Analyzing supply response of fruit tree products in Tunisia: The case of peaches AgEcon
Laajimi, Abderraouf; Guesmi, Anis; Mahfoudhi, A.; Dhehibi, Boubaker.
In Tunisia, peaches have a significant place in the fruit tree sector. Planted areas have been expanding ever since the eighties as a result of irrigation water extension and the use of better yielding varieties. These factors resulted in high production levels and fruit exports thereof. However, important seasonal and annual variation of fruit supplies continues to characterize prices at both wholesale and consumption levels. To study the response of peach production an econometric model was developed. Modelling was carried out in two stages. First area variation was explained through new plantings and removals and second yield variation was analyzed. The methodological approach followed takes into account the characteristics and...

Cultivar Diversity: A Neglected Risk Management Strategy AgEcon
Tadesse, Dawit; Blank, Steven C..
Risk reduction through diversification across cultivars is evaluated. A case study of peach growers in California shows that cultivar diversity reduces both yield and revenue variability. As a result, the probability of falling below minimum income requirements set using a safety-first model is reduced using this strategy.

Discriminant analysis in the selection of groups of peach cultivars. Repositório Alice
MELO, G. W. B. de; ROZANE, D. E.; BRUNETTO, G.; LATTUADA, D. S..
Brazil ranks 14th in the world in terms of peach and nectarine production. Of the nearly 211,000 tons total output, the state of Rio Grande do Sul produces 60% of the national production, while southern Brazil accounts for 75%. This indicates that adequate parameters are required to manage the nutritional status of all fruit trees, of which the peach tree is an important component, as well as the performance of long-term experiments under field conditions in several, but often restricted, numbers of cultivars.

EVALUATION OF CROP INSURANCE PREMIUM RATES FOR GEORGIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA PEACHES AgEcon
Miller, Stephen E.; Kahl, Kandice H.; Rathwell, P. James.
We estimate actuarially fair premium rates for yield insurance for Georgia and South Carolina peaches for comparison to the premium rates established by the Risk Management Agency (RMA) for the 1999 crop. The RMA premium rates varied from county to county, but were identical for all growers in a given county. The estimated premium rates decrease with the grower's expected yield. The RMA rate structure encouraged adverse selection, as premium rates were too low for growers with low expected yields (especially at low coverage levels) and were too high for growers with high expected yields (especially at high coverage levels).

Morphological and kinetic parameters of the uptake of nitrogen forms in clonal peach rootstocks. Repositório Alice
PAULA, B. V. de; MARQUES, A. C. R.; RODRIGUES, L. A. T.; SOUZA, R. O. S. de; KULMANN, M. S. de S.; KAMINSKI, J.; CERETTA, C. A.; MELO, G. W. B. de; MAYER, N. A.; ANTUNES, L. E.; RICACHENEVSKY, F. K.; NICOLOSO, F. T.; BRUNETTO, G..
Peach (Prunus persica L.) rootstock cultivars are typically selected for scion compatibility, ease of propagation, vigor, development, flowering season, yield, low need for cold temperatures, resistance to diseases, effects on the physical-chemical characteristics of the fruit, plant longevity and adaptation to adverse edaphoclimatic conditions. However, kinetic parameters related to nutrient uptake efficiency are usually not considered, such as those of nitrate (NO3 −) and ammonium (NH4 +). N is the nutrient that most impacts growth and yield. The objective of this study was to show the importance of the kinetic parameters of NO3 − and NH4 + uptake as additional criteria for selecting peach rootstocks. The experiment was conducted in a...

PREMIUM RATES FOR YIELD GUARANTEE AND INCOME PROTECTION CROP INSURANCE FOR GEORGIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA PEACHES AgEcon
Miller, Stephen E.; Kahl, Kandice H.; Rathwell, P. James.
We estimate actuarially sound premium rates for individual yield guarantee and income protection crop insurance products for Georgia and South Carolina peaches. In most cases, the premium rate for an income protection product equals or exceeds the premium rate for an individual yield guarantee product for a given coverage level and average farm yield. Although the premium rates for the two products differ in a statistical sense, they do not appear to differ in an economic sense except at high coverage levels for growers with very high yields.

REVENUE INSURANCE FOR GEORGIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA PEACHES AgEcon
Miller, Stephen E.; Kahl, Kandice H.; Rathwell, P. James.
We estimate actuarially fair premium rates for yield and revenue insurance for Georgia and South Carolina peaches. The premium rates for both products decrease at a decreasing rate as the mean farm-level yield increases. In general, the premium rate for revenue insurance exceeds the premium rate for yield insurance for a given coverage level and expected yield. Although the revenue and yield insurance rates differ in a statistical sense, they do not appear to differ in an economic sense except at high coverage levels for growers with very high yields.

The Overall Significance of Attributes and Attributes’ Levels on Fresh Fruit Choice AgEcon
Groot, Etienne; Albisu, Luis Miguel.
Fresh fruits are always recommended as ingredients in healthiest diets. However, there is a tendency for consumers to move their consumption towards transformed fruits, which are integrated in many food products. Quite commonly fresh fruits are difficult to handle and store but they also do not have regular quality when they reach consumers. There are many other elements besides the physical characteristics, which are very important for consumers, and they can be promoted through marketing actions. It is very important to understand why consumers make elections of fresh fruits in order to increase their consumption. The aim of this study is to understand how consumers make their purchasing choices based on the most important peaches’ attributes and levels....
