This study evaluated the structure and the volume of interphase nuclei from root meristems of the genotypes of napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) and hybrids resultant of such breeding. In napier grass, nuclei were areticulate. Both pearl millet and the triploid hybrid had semi-reticulate nuclei; also, the hybrid presented a small proportion (6%) of areticulate nuclei. Pearl millet had the highest averages of nuclear dimensions, such as volume, diameter and radius, followed by the interspecific hybrid and napier grass. There was no intraspecific variation for the type of nuclear structure, which indicates this feature is important for cytotaxonomic studies involving the genus Pennisetum. Results demonstrated that... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of cover crops and timing of pre-emergence herbicide applications on soybean yield under no-tillage system. The experiment consisted of four cover crops (Panicum maximum, Urochloa ruziziensis, U. brizantha, and pearl millet) and fallow, in addition to four herbicide timings (30, 20, 10, and 0 days before soybean sowing), under no-tillage system (NTS), and of two control treatments under conventional tillage system (CTS). The experimental design was a completely randomized block, in a split-plot arrangement, with three replicates. Soybean under fallow, P. maximum, U. ruziziensis, U. brizantha, and pearl millet in the NTS and soybean under U. brizantha in the CTS did not differ significantly regarding... |

Cytogenetic studies were carried out on five accesses of interspecific hybrids of Pennisetum purpureum and Pennisetum glaucum and their parentals, which are part of the Forage Germplasm Bank of the "Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Gado de Leite" of EMBRAPA, Brazil. The mitotic cytogenetic analysis, performed using stain by Schiff reactive, confirmed the chromosome number of 2n = 14, 28 and 21 for the accesses of P. glaucum, P. purpureum and their hybrids, respectively. For each access, descriptions of the chromosome complement and idiograms are presented which allowed to establish the karyotypic relationships between the hybrids and their parentals. Based on the total chromosomal length data it was possible to establish the karyotype classification of the... |

Abstract Millets are having superior nutritional qualities and health benefits; hence they can be used for supplementation of pasta. Pasta was prepared using composite flour (CF) of durum wheat semolina (96%) and carrot pomace (4%) supplemented with finger millet flour (FMF, 0-20g), pearl millet flour (PMF, 0-30g) and carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC, 2-4g). Second order polynomial described the effect of FMF, PMF and CMC on lightness, firmness, gruel loss and overall acceptability of extruded pasta products. Results indicate that an increasing proportion of finger and pearl millet flour had signed (p≤0.05) negative effect on lightness, firmness, gruel loss and overall acceptability. However, CMC addition showed significant (p≤0. 05) positive effect on... |

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of replacing corn with pearl millet in commercial layer diets, formulated according to the minimal requirements for total and digestible amino acids. Two hundred and forty Lohmann LSL laying hens with 25 weeks of age were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design according to a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement with 3 replicates of 8 birds. Feed was formulated on two amino acid basis (total or digestible) according to Rostagno et al. (2000) and there were five pearl millet inclusion levels (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Performance and egg quality were evaluated during five periods of 21 days.At the end of each period, feed intake, egg production, egg weight and feed conversion were evaluated.... |

The experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance and body development of beef heifers reared from 15 to 18 months of age on Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum), Alexandergrass pasture (Urochloa plantaginea) or native pasture invaded by Annoni-2 grass (Eragrostis plana Nees). The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement, with three treatments and two replications. The grazing method was continuous with variable stocking rate in order to maintain the sward height at 40 cm. Masses of leaf, stem and dead material, crude protein and neutral detergent fiber were similar between Pearl millet and Alexandergrass. Average daily gain, stocking rate, live weight gain per hectare, body weight, body condition... |
