These timber and oil palm plantations have greatly altered the livelihood options of the communities, and have created conflict between communities and companies over land-use allocation and tenure. In many cases, conflict over tenure has been the motive for forest and land fires during the annual dry season. The study suggests that, where partnerships between communities and companies were established to develop oil palm...

Toward a New Definition of Community Partnership: A Three-Dimensional Approach AgEcon
Shemer, Orna; Schmid, Hillel.
We propose a new definition of partnership, which emphasizes the role and meaning of power in creating partnership. Following a case study of change processes within a kibbutz community undergoing lifestyle changes, The proposed definition focuses on three dimensions of partnership: (a) the overt dimension, in which partnership is manifested through daily community life such as organizational structure, rules and norms; (b) the covert dimension, which focuses on symbolic rites of partnership and "non-events"; (c) the latent dimension, which expresses internalized partnership and influences participants' consciousness through socialization and world views.
