To describe spatial heterogeneity of crop properties, non-destructive methods can be helpful in capturing whole field data sets. This paper shows examples of different sensor methods that have been evaluated to measure biomass and legume content in legume-grass mixtures. Biomass has been estimated using vegetation indices (NDVI, SR, EVI and REIP) calculated from spectral reflectance measurements in greenhouse experiments. The index REIP has been used to identify species composition as well. Furthermore, biomass values can be derived from ultra sonic measurements of sward heights. To quantify legume contents in short term leys, which is important for forage quality and nitrogen flows, image analysis tools have been used in different experi-ments with good... |

The objective of this study was to compare the agronomic performance of different forage legume species submitted to different management systems, i.e. grazing, silage-cut and simulated grazing to find alternatives for white clover. The experiment was established in 2003 and 2004 as binary swards with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) as the companion grass with three replicates in two different sites on the experimental station “Lindhof” of the University of Kiel. Legume species were arranged within each management system as completely randomised blocks. Results of agro-nomic performance of the first production years in 2004 and 2005 (DM-yield, botanical composition, N-yield, N-content) are presented for white clover swards (Trifolium repens L.), red... |

Introduction Agricultural cropping systems generally have a limited use of water and nutrients from the soil below 1m depth. However, several plant species have much deeper root systems, and if included in cropping systems, these would allow for exploitation of otherwise unused resources from deep soil layers. In a unique facility consisting of 12, 4m high ‘root towers’ we examined the root development and root activity in different soil layers of different biannual/perennial plant species. Methods Four plant species lucerne (Medicago sativa), rosinweed (Silphium integrifolium), intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium), and dyers voad (Isatis tinctoria) were grown in soil in large rhizotrons (root towers) (4m×1.2m×0.6 m). Root growth was... |

One way of reducing the emissions of fossil fuel-derived carbon dioxide (CO2) is to replace fossil fuels with biofuels produced from agricultural biomasses or residuals. However, cultivation of soils results in emission of other greenhouse gasses (GHGs), especially nitrous oxide (N2O). Previous studies showed that field emissions of N2O may contribute significantly to total GHG emissions during biofuel production. Furthermore, N2O may counterbalance a considerable part of the global warming reduction, which is achieved by fossil fuel displacement. In the present study, we related measured field emissions of N2O to the reduction in fossil fuel-derived CO2, which was obtained when agricultural biomasses were used for biofuel production. The analysis included... |

In view of climate change predictions and the general desirability of increasing the amount of home grown protein, a case exists for the investigation of lupins and lupin/cereal bicrop combinations as wholecrop forage on organic farms. A replicated randomised block trial is described which took place at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, in 2005. This involved spring sown blue, white and yellow lupins, millet, wheat and triticale and lupin/cereal bi-crops. Data for dry matter yields for wholecrop silage, crude protein, MAD fi bre content and estimated ME, are presented for a single harvest. It is concluded that white lupins and white lupin bi-crops with spring wheat or triticale offer the best prospects for a viable wholecrop forage crop in an... |

Rotklee bzw.

In comparison to harvesting, grazing is less cost intensive. For economical reasons an extended duration of grazing period is recommended. Grazing during winter can cause pasture damages, which is of minor relevance for older grass clover grown on arable land, which will be ploughed in the following spring. Against this background yield and forage quality of 3 different legume species, i.e. white clover, red clover and alfalfa, grown in binary mixtures with two grass species, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue, respectively, were examined before grazing the third growth in autumn or winter. Nitrate leaching losses during winter and yield of the following spring wheat were recorded. Yield and forage quality of the total sward was not significantly... |
